Nine europium complexes with 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid (Hpyca) and butanedioic acid (HBDA) were synthesized and characterized by elemental, IR, EDTA titration, ICP, and TG-DSC analyses. The results show that the complexes have the compositions of Eu(Pyca)(BDA)•2H2O, Eu0.7La0.3(Pyca)(BDA)•2H2O, Eu0.6La0.4(pyca)(BDA)•3H2O, Eu0.5La0.5(pyca)(BDA)•4H2O, Eu0.7Y0.3(Pyca)(BDA)•3H2O, Eu0.6Y0.4 (Pyca)(BDA)•2H2O, Eu0.5Y0.5(Pyca)(BDA)•3H2O, Eu0.7Gd0.3(Pyca)(BDA)•2H2O and Eu0.5Gd0.5(Pyca)(BDA)•2H2O. IR spectra indicate that lanthanide ions coordinate with the carboxylic oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms of Hpyca and oxygen atoms of HBDA. Luminescence spectra show that the introduction of La3+, Y3+ or Gd3+ in the complexes does not change the luminescence peak position, but remarkably increases luminescent intensity of the europium complexes. The quantum yields of the complexes doped with inert lanthanide ions (La3+, Y3+ or Gd3+) are higher than that of the undoped europium complex. Furthermore, doping the inert lanthanide ions in right proportion can increase the luminescence lifetimes of complexes. Those complexes are of strong luminescence, low cost and practical value.

Three aryl-hydrazone O,N,O tridentate ligands with a different electron-withdrawing substituent were prepared. The introduction of a flexible charged chain in the ligands guaranteed solubility in many organic solvents and in water. The increasing withdrawing aptitude of the substituents red-shifted the emission in the correspondent metallopolymers. The metallated polymers were obtained by grafting ligand-zinc (II) coordination fragments onto commercial poly-(4-vinylpyridine). Metallopolymers thin films exhibited red, green and blue emission colors defined by Commission Internationale d’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates and medium to excellent photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (PLQYs) comparable with other highly-performing active materials for Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). By grafting a suitable mix of the three different coordination pendants, an efficient single-component white emissive metallopolymer with CIE (0.30, 0.31) was prepared. Thanks to the charged moiety, the polymers resulted miscible with an ionic liquid. The addition produced homogeneous polymeric layers with unaltered PL performances, potentially employable in Light-emitting Electrochemical Cells (LECs).

Seven europium complexes of 2-pyrazinecarboxylate (pyca) doped with inert fluorescent lanthanide ions (La3+, Y3+) have been synthesized. Elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy and TG-DSC analysis showed that the complexes have the formulas of Eu(pyca)3•3H2O and EuxRE1-x(pyca)3•3H2O (RE=La, Y; x = 0.7,0.5,0.3), respectively. The lanthanide ions coordinated with carboxylic oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms of pyca. Luminescence spectra and luminescence life-times of the complexes have been measured and their quantum yields were calculated. The results showed that the existence of La3+and Y3+ions could enhance the luminescence intensity and quantum yield of the europium complexes, which may arise from the intramolecular energy transfer between the inert fluorescent lanthanide ions and Eu3+ion. Those doped complexes have the advantages of strong luminescence, low cost and practical application value.

Different sol-gel strategies based on functionalization of ZrO2:Eu microparticles with 1,10- phenanthroline (phen) and incorporation of colloidal Eu(phen)2(NO3)3 into zirconia have been used to obtain hybrid sol-gel composites with controlled optical properties. The process leads to materials with quantum yields of about 48% monitoring the 615 nm emission line at 350 nm excitation. Excitation/ luminescence spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the hybrid zirconia composites.

The present contribution is focused on the relation preparation – structure – optical properties of hybrid silica and zirconia powders containing Eu(III) complexes: [Eu(ntac)3][pphendcn] and [Eu(phen)2](NO3)3. Methods for functionalization of silica and zirconia microparticles, based on adsorption of 1,10-phenantroline and [Eu(ntac)3][pphendcn], and doping with [Eu(phen)2](NO3)3 nanoparticles  are proposed to obtain of red emitting hybrid composites with quantum efficiency 20 – 50 %. The optical properties of rare earth ions incorporated in silica and zirconia composites are used to explore the site symmetry (D2, C2v or lower) of the Eu3+ optical centers in the hybrid composites.  Quantum yields of the investigated sol-gel micropowders and quantification of their optical spectra are presented.

<div>Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets exhibit exceptionally narrow photoluminescence spectra. This occurs because samples can be synthesized in which all nanoplatelets share the same atomic-scale thickness. As this dimension sets the emission wavelength, inhomogeneous linewidth broadening due to size variation, which is always present in samples of quasi-spherical nanocrystals (quantum dots), is essentially eliminated. Nanoplatelets thus offer improved, spectrally pure emitters for various applications. Unfortunately, due to their non-equilibrium shape, nanoplatelets also suffer from low photo-, chemical, and thermal stability, which limits their use. Moreover, their poor stability hampers the development of efficient synthesis protocols for adding high-quality protective inorganic shells, which are well known to improve the performance of quantum dots. <br></div><div>Herein, we report a general synthesis approach to highly emissive and stable core/shell nanoplatelets with various shell compositions, including CdSe/ZnS, CdSe/CdS/ZnS, CdSe/CdxZn1–xS, and CdSe/ZnSe. Motivated by previous work on quantum dots, we find that slow, high-temperature growth of shells containing a compositional gradient reduces strain-induced crystal defects and minimizes the emission linewidth while maintaining good surface passivation and nanocrystal uniformity. Indeed, our best core/shell nanoplatelets (CdSe/CdxZn1–xS) show photoluminescence quantum yields of 90% with linewidths as low as 56 meV (19.5 nm at 655 nm). To confirm the high quality of our different core/shell nanoplatelets for a specific application, we demonstrate their use as gain media in low-threshold ring lasers. More generally, the ability of our synthesis protocol to engineer high-quality shells can help further improve nanoplatelets for optoelectronic devices.</div>
