In an attempt to decolonize Trauma Studies, a dominant mental health discourse, and to expand our understanding of trauma and post-traumatic growth, this project investigates J.M.G. Le Clézio’s The African (L’africain 2004) and Ahmadou Kourouma’s: Allah is Not Obliged 2011) (Allah n’est pas obligé 2000) and the untranslated and unfinished Quand on refuse on dit non (2004). The term “decolonizing Trauma Studies” refers to a remapping of this particular field of Cultural Theory by studying these non-Western “trauma novels”. The first critical suggestion advanced is that these authors explore the traumatic consequences of lies that are ontological and phenomenological in nature and maintained through language (logos). This research then examines Le Clézio’s and Kourouma’s models of healing, which centre on the body, language, and an empathetic re-encounter with the traumatized self through narratives. Another major finding is that these texts experiment with literature, manipulating it into new forms, thus expanding our understanding of the relationship between the literary arts and post-traumatic growth theories and treatments.

Background: Culture plays a vital role in resolving grief in African communities. However, women who terminate a pregnancy in adolescence are typically not exposed to cultural rituals that could ease their grief. Objectives: The purpose of this article is to explore the interaction of culture and grief amongst women who terminated a pregnancy in adolescence.Method: A qualitative exploratory study was undertaken using a narrative approach. Unstructured interviews were conducted to solicit narratives from 11 women who terminated a pregnancy in adolescence. Results: Data were analysed through narrative, thematic data analysis. Three themes emerged from the findings: delayed post-traumatic growth, low body esteem and an alteration in the development of maternal identity. Conclusion: The study intended to explore the interaction of culture and grief amongst women who terminated a pregnancy in adolescence. The researcher determined that women who had not honoured their culture because of the secrecy surrounding the termination of pregnancy had delayed healing and an altered self-image.

This chapter discusses the promise of new longitudinal methods for collecting psychological and behavioral data to examine the extent to which post-traumatic growth is possible. These methods include weekly in-the-moment self-reports of functioning as individuals go about their everyday lives via mobile health methods, in addition to retrospective self-reports of character. To examine the potential of such methodologies, the chapter uses the example case of whether and to what extent post-traumatic growth should be expected in women who experience breast cancer diagnosis. This research represents a promising way to move in a direction for uncovering post-traumatic growth. Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment are potent stressors for the individual. This may be particularly so for younger patients (<40 years) where the disease can be more aggressive, with a higher potential for lost years of life. Yet women differ greatly in their responses to diagnosis and treatment. Some cultivate new relationships, experience psychological growth, and act more prosocially and altruistically. Some evidence suggests that certain types of character growth in response to stressful life events may be associated with better psychological and physiological outcomes after the event is over. However, there are limited prospective longitudinal data to indicate which specific character traits primarily change in response to life challenges and which are most associated with changes in actual behavior. This chapter discusses how the implementation of multiple methods will better allow researchers to characterize the trajectories of character traits and actions following adversity.

Method: qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, supported in Oral Thematic History. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women with cancer and the empirical material was analyzed by the thematic analysis and presented by thematic axes. Results: three thematic axes emerged: 1) Between sadness and courage: feelings of women facing the diagnosis of cancer; 2) Recognizing the body after cancer diagnosis; 3) Difficulties faced by women with cancer: overcoming challenges. Conclusion: women presented feelings of sadness, isolation, resilience and resignification before life. Most have undergone changes in the body because of the disease, negatively impacting femininity. Among the difficulties faced, in addition to prejudice, they suffered with exclusion and abandonment after diagnosis. It was noticed the need for research that seeks to understand the feminine universe in the fight of cancer considering that the understanding and the confrontation of the disease are influenced by the gender.
