AbstractThermoelectric properties of a homologous series of Magnéli phase titanium oxides TinO2n-1 (n = 2, 3..) have been investigated. Dense polycrystalline specimens with nominal composition of TiO2-x (x = 0.10, 0.20) have been prepared by conventional hot-pressing. X-ray diffraction analysis has revealed that prepared specimens are slightly reduced during hot-pressing. Electrical conduction is of n-type for all prepared titanium oxides and electrical resistivity and absolute values of Seebeck coefficient decrease with increasing oxygen deficiency. The carrier concentration of Magnéli phase titanium oxide increases with increasing oxygen deficiency. Lattice thermal conductivity decreases with increasing oxygen deficiency by more than 60% at room temperature and 40% at 773K compared to TiO2, which can be due to the presence of dense planar defects. The largest thermoelectric figure of merit Z, 1.6×10-4 K-1 at 773K, was obtained in TiO1.90 hot pressed specimen.

ABSTRACTThermoelectric properties of low dimensional structures based on PbTe/PbSrTe-multiple quantum-well (MQW)-structures with regard to the structural dimensions, doping profiles and levels are presented. Interband transition energies and barrier band-gap are determined from IR-transmission spectra and compared with Kronig-Penney calculations. The influence of the data evaluation method to obtain the 2D power factor will be discussed. The thermoelectrical data of our layers show a more modest enhancement in the power factor σS2 compared with former publications and are in good agreement with calculated data from Broido et al. [5]. The maximum allowed doping level for modulation doped MQW structures is determined. Thermal conductivity measurements show that a ZT enhancement can be achieved by reducing the thermal conductivity due to interface scattering. Additionally promising lead chalcogenide based superlattices for an increased 3D figure of merit are presented.

ABSTRACTWe present the structure and thermoelectric properties of the new quaternary selenides K1+xM4–2xBi7+xSe15 (M = Sn, Pb) and K1-xSn5-xBi11+xSe22. The compounds K1+xM4-2xBi7+xSe15 (M= Sn, Pb) crystallize isostructural to A1+xPb4-2xSb7+xSe15 with A = K, Rb, while K1-xSn5-xBi11+xSe22 reveals a new structure type. In both structure types fragments of the Bi2Te3-type and the NaCl-type are connected to a three-dimensional anionic framework with K+ ions filled tunnels. The two structures vary by the size of the NaCl-type rods and are closely related to β-K2Bi8Se13 and K2.5Bi8.5Se14. The thermoelectric properties of K1+xM4-2xBi7+xSe15 (M = Sn, Pb) and K1-xSn5-xBi11+xSe22 were explored on single crystal and ingot samples. These compounds are narrow gap semiconductors and show n-type behavior with moderate Seebeck coefficients. They have very low thermal conductivity due to an extensive disorder of the metal atoms and possible “rattling” K+ ions.

This study examined the degradation of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in electrochemical oxidation (EO) processes in the presence of trichloroethylene (TCE). The EO experiment was performed in a gas-tight reactor using Magnéli phase titanium suboxide (Ti4O7) as the anode. The experimental data demonstrated that 75% of PFOS (2 μM) was degraded at 10 mA/cm2 current density in 30 min without TCE present in the solution, while the presence of 76 μM TCE apparently inhibited the degradation of PFOS, reducing its removal down to 53%. Defluorination ratio suggested that PFOS was significantly mineralized upon EO treatment, and it appeared to be not influenced by the presence of TCE. The respective pseudo-first order rate constants (kobs) of PFOS removal were 0.0471 and 0.0254 min-1 in the absence and presence of TCE. The degradation rates of both PFOS and TCE increased with current density rising from 2.5 to 20 mA/cm2. In the presence of TCE, chloride, chlorate, and perchlorate were formed that accounted for 79.7 %, 5.53%, and 1.51% of the total chlorine at 60 min. This work illustrates the promise of the Magnéli phase Ti4O7 electrode based electrochemical oxidation technology for degrading per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and co-contaminants in groundwaters.

[Formula: see text] ceramic samples have a structure similar to phonon glass electronic crystals, and their thermoelectric properties can be effectively adjusted through repeated grinding and sintering. The results show that multi-sintering can make their grain refined and increase their grain boundary, which will effectively increase density and phonon scattering. Finally, multi-sintering can reduce the resistivity and thermal conductivity, thus obviously improve thermoelectric figure of merit [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text]. The optimum [Formula: see text] value of 0.26 is achieved at 923 K by the third sintered sample.

Single-phase filled skutterudite compounds, CeyFexCo4−xSb12 (x = 0 to 3.0, y = 0 to 0.74), were synthesized by a melting method. The effects of Fe content and Ce filling fraction on the thermoelectric properties of CeyFexCo4−xSb12 were investigated. The lattice thermal conductivity of Ce-saturated CeyFexCo4−xSb12, y being at the maximum corresponding to x, decreased with increasing Fe content (x) and reached its minimum at about x = 1.5. When x was 1.5, lattice thermal conductivity decreased with increasing Ce filling fraction till y = 0.3 and then began to increase after reaching the minimum at y = 0.3. Hole concentration and electrical conductivity of Cey Fe1.5Co2.5Sb12 decreased with increasing Ce filling fraction. The Seebeck coefficient increased with increasing Ce filling fraction. The greatest dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit T value of 1.1 was obtained at 750 K for the composition of Ce0.28Fe1.52Co2.48Sb12.
