AbstractPaper spray ionization (PSI) mass spectrometry (MS) is an emerging tool for ambient reaction monitoring via microdroplet reaction acceleration. PSI-MS was used to accelerate and monitor the time course of the reaction of dansyl chloride with aniline, in acetonitrile, to produce dansyl aniline. Three distinct PSI arrangements were explored in this study representing alternative approaches for sample loading and interaction; conventional single tip as well as two novel setups, a dual-tip and a co-axial arrangement were designed so as to limit any on-paper interaction between reagents. The effect on product abundance was investigated using these different paper configurations as it relates to the time course and distance of microdroplet travel. It was observed that product yield increases at a given distance and then decreases thereafter for all PSI configurations. The fluorescent property of the product (dansyl aniline) was used to visually inspect the reaction progress on the paper substrate during the spraying process. Amongst the variety of sample loading methods the novel dual-tip arrangement showed an increased product yield and microdroplet density, whilst avoiding any on-paper interaction between the reagents.

Zinc sulfamate (Zn(NH2SO3)2 is a derivative of sulfamic acid (H3NSO3) which possesses “Lewis acidity” and finds well suited in a number of catalytic applications. The present paper describes an efficient, eco-friendly, and clean synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives by reacting diverse o-phenylenediamine with various substituted aromatic aldehydes using a catalytic amount of zinc sulfamate in ethanol at ambient temperature. As a result, 10 mol.% of Zinc sulfamate catalyst showed 92% of respective product yield with 100% conversion using short reaction period in ethanol. Meanwhile, effect of reaction parameters, such as amount of catalyst, different solvents, and reaction temperature on reaction product, was also studied. In addition, in the optimized reaction condition various substituted biological important benzimidazoles derivatives were prepared by using optimized reaction condition in good to efficient yield. In addition, possible reaction mechanism in the presence of zinc sulfamate for the preparation of benzimidazole derivative was sketched and discussed. The present green approach showed significances with faster reaction rate with inexpensive catalyst, which showed excellent and clean yield of benzimidazole in mild reaction condition with easy work-up procedure.

The species Arrabidaea chica (Humb. & Bonpl.) B. Verl. (Bignoniaceae) is a plant native to tropical forests, popularly known as pariri or crajiru, and it is widely used in folk medicine to treat inflammatory diseases, anemias, skin diseases and to assist in the treatment of leukemia. Because of the widespread use of the plant, concern with its quality and effectiveness is fundamental. This study demonstrates the application of mass spectrometry with ionization by paper spray (PS-MS) as a chemical characterization method to evaluate the presence of the active principles in teas prepared by infusion from commercial samples of the medicinal plant Arrabidaea chica by infusion. The analyses of the samples were performed in two periods: 24 hours and 15 days after the preparation of the teas. Compounds referring to the class of substances 3-deoxythocyanidins were detected without any pre-treatment of the sample or chromatographic separation to provide valuable information for the evaluation and quality control of this product. Significant changes in the m/z signals of greater intensity, referring to the class of 3-deoxythocyanidins, were observed in the mass spectra, and multivariate analysis corroborated the degradation of this class of substances with time, resulting in a probable loss of the quality and effectiveness of the tea.

The reactions of tetrabutylammonium aci-nitronates with p-dinitrobenzene in dimethyl sulfoxide, benzene or acetone proceed far more rapidly than the reactions of the corresponding lithium salts and give, in unhindered cases, good yields of C-arylates, e.g. p-(1-methyl-1-nitroethyl)nitrobenzene (in 73-89% yields) and p-nitro(l,3,3-trimethyl-1-nitrobuty1)benene (in 70% yield). With more sterically hindered nitronates, O-arylation increases, giving phenols and ketoxime O-p-nitrophenyl ethers, presumably derived from the novel, intermediate p-nitrophenyl aci-nitronate esters. aci-Nitronate ions with more than two β-methyl groups gave no C-arylation. Similar results were obtained with p-fluoronitrobenzene and p-nitrobenzonitrile, A mechanism for the conversion of the intermediate aci-nitronate esters into the ketoxime ethers is proposed.
