Rice husk ash (RHA) was used to prepare sodium silicate, which in turn was functionalized with 3-(chloropropyl)triethoxysilane employing the sol-gel technique to form RHACCl. Chloro group in RHACCl was replaced with iodo group forming RHACI. Ethylenediamine was immobilized on RHACI in order to prepare it for the reaction with salicylaldehyde to form a silica derivative-salen. FT-IR analysis indicated the presence of secondary amine and –NH and C=N absorption bands. XRD analysis revealed the occurrence of the broad diffused peak with maximum intensity at 22–23° (2θ). BET measurements showed also that the surface area of the prepared compound is 274.55 m2/g. Elemental analysis proved the existence of nitrogen in the structure of the prepared compound. The silica derivative-salen showed high potential for extraction and removal of heavy contaminating metal ions Ni(II), Cu(II), and Co(II) from aqueous solutions. The kinetic study demonstrates that the adsorption of the metal ions follows the pseudo-second order.

Rice husk ash (RHA), an agricultural waste, was used as biosorbent for the removal of Iron(II) and Manganese(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The structural and morphological characteristics of RHA and its elemental compositions before and after adsorption of Fe(II) and Mn(II) were determined by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the influence of initial pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration on the removal of Fe(II) and Mn(II) ions. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of the metal ions by RHA. The correlation coefficient (R2) of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models equals 0.995 and 0.901 for Fe(II), 0.9862 and 0.8924 for Mn(II), respectively, so the Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich isotherm model. The mean free energy values evaluated from the D-R model indicated that the biosorption of Fe(II) and Mn(II) onto RHA was physical in nature. Experimental data also showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions complied with the pseudo-second-order kinetics.

In the present work, synthesis of (3-ethylene diamino propyl)-trimethoxysilane (EDAPTMS)-functionalized silica prepared from rice husk ash (RHA) and its adsorptivity of Cu(II), Cr(III), and      Pb(II) in an aqueous solution was investigated. The EDAPTMS-functionalized silica was prepared by destruction of RHA with 4 M NaOH solution followed by functionalization by using the sol-gel method. The interaction was engaged by mixing EDAPTMS with silica gel in an acid condition followed by aging.  The gel obtained from the procedure was analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and a surface area analyzer (SAA). Effect of EDAPTMS content on the material character and adsorption capability are the focuses of the study. The adsorption study was conducted in a batch adsorption system for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) mixed solution and metal ion analyses were performed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed that enhancement of physicochemical character was obtained after modification Based on the quantitative analysis of each metal, the kinetics of adsorption of a single solution of each ion and mixed solutions were studied. as shown by the increasing specific surface area as well as the increasing adsorption rate of the metal ions along increasing EDAPTMS content. Langmuir and Freundlich models were utilized for the kinetic study. Adsorption selectivity and adsorption kinetics were found to be strongly influenced by ionic coordination bonding with metal ions. The interpretation of the kinetic models showed the fitness of the Freundlich model for all metal ions. Copyright © 2018 BCREC Group.
