Highly crystalline titania nano-particles were synthesized by hydrothermal method using novel stable water-soluble titanium complexes. It was confirmed that single phase anatase, rutile and brookite, which can be rarely synthesized as a single phase, can be obtained by varying the ligand in the complex and pH of the aqueous solution. TEM observations and BET specific surface area measurements had shown that these samples consisted of nanosized particles of 5~200 nm and had high specific surface areas of 25~150 m2/g. According to UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra, these titania samples absorbed light in the visible region (λ > 400 nm). Photocatalytic activities in NO oxidation reaction exhibited by synthesized titania powders under the irradiation by UV- visible light were higher than the activity of the commercial TiO2 photocatalyst P25 (Degussa). Especially, under illumination by only visible light of above 510 nm wavelength, photocatalytic activity of the obtained specimens exceeded that of P25 more than four times. We also clearly demonstrated that single phase brookite had high photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation.

ABSTRACTA fundamental study of the Li insertion behavior of a series of materials consisting of a TiO2 core having MoO3 on the surface has been carried out in order to determine the influence of the shell. These TiO2-(MoO3)z materials, where (z) denotes the fraction of coverage from a partial to a double layer, range in diameter from 40-100 Å. Calculations have been done on their theoretical lithium capacity using a maximum of Li0.5TiO2 for the core, and Li1.5MoO3 at the TiO2/MoO3 interface, and they have been compared to that found experimentally. The reversible Li-insertion capacity was shown to increase from 0.34 per Ti for the pure TiO2 sample, to 0.91 Li per transition metal when the MoO3 coverage increased to one monolayer. There was only one plateau observed in the electrochemical scans for the samples showing that they function as a single-phase material making them interesting for electrodes. The redox voltage of the TiO2/Li0.5TiO2 biphasic transformation increased 60 mV from the pure TiO2 to the sample containing one monolayer of MoO3. This effect was interpreted as due to a change in TiO2 surface charge coming from an inductive effect of Ti-O-Mo bonds.

Unique BiVO4/Bi2S3 cruciate hollow heterostructures are successfully constructed via anion exchange reactions using cruciate BiVO4 as templates and precursors. The hollow heterostructures exhibit excellent enhanced photocurrent response and photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr6+ under visible-light illumination.

Ferrites have been predicted to be potential material for photo catalytic and photo electrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation under visible light photons. The article briefly reviews, as well as compares the supremacy of ferrites over titanates and sulfides with respect to their photo-electro catalytic hydrogen producing ability. It shows that though the band energetic of a material plays a vital role to induce the photo-splitting of water; but its optical structure, at the first instance is very important to utilize it to absorb the visible light photons. Among all the PEC materials, the low-band gap ferrites (Fe-d orbital) favor absorption of visible light photons; at the same time offer an advantage of being an eco-friendly material system. A specific focus is given to the single phase, nanostructure and composite forms of typical ZnFe2O4system. Though a concise report, but also throws light on the importance and tunability of PEC properties.

AbstractThe preparation and the alloy structure of Nb - Al samples containing σ.-phase are described. Using single-phase material it is shown that the o-phase Nb - Al, independent of composition and heat treatment, is not superconducting down to 1.3 K.
