: The use of natural and environment friendly energy sources for betterment of the living society has become an active concern in both government and public sector. Due to this, responsible use of global resources has become a growing concern among people. Similarly, in chemical industry especially in pharmaceutical fields, there is constant pressure in reducing hazardous organic solvents and environmentally detrimental laboratory materials. The use of ionic liquids in efficient synthesis of a wide array of fundamentally important structural motifs has gained tremendous importance in the scientific era. In this review, synthesis of two such medicinally relevant moieties, namely, triazole and pyrazole, in green and sustainable ionic liquid have been discussed.

Indoles are efficiently condensed with aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes in the absence of any catalyst in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide {bmim]Br} under microwave irradiation to afford bis(indolyl)methanes in good to excellent yields and in short reaction times.

An easily accessible ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]) was synthesized, and characterized using 1H and 13C NMR, and MS. The ionic liquid was demonstrated to be an efficient green solvent for the synthesis of pravadoline, one of non-steroidal drugs. High yield was achieved without the presence of an anhydrous Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction was also successfully carried out using other imidazolium-based ionic liquids, including 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([HMIM][PF6]), and 1-octyl-3- methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([OMIM][PF6]). To our best knowledge, this is the first report in Viet Nam on the synthesis of a pharmaceutical chemical in ionic liquids as green solvents.

Transesterification were carried out under microwave irradiation conditions and the effects of imidazolium hydroxide with different branched alkyl side-chains ([Cnmim]OH, n = 2, 3, 4) were investigated. The results showed that less than conventional amount of NaOH, and the alkaline ionic liquids formed clearly biphasic systems immediately after the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol was finished. The method offers significant improvement over conventional techniques in terms of operational simplicity, processing time reduction and excellent yields. Among the imidazolium salts studied, [C2mim]OH proved to be the most efficient catalyst, affording 96 % yield.

Subscript textCO2 emission control is an important issue, in which chemical absorption process has reached the widest application. Ionic liquid is a kind of green solvent and expected to take the place of traditional amine absorbents as for its better characteristics. In this paper, two iminazole base ionic liquids were synthesized, including of bromide 1-butyl-3-methylimidazo ([bmim]Br) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim]PF6). The performance of CO2 absorption by [bmim]PF6 and [bmim]Br were compared under the same other conditions. Subscript textIt indicates that [bmim]PF6 has more absorption capacity and less saturated absorption time under low temperature, which provides reference for CO2 control by ionic liquid.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been known as a class of green solvent and played an important role in green chemistry in recently years. Materials based on ILs, such as poly(ionic liquid) and polymer/ILs composites, are also widely investigated and possess many unique properties and applications. In this chapter, green solvent IL is reviewed and the responsive behavior of ILs based materials to external stimulus, like ultrasound (US), is introduced. Especially, it is described that FT-IR spectroscopy was effective for analyzing hydrogen bonding in ILs, polymeric ILs and PVA/IL composites. In addition, shear viscosity and viscoelasticity measurement and techniques of two-dimensional correlation and deconvolution are applied to analyze the change of interaction between IL to different substances and US responded behavior.
