AbstractCompeting proposals on the syllabification of initial consonants in Moroccan Arabic are evaluated using a combination of experimental and modelling techniques. The proposed model interprets an input syllable structure as a set of articulatory landmarks coordinated in time. This enables the simulation of temporal patterns associated with the input syllable structure under different noise conditions. Patterns of stability between landmarks simulated by the model are matched to patterns in data collected with Electromagnetic Articulometry experiments. The results implicate a heterosyllabic parse of initial clusters so that strings like /sbu/ comprise two syllables, [s.bu]. Beyond this specific result for Moroccan Arabic, the model reveals the range of validity of certain stability-based indexes of syllable structure and generates predictions that allow evaluation of a syllabic parse even when stability-based heuristics break down. Overall, the paper provides support for the broad hypothesis that syllable structure is reflected in patterns of temporal stability and contributes analytical tools to evaluate competing theories on the basis of these patterns.

The use of friction pendulum devices has recently attracted the attention of both academic and professional engineers for the protection of structures in seismic areas. Although the effectiveness of these has been shown by the experimental testing carried out worldwide, many aspects still need to be investigated for further improvement and optimisation. A thermo-mechanical model of a double friction pendulum device (based on the most recent modelling techniques adopted in multibody dynamics) is presented in this paper. The proposed model is based on the observation that sliding may not take place as ideally as is indicated in the literature. On the contrary, the fulfilment of geometrical compatibility between the constitutive bodies (during an earthquake) suggests a very peculiar dynamic behaviour composed of a continuous alternation of sticking and slipping phases. The thermo-mechanical model of a double friction pendulum device (based on the most recent modelling techniques adopted in multibody dynamics) is presented. The process of fine-tuning of the selected modelling strategy (available to date) is also described.

This study presents a novel model for evaluating design satisfaction (DS) for primary school construction projects. The proposed model consists of three aspects including Teaching space design, Campus planning and design, and Eco-awareness oriented and 19 DS evaluation items (DSEIs). Eco-awareness oriented was the most important aspect and must be exerted during the design phase of school construction based on the DS evaluation results of 10 schools. Additionally, special attention should be paid to design of natural lighting in classroom (DSEI5), utilization of color in classroom (DSEI7) and construction scheduling and planning (DSEI11) as they are important DSEIs that received low satisfaction scores. The results of this study contribute to the efforts to improve DS and the quality of primary school construction. The framework, methodology, and analytical tools used in the study can be applied to build similar models for other aspects of construction and service performance for school construction projects.

The summer ichthyoplankton characteristics in the Laibin section of the Xijiang River were analyzed based on a survey during summer 2017. The ontogenetic structure and temporal patterns of ichthyoplankton and the correlation between environmental parameters and the temporal patterns were investigated. A total of 10,665 eggs and 447 larval belonging to four orders, ten families, and 28 species were collected. According to the flood regime, summer is divided into three periods (pre-flood, flood period, and post-flood). Ichthyoplankton proved to be heterogeneous between periods in summer with differences in the composition and abundance. The assemblages were distinguished by multiple analytical tools, and presented a chronological pattern of marked variability in composition of the species between the periods, and under the strong influence of flood. The assemblages were mainly represented by eggs of S. wui Fang and S. robusta in the pre-flood period, S. argentatus and S. macrops in the flood period, and H. leucisculus and S. curriculus in the post-flood period, while, the larval occurred mainly in the flood period. Understanding these temporal patterns of the upper course of the Xijiang River is useful for the recruitment of fish resources and conservation of fish community diversity.

This paper details a hydrodynamic model based on Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) developed to assess ’conventional’ 3-bladed tidal stream turbines (TSTs), adapted here to analyse an ’unconventional’ case of a ducted and open centre device. Validations against a more detailed coupled Reynolds averaged computational fluid dynamics (RANS-BEM) model shows excellent agreement, of within 2% up to the peak power condition, with associated computational times in the order of a few minutes on a single core. The paper demonstrates the application of hydrodynamic forces into a structural analysis tool, in order to assess blade stress distributions of a generic hubless turbine. Incorporation of parameters such as non-uniform inflows and blade weight forces are investigated, with their effects on stress profiles presented. Key findings include: i) the adapted BEMT model replicates the majority of turbine performance characteristics estimated through previous CFD assessments; ii) the proposed model reduces the computational effort by several orders of magnitude compared to the reference coupled CFD, making it suitable for engineering assessments iii) blade stress distribution profiles are quantified, detailing concentration zones and cyclic values for use in fatigue analyses. This work forms part of a greater project aimed to develop a suite of analytical tools to perform engineering assessments of bi-directional ducted TSTs.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool (OMSAT-3), an instrument developed to measure a broad range of mental skills (Salmela, 1992). The OMSAT-3 was administered to 335 athletes from 35 different sports. An initial first-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed that the model displayed an inadequate fit, which led to the postulation of a more robust version, the OMSAT-3*. A CFA on this latter version, which included 48 items and 12 mental skill scales grouped under three broader conceptual components—foundation, psychosomatic, and cognitive skills—indicated that the proposed model fit well the data. A second-order CFA assessing the validity of the three broader conceptual components also yielded adequate indices of fit. The OMSAT-3* significantly discriminated between competitive and elite level athletes and its scales yielded acceptable internal consistency and temporal stability. Implications for consultants, coaches, and researchers are discussed.

Previous research has found that different syllabic (particularly simplex vs. complex onset) organisations have different temporal stability signatures in articulations – this observation is based entirely on articulatory measurements. In this article, we present the results of three production experiments which show that similar correlations between onset organisation and temporal stability metrics are observable in an analysis of acoustic measurements in American English and Jazani Arabic. The results that we present show stability across speakers and test items for both language groups, and highlight the possibility of using acoustic techniques to help to investigate the organisation of onsets in other languages.

We asked whether invariant phonetic indices for syllable structure can be identified in a language where word-initial consonant clusters, regardless of their sonority profile, are claimed to be parsed heterosyllabically. Four speakers of Moroccan Arabic were recorded, using Electromagnetic Articulography. Pursuing previous work, we employed temporal diagnostics for syllable structure, consisting of static correspondences between any given phonological organisation and its presumed phonetic indices. We show that such correspondences offer only a partial understanding of the relation between syllabic organisation and continuous indices of that organisation. We analyse the failure of the diagnostics and put forth a new approach in which different phonological organisations prescribe different ways in which phonetic indices change as phonetic parameters are scaled. The main finding is that invariance is found in these patterns of change, rather than in static correspondences between phonological constructs and fixed values for their phonetic indices.

In manufacturing industries or the supply chain, very few attempts have been made in the past to measure service quality or to test the linkages between service quality with supplier's satisfaction and loyalty. Thus, to fill the existing void in the literature, an attempt has been made to conceptualise a model proposing linkages of service quality with supplier's satisfaction and loyalty in the supply chain of automotive industry. The research design for this paper includes a combination of literature review and a survey of 220 and 170 practitioners from four and two automobile manufacturing companies located in Northern India and Western India, respectively. Structural Equation Modelling Techniques (SEM) has been used to examine the relationships among the variables and to test the goodness fit of the proposed model. Set of propositions related to model was empirically tested at supplier-manufacturer dyad and with an optimum fit of model, found that the data fits the model.
