Abstract Background: The impact of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) on quality of life (QoL) of patients is significant and has important social and professional consequences. Methods: We aimed to describe the patients’ perspective regarding the impact of IBD on their overall QoL and to evaluate the differences between men and women. An observational cross-sectional study, that included 180 patients with IBD in clinical remission, was conducted. All the patients completed a number of 3 questionnaires in order to evaluate the general aspects of their QoL. A separate questionnaire was created regarding gender-specific issues in women with IBD encounter. Also, particular features such as the incidence of anemia and osteoporosis among IBD patients were documented. The data obtained were analyzed and compared between the two gender-classified groups. Results: According to the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ), patients had a general perception of a good QoL, but the impact was higher in women. Fatigue and tiredness were severely perceived almost to the same degree regardless of gender, whereas anxiety and unemployment were more present in men. No significant differences in women with IBD during active disease and during disease remission were found. Conclusions: The overall quality of life of IBD patients is affected in many aspects, leading to the deterioration of their social and professional lives, for both men and women, but some aspects remain gender-specific and require a personalized standard of care.

The relative contributions of factors operating in fetal life, childhood, and adulthood to the risk of disease in middle age have become important research issues, but self-perceived oral health has rarely been considered in this context. This study investigated the impact of risk factors operating throughout life on self-perceived oral health, according to the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), at age 50 yrs in 305 individuals from the Newcastle Thousand Families cohort. Factors from early and adult life contributed to the OHIP scores, but in men, self-perceived oral health was mostly explained by factors operating early in life. In women, the number of teeth retained in adulthood had a more prominent impact. Lifecourse influences on oral-health-related quality of life appear different for men and women, which may have implications for the effectiveness of public health interventions and health promotion.

ObjectiveFoot problems (FP) may be considered to be a prevalent conditions in people but there is limited evidence of their effect on the quality of life (QoL) related to foot health in men and women. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of FPs on both overall foot health and QoL, stratified by gender.DesignA cross sectional study.SettingClinic of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at University of A Coruña in the city of Ferrol (Spain).SubjectsThe sample consisted of 1647 participants with FP; the total population of the sample had a mean age of 43.24±19.89 years, with mean ages 44.09±21.36 years and 42.94±19.34 years for men and women, respectively.MethodsMeasurement of sociodemographic characteristics include age, sex and body mass index. The Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) was used to evaluate the general health and foot health. Differences between groups were evaluated by means of a t-test for independent samples.ResultsWomen with FP showed significantly lower scores in the domains of Foot Pain, Foot Function, Footwear, General Foot Health, Physical Activity and Vigour, and there was no difference compared with men in the domains of Overall Health and Social Capacity.ConclusionsWomen with FP present a negative impact on QoL related to foot health as compared with men except in the domains of Overall Health and Social Capacity, which appears to be associated with the presence of foot conditions.

Objective: to study the basic quality of life in patients with chronic kidney disease and their relationship, with different numbers formed arteriovenous fistula. Materials and methods. Interviewed 56patients, who are treated with chronic hemodialysis department. To study the quality of life used (KDQOL-SF ™). Also used a questionnaire that enables presence fistula determine the impact on quality of life of patients. Results. Using statistical method cluster analysis, made differentiation studied three groups - clusters, which differ in different levels of the indicators of QOL, namely «Patients middle-manifestation of physical and psychological indicators of QOL» – 40%, «Patients with low the manifestation of physical and psychological QOL parameters «- 25% of subjects, and» Patients with high level of physical and psychological manifestations of QOL performance «- 35% sample of of the patients. Based on statistical comparative analysis revealed differences between the estimated quality of life in men and women. Role functioning due to physical condition in women is slightly lowered than men. In women, there is a greater level of pain than men. Men overall higher rate their health than women. Men are characterized by a higher level of social functioning than women. Conclusions. Patients with chronic hemodialysis age have difficulties in physical functioning and performance of daily affairs. Mental health by increasing the biological age becomes stronger and fitter. His attitude to the presence of fistula in upper limb showing men and women equally, that they feel discomfort and limitations in performing daily routine. The more surgeries performed to form vascular access in patients, the occurrence characteristically uncomfortable sensations in all aspects of life

