A highly efficient formate-piperidine-adduct based hydrogen storage system was developed. High-purity hydrogen can be produced with superior reaction kinetics under mild conditions. By integrating this system with renewable hydrogen and fuel cells, in-demand rechargeable hydrogen batteries could be realized for storing renewable energy.

A series of 3-arylidene-1,3-dihydroindol-2-one derivatives were conveniently synthesised by the condensation of aromatic aldehydes with 1,3-dihydroindol-2-one using a Brønsted acidic ionic liquid as a dual solvent-catalyst. This method has the advantages of short reaction times, simple work-up, high yields with high purity, being environmentally benign and the ionic liquid can be reused.

ABSTRACTSignificantly improved reaction kinetics and properties have been realized for reaction bonded Si3N4 (RBSN) by using Si powders having unusual physical and chemical characteristics combined with clean, oxygen-free processing conditions. For instance, complete nitridation can be achieved in < 1 h at 1150°C or < 100 m at 1250°C without pre-nucleation, or < 1 h at 1100°C with pre-nucleation. These compare with normal schedules of ∼100 h at 1470-1500°C. Resulting strengths (up to 870 MPa) and oxidation resistances of the RBSN essentially equal those of fully dense Si3N4 even though RBSN includes 25% open porosity. The results show that every aspect of the process, ranging from powder synthesis to < ppm levels of oxygen in the nitriding atmosphere, have demonstrable effects on the reaction kinetics and the resulting properties of the parts. With careful processing, reaction formed ceramics can compete advantageously with fully dense counterparts.

Reaction of o-azidobenzenesulfonamides with ethyl carbonochloridate afforded the corresponding amide derivatives, which gave 3-ethoxy-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine 1,1-dioxides through an intramolecular aza-Wittig reaction. The reaction was found to be general through the synthesis of a number of benzothiadiazine 1,1-dioxides. Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of 3-ethoxy-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine 1,1-dioxides furnished the 2-substituted benzothiadiazine-3-one 1,1-dioxides in good yields and high purity, which is the core moiety of RSV inhibitors.

Three novel spiroketals were prepared by a one-pot transformation of 6-O-methyl-9(E)-hydroxyiminoerythronolide A. We present the formation of a [4.5]spiroketal moiety within the macrolide lactone ring, but also the unexpected formation of a 10-C=11-C double bond and spontaneous change of stereochemistry at position 8-C. As a result, a thermodynamically stable structure was obtained. The structures of two new diastereomeric, unsaturated spiroketals, their configurations and conformations, were determined by means of NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling. The reaction kinetics and mechanistic aspects of this transformation are discussed. These rearrangements provide a facile synthesis of novel macrolide scaffolds.
