ABSTRACTA new family of light-controllable chiral photochromic multifunctional liquid crystalline (LC) side-chain acrylic polymers consisting of nematogenic, chiral and photochromic monomer units was obtained. The new principle of photoregulation of the helical supramolecular structure and optical properties of the binary and ternary chiral photochromic LC polymers based on the change of helical twisting power of the chiral photochromic monomer units was developed. The features of photooptical behaviour of LC polymers possessing the dual photochromism and the peculiarities of optical data recording based on the photochemical spectral gap burning were presented and discussed. The synthesized polymers are shown to be promising candidates for colour data recording and storage.

ABSTRACTThis review focuses on a new type of para-catenated aromatic polymer being used in the preparation of high-performance films and fibers of exceptional strength, thermal stability, and environmental resistance, including inertness to essentially all common solvents. Polymers of this type include the cis- and trans-poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO), the cis- and trans-forms of the corresponding poly(pphenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBT), and the structurally similar poly(5,5ʹ-bibenzoxazole-2.2ʹ-diyl-l,3-phenylene) (AAPBO) and poly(2,5-benzoxazole) (ABPBO) and their sulfurcontaining analogues. Because of their rigidity, these polymers become highly oriented in solution and some display liquid crystalline behavior. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the authorsʹ theoretical work on the structures, conformational energies, intermolecular interactions, electronic properties, electrical conductivity, and electrooptical properties of these chains, including, in some cases, the so-called articulated forms and the protonated forms known to exist in strong acids. The emphasis is on how such studies provide a molecular understanding of the unusual properties and processing characteristics of this new class of materials.

Flexible construction of permanently stored supramolecular chirality with stimulus-responsiveness remains a big challenge. Herein, we describe an efficient method to realize the transfer and storage of chirality in intrinsically achiral films of a side-chain polymeric liquid crystal system by combining chiral doping and cross-linking strategy. Even the helical structure was destroyed by UV light irradiation, the memorized chiral information in the covalent network enabled complete self-recovery of the original chiral superstructure. These results allowed the building of a novel chiroptical switch without any additional chiral source in multiple types of liquid crystal polymers, which may be one of the competitive candidates for use in stimulus-responsive chiro-optical devices.

In this study, a new type of functional hybrid suspension for solar energy conversion and thermal energy storage was prepared by adding carbon nanotube (CNT) and microencapsulated phase-change material (MEPCM) into deionized water. MEPCM with octadecane as the core material and titania (TiO2) as the shell material was synthesized by the sol–gel method. The MEPCMs were spherical particles with diameters of 2–4 μm, and the thickness of the shell was about 100 nm. The MEPCM achieved better thermal stability and thermal conductivity than the pure octadecane due to the TiO2 shell. The melting and solidification latent heats of the MEPCM were about 154.24 and 154.26 J/g, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency of octadecane was calculated to be 65.84%. Most of all, the novel hybrid CNT and MEPCM suspensions exhibited remarkable dispersion stability owing to the stable reticular structure composed of CNT in the suspension. Compared with pure water, the thermal conductivity, specific heat of the MEPCM/CNT suspension improved by 34.48 and 43.57%, respectively and the photo-thermal conversion efficiency reached a high value of 86.0%. This work provided a new type of hybrid functional suspension towards direct absorption solar collector for solar energy conversion and storage.
