AbstractWe use photometry in the F220W, F250W, F330W, F435W filters from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys and photometry in the F555W, F675W, and F814W filters from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to derive individual stellar reddenings and extinctions for member stars in the HD 97950 cluster in the giant H ii region NGC 3603. Within the standard deviation associated with E(λ−F555W)/E(F435W−F555W) in each filter, the cluster extinction curve at ultraviolet wavelengths tends to be greyer than the average Galactic extinction laws from Cardelli et al. (1989) and Fitzpatrick et al. (1999). It is closer to the extinction law derived by Calzetti et al. (2000) for starburst galaxies, where the 0.2175 μm bump is absent.

The Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 was used to image at high resolution the core region of the nearby, heavily obscured massive elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. We report on the discovery of 19 diffuse objects in the WFPC2 field that are likely to be globular clusters associated with Maffei 1. We present some preliminary data on the luminosities, colors, and sizes of these candidates.

AbstractThe Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) is designed to enhance the science obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope by combining the tens of thousands of visit-based source lists in the Hubble Legacy Archive (HLA) across filters and detectors into a single master catalog. The catalog contains data from the major Hubble imaging instruments: Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). It is based on cross matching and astrometry algorithms developed by Budavari & Lubow (2012). We recently released Version 2 that is three times the size of Version 1 and includes some new features. The catalog can be accessed through a variety of interfaces (see http://archive.stsci.edu/hst/hsc/). The HSC provides descriptions of astronomical objects involving multiple wavelengths and epochs. High relative positional accuracy of objects is achieved across the Hubble images, often with sub-pixel precision of a few milliarcseconds.

Resonance rings are intriguing sites of organized star formation in some galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 has been used to image several resonance rings at high resolution in order to study the star clusters in the rings. Here I summarize results on inner Lindblad resonance rings in ESO 565–11 and NGC 1326, and on an inner 4:1 resonance ring in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3081. The latter ring provides one of the strongest cases illustrating the connection between star formation and dynamics in disk galaxies.

AbstractEuropa is a prime target for astrobiology and has been prioritized as the next target for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration flagship mission. It is important, therefore, that we advance our understanding of Europa, its ocean and physical environment as much as possible. Here, we describe observations of Europa obtained during its orbital eclipse by Jupiter using the Hubble Space Telescope. We obtained Advanced Camera for Surveys Solar Blind Channel far ultraviolet low-resolution spectra that show oxygen line emission both in and out of eclipse. We also used the Wide-Field and Planetary Camera-2 and searched for broad-band optical emission from fluorescence of the surface material, arising from the very high level of incident energetic particle radiation on ices and potentially organic substances. The high-energy particle radiation at the surface of Europa is extremely intense and is responsible for the production of a tenuous oxygen atmosphere and associated FUV line emission. Approximately 50% of the oxygen emission lasts at least a few hours into the eclipse. We discuss the detection limits of the optical emission, which allow us to estimate the fraction of incident energy reradiated at optical wavelengths, through electron-excited emission, Cherenkov radiation in the ice and fluorescent processes.

The Advanced Camera for Surveys was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope in March 2002. The instrument science team will search for planets using direct imaging with the ACS coronagraph and with precise astrometric and photometric measurement of suitable stars and disks. The camera is operational and performing to expectation.
