The Age of Electricity was foreshadowed by the “battle of the currents.” This almost forgotten controversy had important technological implications, but it is also a macabre chapter in the history of marketing tactics. Westinghouse's superior alternating current system was ingeniously attacked by proponents of direct current. Exploiting contemporary evidence from the penitentiary, the direct-current adherents declaimed against use by the public of a system employed by the state to rid itself of its most dangerous criminals.

AbstractDistinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) is an intellectual property system introduced in 1961 by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) for safeguarding the investment and rewarding innovation in developing new plant varieties. Despite the rapid advancement in our understanding of crop biology over the past 60 years, the DUS system has changed little and is still largely dependent upon a set of morphological traits for testing candidate varieties. As the demand for more plant varieties increases, the barriers to registration of new varieties become more acute and thus require urgent review to the system. To highlight the challenges and remedies in the current system, we evaluated a comprehensive panel of 805 UK barley varieties that span the entire history of DUS testing. Our findings reveal the system deficiencies such as inconsistencies in DUS traits across environments, limitations in DUS trait combinatorial space, and inadequacies in currently available DUS markers. We advocate the concept of genomic DUS and provide evidence for a shift towards a robust genomics-enabled registration system for new crop varieties.

With the application scale and area of the building PV power station continuous extension, data transmission and monitoring management of the building PV power station have become increasingly important. This paper introduces a kind of data delivering and distributed monitoring management system of the building PV power station based on ZigBee wireless network, this system has information transmission modules based on ZigBee wireless network, region monitoring and magement module and remote access module. ZigBee wireless network could deliver datas of the building PV power station to the center of region monitoring and management system, ultimately, the datas were deposited in the database of region monitoring and management system,The Electricity Regulatory Office and The Power Company used remote transmission and monitoring system by remote access system on the Internet, to access data reports of the building PV power station in the database of region monitoring and magement system.System test results can carry out the building PV power station’s data transmission, monitoring system’s data management and remote access by the Internet.

History of Indian education dates back to over 5,000 years. Education in the Vedic and Muslim periods was found to be based on religion while the Buddhist period gave world-class universities. In the British period, education oscillated between being a central subject and a provincial subject. The Constitution of India placed education as a state subject, which was later transferred to the Concurrent List in 1976. But due to lack of coordination between the centre and state governments, the higher education system is found to be in a critical state. Further, there is significant disparity in funds allocation to central and state universities by the central regulator, UGC, which further worsens the situation. The current system can work, if the centre makes the law with a broader view and leaves the states with enough power to customise it. There is need to establish State Education Councils in every state to better assess the need of state universities and recommend/allocate the funds accordingly.

This paper documents the history of hydrogen damage to a large central station steam-generating unit. The nature and extent of the damage are discussed, and the inspection techniques used to detect damaged areas are described. Boiler operation, chemistry of boiler water, feedwater treatment, and other influencing factors are also discussed.
