This paper presents Learning disabilities (LD) as an impediment to vocational choice and development of secondary school students in Nigeria. Learning Disabilities is a lifelong developmental problem that affects the learner's ability to learn effectively and make a choice of the vocation of interest. The main thrust in the theories of learning disabilities is that LD is caused as a result of a subtle disturbance in the brain functions and structures. This problem is inherent in the individual thus inhibits learning abilities, social and psychological functioning of the learning disabled student. While the psychoanalytic view on vocational choice is positive for the normal student, it is however not the same for the learning disabled. Although factors as social, economic, psychological assets determine the vocational choice, the problem of choice of vocation is however complicated for the learning disabled. This is because the presence of emotional conflicts interferes with the ability of the learning disabled to make a choice. The major implication of these problems is that since the learning disabled students encounter emotional problems, occupation or the work environment should be adapted or altered so as to meet certain needs of the students. The recommendation offered suggests the establishment of model counselling and research centres in schools.

The article is devoted to a theoretical justification of dyscalculia showing a link between characteristics of brain functions and expressions of learning disorders. Although dyscalculia and dyslexia are linked problems, the cognitive profile is different. Significant understanding of dyscalculia deals with origin and manifestations of it that affect learning in school and future quality of life. Development of neuroscience and brain studies performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allow accurate descriptions of problem and in addition to search for ways to reduce the negative effects of dyscalculia.

Word prompt programs are computer software programs or program features that are used in addition to basic word processing. These programs provide word lists from which a user selects a desired word and inserts it into a line of text. This software is used to support individuals with severe speech, physical, and learning disabilities. This tutorial describes the features of a variety of word prompt programs and reviews the current literature on the use of these programs by people with oral and written language needs. In addition, a matrix that identifies the features contained in eight sample word prompt programs is provided. The descriptions of features and the matrix are designed to assist speech-language pathologists and teachers in evaluating and selecting word prompt programs to support their clients' oral and written communication.
