ABSTRACTIn the present paper three mechanisms of self-polarization of ferroelectric crystals are discussed: polarization by the crystal bending, that by the “organized” Phase transition and that by the internal field. It is shown that these mechanisms operate also in the case of films. However, the using of cathode sputtering leads to the appearance of two new mechanisms: polarization by the field biasing the substrate with respect to the gas discharge at the film deposition temperature Ts below the Curie point temperature Tc (Ts < TO; and polarization by the field captured by the traps of the negative charge having no time to relax for the time of cooling the film to Tc (Ts > Tc).

An experimental method is suggested for the determination of the rate of magnetic phase transitions. The method is based on the measurement of the change of magnetic susceptibility of a ferromagnetic sample in the vicinity of the phase transition in response to an abrupt change of the sample temperature. This paper describes the measurement of the change of the magnetic susceptibility of a thin gadolinium plates, cooled by water-flow at a temperature below the Curie point (TC=292 K). It was found that the relaxation time of the magnetic susceptibility of gadolinium in the temperature range from 289.9 to 291.3 K can be approximated using the Landau-Khalatnikov equation with a kinetic coefficient value γ = 3.9×10-8cm3/(erg×s). The linear approximation does not fit well in the range from 291.3 to 293.2 K. The fundamental restriction of specific power of the magnetocaloric refrigerator (made by gadolinium plates) was estimated.

AbstractAn overview of the equations of state (EOS) with a short summary of shock wave experiments with laser induced impact flyer, relevant to EOS study, is presented. The “old-new” ellipsometry is suggested and described for the EOS research. The detection of phase transitions of the first kind (solid-solid) as well as phase transition of the second kind (Curie point as an example) is demonstrated. Furthermore, the temperature measurements are not possible without the knowledge of the emissivity, a parameter that can be measured by using ellipsometry techniques.

The paper shows the effect of homogenization annealing on the ferromagnet-paramagnet phase transition in the GdNi2 alloy. In the cast sample, at the Curie point, a temperature hysteresis is observed, which in an external magnetic field of 13.5 T can be at least 3 degrees. The data of scanning electron microscopy of the electropolished samples showed a decrease in the impurity phase of GdNi and practically no temperature hysteresis of the phase transition in the annealed GdNi2 sample. The value of the isothermal change entropy DSm = - 18.931 J/(kg*K) for an annealed sample of the GdNi2 alloy at the Curie point of 75 K in a magnetic field of 13.5 T.

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of barium titanate ceramics with hydrothermal synthesized nano-sized starting powders was investigated. The Curie point and latent heat of the phase transition were characterized by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The P-E hysteresis loops were measured in the temperature range from 30-160oC and ECE adiabatic temperature change was obtained according to the Maxwell relation. A double hysteresis loop is observed at the temperature slightly above the Curie point, which indicates a good consistency of phase transition similar to single crystal. It is also proved by the sharp endothermic peak of phase transition in DSC curves. It exhibits a high ECE of ΔTmax=1.3K under a low applied field of 10kV/cm, which is much higher than that of the sample using micron-sized starting powders.
