Rare earth ions are actively investigated as optically addressable spin systems for quantum technologies thanks to their long optical and spin coherence lifetimes. 171Yb3+, which has 1/2 electron and nuclear spins, recently raised interest for its simple hyperfine structure that moreover can result in long coherence lifetimes at zero magnetic field, an unusual property for paramagnetic rare earth ions. Here, we report on the optical inhomogeneous and homogeneous linewidths in 171Yb3+:Y2SiO5 (site 2) for different doping concentrations. While inhomogeneous linewidth is not correlated to 171Yb3+ concentration, the homogeneous one strongly decreases between 10 and 2 ppm doping level, reaching 255 Hz at 3 K. This is attributed to a slowing down of 171Yb3+ ground state spin flip-flops.

ATR and transmission spectra of a series of rare-earth francisite-like phases Cu3RE(SeO3)2O2Cl (RE is a rare earth element, RE = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb) were studied. The frequencies of the IR-active phonons of the crystals under study were determined. In the dependences of phonon frequencies on the ionic radius in a series of isostructural compounds, two tendencies are observed: a hardening of frequencies due to an increase in chemical pressure and a softening of the vibration frequencies, in which rare-earth ions are involved, due to an increase in the mass of a specific rare-earth ion. In the Cu3Dy(SeO3)2O2Cl crystal, an anomalous softening of low-frequency phonons at low temperatures was observed, which was apparently associated with the structural instability of the compound.

In this work, we studied the phase composition, local structure and mechanical characteristics of ZrO2 crystals partially stabilized with Y2O3 and co-doped with Nd2O3, CeO2, Er2O3, Tb2O3 and Yb2O3. Crystals were grown by directional melt crystallization in a cold container. The phase composition and structure of crystals were studied by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The study of the features of the incorporation of rare-earth cations with different ionic radii into the transformable (t) and nontransformable (t’) tetragonal phases was carried out by the method of selective laser spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy. Mechanical characteristics such as microhardness and fracture toughness were studied by the indentation method. It is shown that the phase composition and structure of crystals at the same total concentration of doping oxides depends on the degree of substitution of Y3+ cations by rare-earth cations. Rare earth ions of the beginning of the lanthanide series predominantly occupy positions in the nontransformable tetragonal phase of crystals based on zirconium dioxide. Ions of the end of a series of lanthanides do not show selectivity when entering the transformable (t) phase and nontransformable (t’) phase. The study of the mechanical characteristics of the crystals showed that the values of fracture toughness increase with an increase in the ionic radius of the rare earth element of the co-doped oxide, while the values of the microhardness of the crystals slightly decrease.

In this work we review the effect of physical and optical properties with different ion zinc contents of tellurite base glass. The physical properties of the glasses were evaluated and the change in density, molar volume and ionic packing density in these glasses indicates the effect of ZnO different content show on the glasses structure. The study of optical properties such as the optical band gap and refractive index of zinc tellurite glass were studied. Zinc Tellurite glasses doped with Er3+ ions were synthesized by varies researcher. The glasses were characterized by X- ray diffraction, optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra. The glassy nature of zinc Tellurite host glass has been confirmed through XRD measurements. The glasses doped or co-doped with rare-earth ions have generated much interest due to the possibility of several promising applications such as optical data storage, visible laser, fibre amplifier, optical communication and sensor devices

A 3–5 μm mid-infrared band is a good window for atmospheric transmission. It has the advantages of high contrast and strong penetration under high humidity conditions. Therefore, it has important applications in the fields of laser medicine, laser radar, environmental monitoring, remote sensing, molecular spectroscopy, industrial processing, space communication and photoelectric confrontation. In this paper, the application background of mid-infrared laser is summarized. The ways to realize mid-infrared laser output are described by optical parametric oscillation, mid-infrared solid-state laser doped with different active ions and fiber laser doped with different rare earth ions. The advantages and disadvantages of various mid-infrared lasers are briefly described. The technical approaches, schemes and research status of mid-infrared lasers are introduced.
