Canola meal (CM) is a suitable protein source in poultry diets, although it contains a number of antinutritive factors including non-starch polysaccharides and phytic acid. These factors can limit inclusion rate of canola meal in poultry diets (Kocher et al., 2000). The negative correlation between NSP levels and nutritive value of the diet has been demonstrated in poultry (Choct and Annison, 1990). In addition to reducing the availability of phosphorus to birds, phytates are also associated with a number of antinutritional effects, largely because they can chelate divalent cations and reduce protein availability (Ravindran et al., 1995). Successful use of enzymes in cereal-based diets has stimulated interest in the application of enzymes to target the vegetable protein components of poultry diets as well. The current study was, therefore, conducted to investigate the effects of a multi-enzyme on performance and serum thyroid hormone concentrations of broilers fed rations in which soybean meal was replaced by CM.

Two experiments were carried out to ascertain the nutritional value of potato waste meal (PW) as a replacement for corn in practical poultry diets using 320 male and 320 female Cobb chicks fed from 1-day-old to 46 days (exp. 1) and 49 days (exp. 2) a basal cereal-based diet containing soybean and fishmeals or test diets each containing 50 g, 100 g, 150 g, 200 g and 300 g PW/kg. In both experiments, the diets were analyzed for elemental and amino acid composition, and the growth responses on the test diets were evaluated individually over a period of 28 days and 46 days or 49 days of ad libitum feeding. Although PW appeared limiting with respect to methionine and cystine, arginine and the aromatic amino acids, it was found that upon supplementation with methionine (0.5 g/kg), the test mixtures exhibited a synergistic effect compared with controls, and that this potato byproduct can be considered a good substitute ingredient for a proportion (200 g/kg) of the ground corn in a practical diet for broiler chickens. Feeding PW at a rate of up to 200 g/kg resulted in optimum biological response and monetary returns. The inclusion of up to 300 g/kg PW in the diets did not increase wetness of the litter or hardness of pellets, two factors reported earlier which could limit the use of PW in animal diets. Two studies were undertaken to evaluate the nutritive value of high fiber canola meal (HFCM) relative to regular canola meal for ruminants. In the first study, 21 growing lambs were utilized in a randomized complete block design to determine the total tract digestion coefficients of dry matter (DMD), crude protein (CPD), gross energy (GED), neutral (NDFD) and acid (ADFD) detergent fiber and the digestible energy (DE) contents of seven dehydrated alfalfa-based diets containing 0, 250, 500 and 750 g kg−1 HFCM or canola meal. In the second study, the effect of feeding HFCM as a protein supplement to dairy cows relative to canola meal and soybean meal (SBM) was examined in a triple 3 × 3 Latin square design. Results of the first study showed that HFCM had lower (P < 0.05) DMD, CPD, GED and DE contents than canola meal. The estimated DMD, CPD and GED and DE contents for HFCM were 674 and 795 g kg−1, 695 kJ MJ−1 and 13.68 MJ kg−1, respectively. The corresponding values for canola meal were 707 and 841 g kg−1, 727 kJ MJ−1 and 14.10 MJ kg−1, respectively. Results of the second study showed that protein supplement source had no effect on DM intake, milk yield, milk fat g kg−1, lactose g kg−1 and total solid g kg−1. However, cows fed HFCM- and canola meal-based diets produced milk with lower (P < 0.05) protein content than those fed the SBM-based diet. It was concluded that HFCM had lower total tract nutrient digestion coefficients and DE content compared with canola meal. Incorporation of HFCM in dairy rations up to 100 g kg−1 of the ration had no adverse effect on milk yield or milk composition compared with canola meal. Silage fermentation is progressively restricted as the extent of pre-wilting increases (O'Kiely et_al., 1988). The magnitude of the improvement in silage nutritive value in response to a lactic acid bacteria inoculant could be related to the extent of the fermentation in the untreated silage. The objective of this experiment was to determine if the response in silage nutritive value to a Lactobacillus plantarum inoculant was similar at different levels of dry matter (DM) concentration.

Sorghum grain (SG) contained more crude protein (103.5 g/kg) and ash (17.0 g/kg) but less crude fiber (17.7 g/kg) and total lipid (22.6 g/kg) than corn. The SG contained 0.37% ± 0.02 tannin, had a higher apparent metabolizable energy value than corn or wheat and contained all of the amino acids considered essential for chickens at levels in general between those of corn and wheat. Two experiments were carried out to ascertain the nutritive value of SG as a partial replacement for corn and wheat in practical poultry diets using 320 male and 320 female Cobb chicks in each. Starter (finisher) diets fed from 0–21 days (22–42 days) contained the following levels of SG: 15 (19); 30 (39); 45 (58)%. The diets were isoenergic and isonitrogenous. The inclusion of up to 45% SG in the starter diet and up to 58% in the finisher diet had no significant effect on mortality, live body weight, feed conversion or percentage of grade A carcasses. Pomegranate by-products (peel and seed) contain about 40-45 percent of the fruit’s weight. The rind of the fruit (peel),when dried, is brown outside, yellow inside, hard, dry, brittle, in irregular fragments, inodorous, and with a very astringent, somewhat bitter taste. Analysis of pomegranate peel (PP) is shown that it contains 18.8 percent of tannin, 17.1 of mucilage, 10.8 of extractive matter, 30 of lignin, a trace of resin, and 29.9 of moisture. However, little information is available on PP nutritive value for ruminants. It is poor in protein and rich in tannins. Tannins components of the peel prevents its optimal use. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of different levels of urea (U) on in vitro gas production with and without added polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVP) to ensiled pomegranate peel (EPP).