Abstract Background Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)/Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD) and tendonitis are considered a serious problem in the area of Occupational Health. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence of these disorders on the adult population of a metropolis in the state of São Paulo and to analyze their impact on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), according to gender. Methods A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the “Campinas City Health Survey (ISACamp 2014/15)”. The sample consisted of 2,166 individuals aged 18 years or older and the SF-36 instrument was used for HRQoL analysis. The association between the variables was verified by the chi-square test and the Poisson simple and multiple regression models were used to estimate the prevalence ratios (PR). In HRQoL estimates, the average SF-36 scores were calculated according to the independent variables. Results The prevalence of tendonitis and RSI/WMSD was 8.5%, with 6.7% tendonitis and 2.7% RSI/WMSD. The prevalence was higher among women (11%; 1.34-2.56), on individuals aged between 40-59 years (PR = 3.63; 2.28-5.80), who were on occupational activity (PR = 2.04; 1.12-3.68) or on work leave (PR = 7.07; 2.77-18.03) and on the most educated (PR = 2.45; 1.28-4.70). Subjects with these morbidities decreased in 6 of the 8 HRQoL domains and on stratification by gender, we observed that women had greater decreases in mental component scores in the presence of RSI/WMSD and men in physical component (p < 0.05). Conclusions The diseases analyzed can affect men and women differently, and it is essential to consider the peculiarity of the impact between the sexes in the elaboration of interventions and preventive measures aimed at improving the quality of life. Key messages No population-based studies were found that assess the impact of RSI/WMSD on HRQoL, according to gender differences, showing the relevance of this study. It is very important to understand how these diseases affect men and women differently so that specific and more effective preventive and rehabilitative measures can be carried out.

Aim. To study the impact of the aesthetic component of dental health on the quality of life of young patients. Methods. 83 subjects with violation of the aesthetics of hard tissues of the anterior group of teeth were examined and treated. Assessment of stability of composite restorations with materials of Russian and foreign production was carried out according to Ryge criteria. A brief questionnaire (the world health organization quality of life WHOQOL-BREF) was used to assess the quality of life. Results. With the material Filtek Z550 violation of surface preservation occurred in 6 (15.8%) out of 38 men and only 1 (2.2%) out of 45 women (p=0.026). With Estelux NK material the violation of the seal surface preservation occurred in 5 (13.2%) out of 38 men and 2 (4.4%) out of 45 women, the findings are not statistically significant (p=0.15). The total index of quality of life in men and women significantly improved 6 months after the restoration and amounted to 88.7±5.4 points (p=0.024) and 88.4±7.3 (p=0.034), respectively, compared to test results prior to treatment. Stability of the quality of the restoration according to Ryge criteria of both photocomposite materials (Estelux NK and Filtek Z550) had no significant differences, therefore, the domestic material Estelux NK, taking into account its financial availability, can be recommended for aesthetic dental rehabilitation of young patients. Conclusion. Restoration of the aesthetic optimum of men and women of young age leads to a subjective improvement of psychological comfort and objective increase of self-perception indices.

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the impact of type 2 diabetes on quality of life (QoL), taking into account gender differences in relation to individual domains of Diabetes-Related Quality of Life Audit (ADDQoL) in adult women and men from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.Material and methodsThe participants were 608 patients from three countries, of whom 278 were women and 330 men with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The tool used in the study was the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL).ResultsThe overall average QoL was slightly higher in men than in women. In ADDQoL scores, mean weighted impact scores were negative for all of the domains. The domain which was the most affected by type 2 diabetes in both men and women from all three countries was the "freedom to eat"; while the "living conditions" domain was the least affected. Diabetes had a slightly negative average weighted impact on most men and women - AWI<-3.0.Except for the different AWI scores in men with type 2 diabetes depending on their education, neither women nor men revealed any significant changes in terms of the impact of education, residence, marital status, smoking, hypertension, or taking anti-hypertensive drugs. ConclusionsType 2 diabetes mellitus negatively affects all the domains of life, in both women and men in all three countries; however, this impact is inconsiderable. The participants assess their quality of life as good and very good.
