Examination of a small collection of Oniscidea from Costa Rica revealed the presence of two species new to science (Ischioscia martinae sp.nov. and Scleropactes talamancensis sp.nov.). Further specimens from the collection of the United States National Museum were reexamined to reconsider the status of Philoscia muscorum (Scopoli, 1793) and Ischioscia variegata (Dollfus, 1893), both of which have been reported from Costa Rica. The specimens belong to two new species (Ischioscia muelleri sp.nov. and Ischioscia elongata sp.nov.). Redescriptions of Ligia baudiniana Milne Edwards, 1840 from the shores of both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and the type material of Ischioscia variegata (Dollfus, 1893) from Venezuela are also presented.

Pomatostegus Schmarda, 1861 is a serpulid genus with three recognized species, mostly from tropical waters. Pomatostegus stellatus (Abildgaard, 1789), was described from the Caribbean Sea, and has been widely recorded in the Pacific and Indian oceans; P. kroyeri Mörch, 1863 was described from Puntarenas, Costa Rica; however, most records from the Tropical Eastern Pacific were referred to P. stellatus. In this work, the two species are redescribed using morphological characters. The main differences are in the shape of the Spirobranchus-type collar chaetae, opercular plate shape and the number of “free” circlets of spines without accompanying of opercular plates. Comments about characters of P. actinoceras Mörch, 1863, described from Philippines, and an identification key for the three species, are included.

Abstract: Seven species of terrestrial isopods are recorded from the coasts of the Pacific and Caribbean sides of Costa Rica. Three species (Buchnerillo neotropicalis, Hawaiioscia nicoyaensis and Trichorhina biocellata) are described as new and two species (Tylos niveus and Armadilloniscus cf. caraibicus) are newly recorded from the country. The poorly known species T. niveus is also illustrated. At present the total number of terrestrial isopod species recorded from Costa Rica is 30. Interestingly four typical littoral halophilic species (Ligia baudiniana, Tylos wegeneri, T. niveus and A. cf. caraibicus) are present on both the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and on the coasts of the lands encompassed by the Caribbean Sea. With the sole exception of A. cf. caraibicus, no morphological differences could be detected from the Pacific and Caribbean populations of those species. Rev. Biol. Trop. 66(Suppl. 1): S187-S210. Terrestrial tardigrades were collected from moss, lichen and leaf litter from Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, West Indies. Six species were found. Milnesium tardigradum Doyère, 1840, Minibiotus intermedius (Plate, 1889), Paramacrobiotus areolatus (Murray, 1907) and P. richtersi (Murray, 1911) have been reported previously from other islands in the Caribbean Sea. Two species on Grand Cayman were new to science. Doryphoribius tessellatus sp. n. belongs to the ‘eveli- nae-group’, with two macroplacoids and cuticular gibbosities. In having two pairs of posterior gibbosities and cuticular depressions forming a reticular design, it is most similar to Doryphoribius quadrituberculatus Kaczmarek & Michalczyk, 2004 from Costa Rica. It differs from D. quadrituberculatus in its gibbosity sequence (III:4:2:2), the number of teeth, size of macroplacoids and details of the reticular design on the dorsal cuticle. Macrobiotus caymanensis sp. n. belongs to the ‘polyopus-group’ of species. It differs from other species of the group in having a shorter buccal tube, a more posterior stylet support insertion point and fewer, larger egg processes.

The thermal structure of the environmental atmosphere associated with Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) is investigated with the combined observations from several detectors (FERMI, RHESSI, and Insight-HXMT) and GNSS-RO (SAC-C, COSMIC, GRACE, TerraSAR-X, and MetOp-A). The geographic distributions of TGF-related tropopause altitude and climatology are similar. The regional TGF-related tropopause altitude in Africa and the Caribbean Sea is 0.1–0.4 km lower than the climatology, whereas that in Asia is 0.1–0.2 km higher. Most of the TGF-related tropopause altitudes are slightly higher than the climatology, while some of them have a slightly negative bias. The subtropical TGF-producing thunderstorms are warmer in the troposphere and have a colder and higher tropopause over land than the ocean. There is no significant land–ocean difference in the thermal structure for the tropical TGF-producing thunderstorms. The TGF-producing thunderstorms have a cold anomaly in the middle and upper troposphere and have stronger anomalies than the deep convection found in previous studies.
