The occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) was studied in the drinking water samples from urban water supply network of Karachi city that served more than 18 million people. Drinking water samples were collected from 58 locations in summer (May-August) and winter (November-February) seasons. The major constituent of THMs detected was chloroform in winter (92.34%) and summer (93.07%), while the other THMs determined at lower concentrations. Summer and winter concentrations of total THMs at places exceed the levels regulated by UEPA (80 μg l-1) and WHO (100 μg l-1). GIS linked temporal variability in two seasons showed significantly higher median concentration (2.5%-23.06%) of THMs compared to winter.

A biosorbent was prepared by treating the persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) fallen leaves with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The NaOH concentration and stirring period for the preparation of the biosorbent were adjusted to optimise the Cd(I) adsorption capacity of the biosorbents. Removal of highly toxic Cadmium metal ions from water system using the optimal biosorbent named ‘NPFL’ was investigated using a mimic industrial column. The result showed that NPFL could remove Cd(II) in large quantities from aqueous solution with coexisting metal ions. The raw material, NPFL and Cd(II) loaded NPFL were characterized by SEM-EDS. The reusability of NPFL was also studied by batch adsorption-desorption test.

The biosorption of metanil yellow on hen egg membrane from aqueous solution in a batch process was investigated at 29oC with a view to determine the potential of the membrane in removing metanil yellow from aqueous solution.  The effects of contact time, initial biosorbate concentration, biosorbent dosage and initial biosorbate pH were determined. Various isotherm models were used to analyze experimental data. The highest experimental equilibrium biosorption capacity obtained was 129.88 mg/g. The optimum pH was 3. Adsorption capacity increased with increase in initial solution concentration but decreased with increase in time. The isotherm models applied were good fits based on correlation coefficients. Flory-Huggins isotherm was the best fit (R2 0.986). The biosorption was endothermic, good, physisorptive and spontaneous. This work shows that hen egg membrane is a potential biosorbent for the removal of metanil yellow from aqueous solution.

Three-dimensional water evaporation is proposed based on highly vertically ordered pillar array of graphene-assembled framework (HOPGF). A high evaporation rate of 2.10 kg m−2 h−1 is achieved (1 sun). This efficient SSG system has been applied to wastewater purification, solar water heater and housing self-supply water system.
