A facile preparation of magnetic MOF composites with flexible mercapto group pendants in their pores is realized through solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) under mild conditions in water, and terephthalate in UIO-66 is replaced with mercaptoacetic acid (MAA).

AbstractHeterometallic carboxylate complexes are of paramount interest in pure and applied coordination chemistry. Despite that plurality of such type compounds have been published to date, synthetic aspects of their chemistry often remain in the shadow of intriguing physical properties manifesting by these species. Present review summarizes reliable data on direct synthesis of low nuclearity molecular compounds as well as coordination polymers on their base with carboxylate-bridged {M2Mg} (M = Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+), {M2Li2} (M = Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, VO2+), {M2Ln2} and {M2Ln} (M = Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+) metal cores. Structural features and stabilization factors are considered and principal outcomes are confirmed by quantum-chemical calculations. Particular attention is paid to consideration of ligand-exchange reactions that allow controllable modification of heterometallic metal core under mild conditions giving diverse molecular complexes with modified ligand environment or Metal-Organic Frameworks with permanent porosity.

The pompon-like microspheres of AgIn5S8 with a cubic phase were prepared in a low temperature aqueous solution using mercaptoacetic acid as capping agent and thioacetamide as sulfur source and characterized with XRD, UV-vis absorption spectra, SEM and BET analysis. It is interesting that the microspheres are quite open and puffy. More importantly, the obtained microspheres showed remarkable photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation, which is probably due to the pompon-like morphology for providing reactive sites and facilitating the charge transfer between the target pollutant and the photocatalyst. This method could be extended to the synthesis of other functional micro/nano materials.

Novel (arene)titanium(II) haloaluminate complexes (η6-arene)Ti[(μ-X)2AlX2]2 (X = Cl, Br) were obtained from (η6-benzene)Ti[(μ-X)2AlX2]2 (X = Cl, Br) complexes by ligand exchange reactions with bis(pentamethylphenyl)methane and dimesitylmethane. The [η6-1,2,3,4,5- pentamethyl-6-(2,3,4,5,6-pentamethylbenzyl)benzene]Ti[(μ-X)2AlX2]2 (X = Cl, Br) and [η6-1,3,5- trimethyl-2-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl)benzene]Ti[(μ-Br)2AlBr2]2 complexes containing titanium coordinated to only one of the two phenyl rings were obtained and their crystal structures were determined. (η6-Benzene)Ti[(μ-Cl)2AlCl2]2 and dimesitylmethane afforded the (η6-mesi- tylene)Ti[(μ-Cl)2AlCl2]2 complex which is isotypic with the known bromo analogue. This product shows that Friedel-Crafts scission of aryl-alkyl bonds occurs in such systems even under mild conditions.

A facile preparation of 3-hydroxy propanenitrile derivatives is described involving ring opening of epoxides with potassium cyanide in glycol solvents in the presence of Schiff base complexes as catalysts. This method occurs under neutral and mild conditions with high yields and high regioselectivity. Thus, several β-Hydroxy nitriles, useful intermediates toward biologically-active molecules, are easily obtained at room temperature.Key words: β-hydroxy nitrile, Schiff base, epoxide, glycol, catalyst.

The reaction of 1-trifluoromethyl-3-(1′-pyreno)-1,3-propanedione with lanthanum(III) trichloride in the presence of pyridine leads to halide ligand exchange, yielding a novel pyridinium tetrakis{1-trifluoromethyl-3-(1′-pyreno)-1,3-propanedionato}lanthanate(III) complex with four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon moieties. This reaction easily proceeds under mild conditions (25°C, 24 h) producing the complex in a 90% isolated yield. The complex was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and positive fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, and its precise structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray analysis demonstrated that the four pyrene moieties were independently oriented.

A γ-MgH2/β-MgH2 nanocomposite can be synthesized via a simple wet chemical route with THF, releasing 6.6 wt% H2 with rapid kinetics; initial hydrogen release arises either directly from meta-stable γ-MgH2 or immediately following its transformation into β-MgH2.
