This is the ninth article in a series that explores the meaning of positive psychology and the importance it has on the wellbeing of the mental health workforce. It will focus on positive psychology interventions that help to develop resilience and to consider how the uplifting effect of resilience through contemporary use in the field of mental health nursing can be experienced. This article will explain what the term resilience means and how it is embedded in the practice of positive psychological interventions. Finally, it will emphasise how the application of positive psychological interventions can benefit the individual and the organisation. The practical tasks provided in the boxes throughout the article will help the reader identify what resilience means for them and understand how to further develop its transferability through evidence-based, user-friendly exercises.

Biopsychosocial factors related to chronic pain are discussed as a necessary foundation for understanding and helping clients who are in pain. Familiar evidence-based counseling approaches that have proven useful for working with clients who are in pain are reviewed to identify how practitioners can use their counseling skills to help these clients. Approaches reviewed are assessment considerations, use of psychotropic medications, cognitive-behavioral strategies, hypnosis and imagery techniques, family considerations, and positive psychology.

Anger in young people is on the increase worldwide and effective anger treatment services are in demand. However, the lack of research on the construct of anger and little evidence-based practice makes it difficult to ascertain the best service for these angry young people. Moreover, there is a lack of extensive evidence and qualitative research in the combination of psychoeducation and positive psychology interventions in anger management programmes for young people. Therefore, this chapter will summarise a phenomenological study of an existing psychoeducational anger management programme in the UK and discuss its findings. This chapter will present anger and positive psychology in the context of developing an effective anger management programme and provide a simple anger management strategy to use as a foundation for developing anger management programmes in schools.

This chapter aims to provide useful information about the implementation of diversity equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) to improve organizational performance. This chapter provides a conceptual framework for organizational leaders who desire additional awareness and knowledge regarding the nature, extent, and impact of diverse employees' barriers. Further, the purpose of this endeavor is to demonstrate that the persistent lack of recruitment, promotion, and retention of diverse employees is due to systemic, structural, organizational, institutional, cultural, and societal obstacles. Further, the theory of generative interactions (TGI) supports how obstacles must be acknowledged and eliminated through increased awareness of the issues linked to evidence-based, data-driven approaches leading to measurable key process indicators (KPIs) and outcomes. To support DEIB initiatives, many organizations have developed the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) position to manage the process, eliminate barriers, and proactively strengthen organizational culture.

Positive psychotherapy (PPT) is an emerging therapeutic approach that is broadly based on the principles of positive psychology (PP). PP studies the conditions and processes that enable individuals, communities, and institutions to flourish. PPT is the clinical or therapeutic arm of PP. PPT integrates symptoms with strengths, risks with resources and deficits with assets. Without dismissing the severity psychiatric distress, or naively minimizing clients’ genuine concerns, PPT identifies and teaches clients evidence-based skills which use their best resources to meet their toughest challenges. Specifically, PPT helps clients to translate their cognitive, emotional, social and cultural strengths into goal-oriented, purposeful and pragmatic actions and habits, which aim to reduce their psychiatric distress as well as enhance their well-being. A strengths-based approach such as PPT can improve the effectiveness of psychotherapy by expanding the scope of psychotherapy, broadening beyond the medical model, expanding the outcome of psychotherapy, and attenuating the impact on the clinician.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show the value of benchmarking organizational performance in order to enable conversations about workflow analysis and potential changes. Design/methodology/approach – Data from a time-to-shelf study are compared to literature describing similar studies at other academic libraries which enable the decision-making process for a new workflow. Findings – The results of a time-to-shelf study necessitated a change in workflow. This paper examines how the data enabled staff to agree to changes and supported the decision-making process. Originality/value – This paper examines the impact of evidence-based decision making on the performance and workflow of a technical services department.
