This study investigates four characteristic damage mechanisms of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, with fatigue crack propagation in aluminum alloy. The multipeak wavelength distinguish algorithm was developed for FBG spectrum quantitative analysis. The results distinguish a subordinate peak skewing significantly, associated with strain patterns along the FBG, corresponding to various crack lengths. For parallel bonded direction grating, the subordinate peak skewing appears at the strain pattern transition region. This is located at the ratio 32%-34% of crack length lying in the crack tip. Meanwhile, the four damage characteristics correspond to subordinate peak skewing. When the strain is distributed along the grating, spectral distortion occurs. In this region, the cubic strain pattern determines the shorter wavelength location of subordinate peaks. This corresponds to the 15%-17% ratio of crack length lying in the grating, causing spectral oscillations.

Building a gradient structure inside the Mg alloy structure can be expected to greatly improve its comprehensive mechanical properties. In this study, AZ31/Mg–Sc laminated composites with gradient grain structure were prepared by hot extrusion. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg–1Sc alloy with different extrusion temperatures and surface AZ31 fine-grain layers were investigated. The alloy has a more obvious gradient microstructure when extruded at 350 °C. The nanoscale hardness value of Mg–1Sc alloy was improved through fine-grain strengthening and solution strengthening of the surface AZ31 fine-grain layer. The strength of Mg–1Sc alloy was improved due to the fine-grain strengthening and dislocation strengthening of the surface AZ31 fine-grain layer, and the elongation of Mg–1Sc alloy was increased by improving the distribution of the microstructure.

A study of the structure of titanium alloy VT41 (Ti–Al–Si–Zr–Sn– β-stabilizers) was carried out on a sample subjected to hot upsetting in the (α+β)-region – conditions simulating the stamping of a disk of a gas turbine engine (GTE). The features of the formation of the textural state of primary and secondary globular grains, as well as the kinetics of their dissolution with an increase in the annealing temperature, have been determined. As a result of heat treatment at 995°C, the homogeneity of the alloy structure significantly increases comparing to the deformed state, which is associated with the recrystallization of lamellar and small-globular grains and the retention of primary globular grains of the α-phase. The sequence of structural changes has been established during the annealing within the temperature range from 950 to 1040°C.

This paper consists of the fabrication and investigation of metal membranes and the study of their behaviour and applications in gas separation processes. The scope is to produce and characterize the porous crystal structure of brass alloy (standardization: DIN 17660) membranes and measure their permeability with helium as a penetrant medium. Another part of this study is to alter the brass alloy’s structure throughout metallurgical treatments and investigate how the permeability is allied to the structure’s alteration. This work merges the knowledge and technology of inorganic porous materials science in metallurgy. The novelty of the current research resides in the process to alternate the brass alloy structure throughout metallurgical treatments and how it is allied to the permeability of the membrane, which is of interest to be investigated. The results of the research are analysed and compared conducting the final inferences. All metallurgical treatments resulted in low permeability values when compared to a non-treated specimen. Specifically, the drop in permeance ranged from 76 up to 99.56%. It is noted that consecutive treatments contributed to even further decreases.

The refractory HEAs block material was prepared by powder sintering, using an equal atomic proportion of mixed TiZrNbMoV and NbTiAlTaV metal powder raw materials. The phase was analyzed, using an XRD. The microstructure of the specimen was observed, employing a scanning electron microscope, and the compressive strength of the specimen was measured, using an electronic universal testing machine. The results showed that the bulk cubic alloy structure was obtained by sintering at 1300 °C and 30 MPa for 4 h, and a small amount of complex metal compounds were contained. According to the pore distribution, the formed microstructure can be divided into dense and porous zones. At a compression rate of 10−4s−1, the yield strengths of TiZrNbMoV and NbTiAlTaV alloys are 1201 and 700 MPa, respectively.

The Al-Mg alloy structure reinforced with carbon nanotubes was evaluated after the composites production through a modified flake metallurgy technique followed by hot extrusion. The obtained bimodal microstructure of the matrix allowed to identify the microstructural mechanisms leading to high strength; uniform elongation and strain hardening ability of the produced composites. The presence of Mg transformed the native Al2O3 layer into spinel MgAl2O4 nano-phases dispersed both inside CG and UFGs and on the interfaces, improving the interfacial bonding of Al-Al as well as Al-CNT. The effect of the reinforcing phases percentages on the dislocations mechanisms evolution was evaluated through stress relaxation tests leading to the underlying of the effect of reinforcing phases on the modification of the interphase influence zone
