AbstractWe revisit the question of the ionization of the diffuse medium in late type galaxies, by studying NGC 891. The most important challenge for the models considered so far was the observed increase of [O iii]/Hβ, [O iii]/Hβ, and [N ii]\Hα with increasing distance to the galactic plane. We propose a scenario based on the expected population of massive OB stars and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) in this galaxy to explain this observational fact. In the framework of this scenario we construct a finely meshed grid of photoionization models. For each value of the galactic latitude z we look for the models which simultaneously fit the observed values of the [O iii]/Hβ, [O ii]/Hβ, and [N ii]\Hα ratios. For each value of z we find a range of solutions which depends on the value of the oxygen abundance. The models which fit the observations indicate a systematic decrease of the electron density with increasing z. They become dominated by the HOLMES with increasing z only when restricting to solar oxygen abundance models, which argues that the metallicity above the galactic plane should be close to solar. They also indicate that N/O increases with increasing z.

CCD imaging and BVRI photometry of 14 IRAS sources with far-IR colours similar to planetary nebulae and post-AGB stars are presented. Also results of optical and near-IR spectroscopy of 10 of these candidates are given. Based on the spectral energy distribution from 0.4 μm to 100 μm, the sample of program stars are put into two groups. The sources IRAS 08187-1905, IRAS 05238-0626 and IRAS 17086-2403 present similar flux distributions. These three sources have detached cold dust components with dust radii Rd ≈ 1000 R∗. The low infrared variability of theses sources suggests that the intense mass loss has been ceased. All three sources are at high galactic latitude (1>9°) suggesting that these are old low-mass evolved stars. In the IRAS colour-colour diagram of Likkel et al (1991) these sources fall in the region where most of the stars are evolved stars and PNe but without CO detection. This is consistent with at least one source IRAS 17086-2403, in which OH and CO molecular features are not detected. The far-IR excess, non-variability and high latitude of these objects suggest that these are post-AGB supergiants, slowly evolving towards planetary nebula phase.

AbstractRadio astrometric campaigns using VLBI have provided distances and proper motions for masers associated with young massive stars (BeSSeL survey). The ongoing BAaDE project plans to obtain astrometric information of SiO maser stars located in the inner Galaxy. These stars are associated with evolved, mass-losing stars. By overlapping optical (Gaia), infrared (2MASS, MSX and WISE) and radio (BAaDE) sources, we expect to obtain important clues on the intrinsic properties and population distribution of late-type stars. Moreover, a comparison of the Galactic parameters obtained with Gaia and VLBI can be done using radio observations on different targets: young massive stars (BeSSeL) and evolved stars (BAaDE).

AbstractWe present the results of two three-year surveys of young and nearby stars to search for wide orbit giant planets. On the one hand, we focus on early-type and massive, namely β Pictoris analogs. On the other hand, we observe late type and very low mass stars, i.e., M dwarfs. We report individual detections of new planetary mass objects. According to our deep detection performances, we derive the observed frequency of giant planets between these two classes of parent stars. We find frequency between 6 to 12% but we are not able to assess a/no correlation with the host-mass.

We present an X-ray survey of the Galactic Plane conducted by the Survey Science Centre of the XMM-Newton satellite. The survey contains more than 1300 X-ray detections at low and intermediate Galactic latitudes and covering 4 deg<sup>2</sup> well spread in Galactic longitude. From a multi-wavelength analysis, using optical spectra and helped by optical and infrared photometry we identify and classify about a fourth of the sources. The observed surface density of soft X-ray (&lt;2 keV) sources decreases with Galactic latitude and although compatible with model predictions at first glance, presents an excess of stars, likely due to giants in binary systems. In the hard band (&gt;2 keV) the surface density of sources presents an excess with respect to the expected extragalactic contribution. This excess highly concentrates towards the direction of the Galactic Centre and is compatible with previous results from Chandra observations around the Galactic Centre. The nature of these sources is still unknown.

AbstractFrom the combination of VLBI phase-referenced observations and Hipparcos satellite data, we have found evidence of a low-mass object orbiting the late-type star AB Doradus. The mass of the new object is near the hydrogen burning limit and will constitute a precise point for calibrating the low end of the main sequence. This represents the first detection of a low-mass stellar companion using the VLBI technique, which could become an important tool in future searches for planets and brown dwarfs orbiting other stars.

It is becoming increasingly clear that no (or only one or two) binaries occur among the evolved stars in globular clusters. Therefore, if binaries exist at all in these systems, they must be found on or near the main sequence. I have chosen 6 clusters to search for faint eclipsing binaries by the following criteria: (1)the apparent visual distance modulus (Harris 1976) (m-M)V ≤ 14.5 mag;(2)the Peterson and King (1975) concentration class c ≤ 1.5, so that the search can be conducted near or at the cluster center where binaries would most likely be found; and(3)the galactic latitude is sufficiently large to avoid problems of extreme contamination by field stars. The clusters thus chosen are NGC3201, 5139 (Omega Cen), 6121 (M4), 6218 (M12), 6254 (M10), and 6809 (M55). The plate material obtained on three nights with the 4-m telescope at CTIO in 1979, consists of seven to nine plates of each cluster on IIIa-F emulsion with an RG610 filter; the search is being conducted with a blink microscope.

The high-galactic-latitude cloud L1642 (l = 210.8°, b = −36.7°) is a suitable candidate to relate IR measurements with atomic and molecular data because it has a reasonable size with respect to the rather poor (IRAS) IR resolution, a moderate optical extinction and an isolated location in the direction towards the galactic anticenter. The exceptionally high galactic latitude of −36.7° implies that L1642 is some 60 pc below the galactic plane (if r ≈ 100 pc is adopted for its distance). L1642 is thus sufficiently far off the galactic plane to minimize the confusion by background gas and dust clouds.

The Sco OB2 Association is convenient for investigation as it has a high galactic latitude and is therefore remote from the confusion of the galactic plane. Its distance is accurately known and this permits fairly precise estimates to be made of the Lyman continuum photon fluxes responsible for the radio emission. It includes the ρ Ophiuci dark cloud where star formation is occurring.

Below 1 keV, analyses of X-ray background data are complicated by galactic absorption effects, which cause the received intensity to vary with galactic latitude. Bowyer et al. (1968) observed that the diffuse background did not fall off as rapidly as was expected towards the galactic plane. One plausible interpretation of their data would be to suppose that a significant flux of soft X-rays emanates from the disc itself. I wish to discuss what could be inferred about the latter component from improved observations of its latitude-dependence, and by indirect methods.

The remarkable filament system seen in radio observations in the vicinity of the galactic center includes two thin filaments which arch away from the galactic plane (E.G. Yusef-Zadem et al 1984). The brightest part of each of these thermal structures is located at GO.10+0.02 and GO.07+0.04. Morris and Yusef-Zadem (1989) reason that photoionization by OB stars is unlikely on geometrical and morphological grounds. They suggest a magnetohydrodynamic mechanism to account for the radio emission and ionization. Erickson et al. (1968) were able to explain most of their observations of the far infrared (FIR) fine structure line emission from these locations in terms of a photoionization model.
