Assessing the Measurement Invariance of the Gratitude Questionnaire–5 in Chinese and American Adolescents

Abstract Given the possibility of cultural differences in the meaning and levels of gratitude among children, we evaluated the measurement invariance of the Gratitude Questionnaire–5 (GQ–5) and differences in latent means across adolescents from two distinct cultures, China and America. Data were obtained from 1,991 Chinese and 1,685 American adolescents. Confirmatory factor analysis and multigroup confirmatory factor analysis were performed to examine the factor structure and the measurement equivalence across Chinese and American adolescents. The Cronbach’s alpha and Item-total Correlations of the GQ–5 were also evaluated. Results of confirmatory factor analyses provided support for the expected one-factor structure. Also, a series of multi-group confirmatory factor analyses supported full configural invariance, full metric invariance, and partial scalar invariance between the two groups. Furthermore, the findings suggested that the GQ–5 is suitable for conducting mean level comparisons. The subsequent comparison of latent means revealed that the Chinese adolescents reported significantly lower gratitude than American adolescents.

ABSTRACTBackground:To investigate dimensions of caregiver burden through factor analysis of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), and to examine predictors of different dimensions of burden.Methods:Confirmatory factor analyses were performed on 395 Hong Kong Chinese Alzheimer caregivers to examine whether several proposed factor structures fit the data well. Subsequently, participants were split into two roughly equal subsamples, for the purpose of identifying the most optimal factor structure through exploratory factor analysis in Sample A (n = 183) and an independent verification through confirmatory factor analysis in Sample B (n = 212). ZBI subscales representing the established factors were correlated with caregiver and care-recipient variables known to be associated with burden.Results:Confirmatory factor analyses showed that factor models reported elsewhere did not fit the data well. Subsequently, exploratory factor analysis in Sample A suggested a 4-factor structure. After dropping three items due to poor factor loadings, the 4-factor structure was found to fit the data moderately well in Sample B. The four factors tapped personal strain, captivity, self-criticism, and loss of control. However, self-criticism was basically unrelated to the other three factors and showed a rather different pattern of correlations with caregiver and care-recipient variables. Self-criticism was more common among child caregivers and those who did not live with the care-recipient and was less involved in day-to-day care, yet feeling obligated and close to the care-recipient.Conclusions:The dimensions of caregiver burden may be culturally specific. More research is needed to examine cultural considerations in measuring caregiver burden.

This study examined sources of sport confidence and their relationship to trait sport confidence with master athletes. The study employed 216 athletes from 50 to 96 years of age in track and field, tennis, and swimming, using the Sources of Sport Confidence Questionnaire (SSCQ; Vealey, Hayashi, Garner-Holman, & Giacobbi, 1998). Confirmatory factor analysis failed to replicate the proposed 9-factor structure of the SSCQ. Exploratory factor analyses revealed an 8-factor structure with similar factors to the SSCQ, but with fewer items and the elimination of the situational favorableness factor. Physical/mental preparation and mastery were the highest ranked sources among the athletes. A simultaneous multiple regression analysis indicated that physical/mental preparation and demonstration of ability were significant predictors of trait sport confidence for master athletes. Our findings suggest that the SSCQ needs more psychometric work if it is to be used with this type of population.

The aim of this work is to examine the pentafactorial validity of the AF5 Self-Concept Questionnaire in Spanish and Chilean young adults. From the responses of a total of 4,383 young adults aged 17 to 22 years (1,918 Spanish, 44%, and 2,465 Chilean, 56%) it was analyzed the reliability of the instrument, the compared validity of the 5 oblique factor model proposed by the authors versus the unifactorial and the orthogonal alternative models, and was studied the invariance of one Chilean sample. The results of confirmatory factor analyses supported the authors' pentafactorial model. The multi-group factorial invariance showed that Chilean sample of the AF5 does not change neither the Spanish factor weights, nor the variances and covariances of the factors, or the error variances of items. Finally, the internal consistency of the five scales was good in the samples of both countries.

Previous research demonstrates that there is an association between effective teaching and teachers’ positive psychological functioning at work. The current study explores the factor structure of the Teacher Subjective Wellbeing Questionnaire (TSWQ), which is a brief measure of two key dimensions of teachers’ positive psychological functioning: school connectedness and teaching efficacy. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on TSWQ responses from a sample of 1,883 teachers across eight states, with results suggesting that the TSWQ is a structurally valid measure of its two purported teacher well-being constructs. Furthermore, measurement invariance analyses reveal that the factor structure of the TSWQ stays consistent across elementary, middle, and high school teachers. Taken together, findings from the current study further support the technical adequacy and, by extension, the applied use of the TSWQ in schools to screen for intervention, measure outcomes, and monitor progress.

Students’ ability to effectively allocate time toward educational tasks and reduction of maladaptive behaviors such as procrastination are important predictors of successful educational outcomes. The Academic Time Management and Procrastination Measure (ATMPM) purports to measure the extent to which students engage in such behaviors; however, the psychometric properties of the ATMPM have only been explored with exploratory techniques. In addition, the extent to which measurement invariance is supported among first-generation college students (FGCS) and non-FGCS is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to (1) examine the factor structure of the ATMPM within a college population by employing confirmatory factor analysis and to (2) investigate measurement invariance through an application of multiple group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA). Results supported a three-factor solution (planning time, monitoring time, and procrastination), and invariance analyses supported full configural, metric, and scalar invariance.

