A thermophile in the shade: light-directed nest relocation in the Costa Rican ant Ectatomma ruidum

In tropical climates, nest movements by mature ant colonies are probably widespread but the phenomenon of nest relocation is poorly described (McGlynn 2007, McGlynn et al. 2004, Smallwood 1982a). For species that nest in soil, the costs and risks associated with excavating and establishing new nests are consequential, and it is assumed that relocation occurs when the costs are offset by a more advantageous nest location (Avargues-Weber & Monnin 2009, Banschbach & Herbers 1999). Nest movements may occur to areas with greater availability of food resources or to a more favourable microclimate. Here we provide the first report of nest relocation in one of the most widespread and well described ant species in the Neotropics, Ectatomma ruidum (Roger), and we perform a manipulative experiment to test whether food availability or light environment influence nest movement.

The genus Convolvulus has more than 200 species that are encountered in temperate to tropical climates all around the world. Convolvulus cneorum L., also known as silverbush, is a perennial shrub native to southern Europe (Sicily and Croatia) with dense, silver foliage and masses of large, circular, white flowers. During July of 2009, a widespread blight was observed on approximately 10% of 12,000 4-month-old potted silverbush plants. The plants were obtained from cuttings and produced by a commercial nursery in eastern Sicily, Italy. Symptomatic plants initially had sunken, tan lesions at the ground level that developed into typical southern blight. Circular and crescent-shaped patches were observed on the masses of weeds on the surface of the containers where silverbush were grown. At the soil line, white mycelia and small (1 to 2 mm in diameter), brown, spherical sclerotia with internally differentiated rind, cortex, and medulla characteristic of Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. were observed. Crown and stem lesions were surface disinfested (1% NaOCl) for 1 min, rinsed in sterile water, and placed on potato dextrose agar. Isolation consistently yielded colonies of Sclerotium rolfsii (teleomorph Athelia rolfsii (Curzi) Tu & Kimbrough) with typical sclerotia produced within 6 to 7 days (2). Pathogenicity tests were performed on 20 plants by placing 10 sclerotia obtained from 10-days-old cultures in the soil below the crown portion on each of 5-month-old healthy cuttings of silverbush. The same number of plants served as noninoculated controls. All plants were maintained in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1°C and enclosed for 7 days in polyethylene bags. Plants were then moved to a greenhouse where temperatures ranged from 24 to 28°C. Symptoms of southern blight developed after 7 to 20 days on all inoculated plants. Control plants remained symptomless. S. rolfsii was reisolated from symptomatic plants. S. rolfsii was reported for the first time in Sicily in 2004 in an ornamental nursery (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report in the world of S. rolfsii on silverbush and it is the first outbreak of southern blight on Convolvulus species. The high susceptibility of silverbush to the pathogen could be a limiting factor for the cultivation in nursery of this indigenous wildflower plant. References: (1) G. Polizzi et al. AbstractSocial insect colonies exhibit a variety of life history strategies, from the annual, semelparous colonies of temperate bees and wasps to the long-lived colonies of many ants and honeybees. Species introduced to novel habitats may exhibit plasticity in life history strategies as a result of the introduction, but the factors governing these changes often remain obscure. Vespula pensylvanica, a yellowjacket wasp, exhibits such plasticity in colony longevity. Multi-year (perennial) colonies are relatively common in introduced populations in Hawaii, while source populations in the western United States are typically on an annual cycle. Here, we use experiments and observational data to examine how diet, disease, nest thermal environment, and nest location influence colony longevity in a population with both annual and perennial colonies. Counter to our predictions, experimental feeding and warming did not increase colony survival in the winter in the introduced range. However, Moku Virus load and wasp colony density predicted colony survival in one year, suggesting a potential role for disease in modulating colony phenology. We also found that local V. pensylvanica colony density was positively correlated with Moku Virus loads, and that Arsenophonus sp. bacterial loads in V. pensylvanica colonies were positively associated with proximity to feral honeybee (Apis mellifera) hives, suggesting potential transmission routes for these poorly understood symbionts. The factors influencing colony longevity in this population are likely multiple and interactive. More important than food availability, we propose winter precipitation as a critical factor that may explain temporal and spatial variation in colony longevity in these invasive wasps.

The discovery of numerousPyramica ohioensisandP. rostratacolonies living in acorns, as well as the efficient recovery of colonies from artificial nests placed in suitable habitats, opens a new stage in the study of North American dacetine ants. Here we present detailed information, based on 42 nest collections, on the colony structure of these two species.P. ohioensiscolonies are smaller than those ofP. rostrata. Both species are polygynous, but nests ofP. ohioensiscontain fewer dealate queens than those ofP. rostrata. This is the first report of multiple collections ofPyramicacolonies nesting in fallen acorns, and of the use of artificial nesting cavities to sample for dacetines in the soil and leaf litter. We describe an artificial cavity nest design that may prove useful in future investigations.

Ant colonies change nest location in response to physical disturbance, climate fluctuation, and resource availability. During the emigration process, worker recruitment is vital to ensuring that individual colony members are moved to the new nest site. Recruitment methods used during emigration differ between ant species. In a laboratory study, we investigated the recruitment behaviors of the invasive Asian needle ant, Brachyponera (=Pachycondyla) chinensis (Emery), during nest emigration. Subsets of P. chinensis worker ants were subjected to physical nest disturbance, and the recruitment methods and associated behaviors were recorded. Before recruitment to the new nest location began, B. chinensis ants organized into three distinctive groups: queen-tending, brood-tending, and scouting. Once the new nest site was identified, scout ants began physically transporting nestmates into the new harborage. Transport rates increased with time in the first 30 minutes and did not change during the 30to 55 minute interval when brood was transported. However, adult transport rate increased again after brood transport was completed and decreased after 90 minutes. These studies are the first to identify the recruitment methods, division of labor, and social organization behavior of B. chinensis during nest emigration.

Introduction: Clostridium botulinum is known to cause descending paralysis in infants throughout the world. Methodology: The subject of this study was a three-month-old Costa Rican boy who was hospitalized because of poor suction and feeding, hypotonia, and constipation. Clinical history and physical examination findings suggested infant botulism. Samples were sent to the Winnipeg Public Health Laboratory, where Clostridium botulinum toxin A was identified by PCR and culture from the stools, making this the first report of infant botulism in Central America. Conclusions: Although infant botulism is a known disease, the limitations in identifying it in Central America contributes to the misdiagnosis and under-reporting of this disease.