An abridgement of the Adult Behavioral Classification Project Inventory (AdBCP) was accomplished. The creation and development of the full-scale Inventory is described in Phase I. In Phase II, the participant pool was divided into half, and each half of the data set was subjected to both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with a factor control of 11 of the strongest factors in the original data set. Items identifying these factors had to have at least |.35| factor structure weights, leaving a 42-item instrument, the Brief AdBCP Inventory. Predicting from the first half to the second half by confirmatory factor analysis resulted in a fair confirmation of the factor structure. A rough norm table is offered based on the factor scores of the first half of the participants' records.

The Japanese version of the Eating Disorder Inventory was completed by 204 female university students. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the 9 factors reported by Shimura, et al. (2003). Further, maximum likelihood factor analysis yielded nine factors, accounting for 48.8% of the total variance. There was also adequate fit for each of the 9 subscales. This study provided additional evidence on validity for this Japanese version.

BACKGROUND Over the last decades, significant advances have been made in the development of digital tools and applications for mental healthcare. Yet, despite growing evidence for their effectiveness, their acceptance and use in clinical practice remain low. To gain further insights in the process of eMental Health adoption and to facilitate future research on this topic, a validated and easy-to-use instrument to assess professionals' readiness to adopt eMental Health is necessary. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to develop and validate an instrument for assessing mental healthcare professionals' adoption readiness for eMental Health. METHODS Item generation was guided by literature and input from mental healthcare professionals and experts in survey development. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted on an initial set of 29 items completed by a sample of mental healthcare professionals (N = 432), after which the scale was reduced to 15 items in an iterative process. The factor structure thus obtained was subsequently tested with a confirmatory factor analysis with a second sample of mental healthcare professionals (N = 363). Internal consistency, convergent validity and predictive validity of the eMHAR Scale were assessed. RESULTS Exploratory factor analyses resulted in a three-factor solution with 15 items. The factors were analyzed and labeled as ‘perceived benefits and applicability of EMH’, ‘EMH proactive innovation’, and ‘EMH self-efficacy’. These factors were confirmed through a confirmatory factor analysis. The total scale and subscales showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.73-0.88) and acceptable convergent and predictive relations to related constructs. CONCLUSIONS The constructed eMHAR Scale showed a conceptually interpretable three-factor structure with satisfactory characteristics and relationships with relevant concepts. Its ease of use allows for a quick acquisition of data that can contribute to understanding and facilitating the process of adoption of eMental Health by clinical professionals.

The Disgust Scale has been designed to measure disgust propensity—the individual ease in experiencing disgust. The present study aimed to explore the validity, reliability, the factor structure, and the measurement invariance of the Greek version of the Disgust Scale-Revised (DS-R). A sample of 754 healthy participants completed the Greek version of the DS-R. A subset (n = 363) also completed the revised Symptom checked list and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, in order to examine the concurrent validity. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analyses in different subsets were used to examine the factor structure. Multiple indicators–multiple causes model (MIMIC) models were used to assess the measurement invariance across gender and age. Demographic influences were assessed using t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlations. Exploratory factor analysis concluded to two and three factor models, with a factor structure similar to the ones proposed in the literature. Confirmatory factor analysis and bi-factor analysis provided evidence in favor of the three-factor solution. Measurement invariance test revealed differences in six items across gender, and three items across age. The psychometric properties of the factors were satisfactory. Demographic influences on the responses were present, especially with respect to gender. The Greek version of the DS-R demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties, making it suitable for use for the Greek population.

Abstract Background and Purpose. The purpose of this article is to illustrate how confirmatory factor analysis can be used to extend and clarify a researcher's insight into a survey instrument beyond that afforded through the typical exploratory factor analytic approach. The authors use as an example a survey instrument developed to measure individual differences in professional role orientation among physical therapists, the Professional Role Orientation Inventory for Physical Therapists (PROI-PT). Sample. Five hundred three physical therapists responded to a mail survey instrument that was sent to a random sample of 2,000 American Physical Therapy Association members. Methods. An adapted version of the Professional Role Orientation Inventory, a 40-item Likert-scale instrument developed to assess professional role orientation on 4 dimensions (authority, responsibility, agency, and autonomy), was used. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to examine the factorial validity of the PROI-PT. Results. Exploratory factor analysis served as a starting point for examining the factor structure of the instrument. Confirmatory factor analysis then was used to test the hypothesized factor structure and to suggest refinements to the PROI-PT that would improve a psychometric property (internal consistency). Discussion and Conclusion. Although further refinement of the PROI-PT is needed, an instrument that yields valid and reliable measurements of individual differences in professionalism among physical therapists could further our understanding of the psychosocial aspects of physical therapist practice. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses can be used by researchers who study various psychosocial constructs in physical therapy.
