Difference in Standard Scores of Adults on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (Revised and Third Edition)

Differences in the standard scores for the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R; L. M. Dunn & L. M. Dunn, 1981) and the PPVT-Third Edition (PPVT-III; Dunn & Dunn, 1997b) are known to exist for children, with typically higher scores occurring on the PPVT-III. However, these tests are administered into adulthood as well, and score equivalence must be evaluated for this age range. Analysis of data from the PPVT-R and PPVT-III tests from 76 adult participants revealed significant score differences. Participants with poor language skills scored significantly higher on the PPVT-III than on the PPVT-R. The control group showed no significant difference between the PPVT-R and PPVT-III scores. The results suggest that the two tests should not be considered interchangeable.

Receptive language is importance to facilitate the acquisition of language skills. Measuring receptive language skills is crucial, especially for children with language limitations, such as children with Down Syndrome (DS). This study aims to examine the construct validity of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Fourth Edition (PPVT-4) in children with DS. The research respondents consisted of 98 children with DS who are members of Persatuan Orang Tua Anak dengan Down Syndrome (POTADS) in the Jakarta, Bandung and Padang. Data were collected individually and administered by a psychologist. Data were analyzed using confimatory factor analysis (CFA). The results show that the one-factor model for set-1 to set-10 fit with the data and all items were valid, except for item 106. The implication is the PPVT-4 can be used to measure receptive language abilities of children with DS and estimate of the age equivalent of receptive language abilities.

It has been our experience in using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test that an inordinate number of verbs are missed by mentally retarded individuals. This study attempts to determine whether verb errors were due to a lack of word comprehension or a failure to understand what was being requested by the morphological-syntactic form of the stimulus. Twenty-eight subjects residing in a state facility for the mentally retarded were given a standard version and a modified version of the PPVT. On the modified version of the test, the stimulus "verbing" was altered to incorporate a syntactic helper, forming the stimulus "somebody verbing." As a result, there was a mean reduction of verb error by almost 50%.

The contribution of individual differences in physiological arousal to intellective assessment in learning disabled children was studied. Arousal was measured by salivary response and intellective function (receptive vocabulary) by the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. It was predicted that best performance would be found at intermediate levels of arousal. Peabody scores of learning disabled subjects of high, middle, and low arousal showed a non-significant trend in the predicted direction. Reasons for the lack of significance of this hypothesized trend were proposed and needed research outlined.

Comparisons of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test—Revised and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Revised were made with 104 children diagnosed as learning disabled and mentally retarded. Significant but modest correlations were found between all but one of the WISC—R scaled scores (i.e., Coding) and PPVT—R standard scores, and between WISC—R IQs and PPVT—R standard scores. Significant differences were found among mean Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs and mean PPVT—R standard scores. The PPVT—R standard scores underestimated WISC—R Verbal IQs by 7 points, WISC—R Performance IQs by 17 points, and WISC—R Full Scale IQs by 11 points.

Objectives: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is very common and is one of the most common causes for patients to be admitted to urology, pediatrics, child psychiatry and child surgery departments. We aimed to investigate the effect on depression and self-esteem of this disorder that can cause problems on person's social development and human relations. Material and methods: 90 patients who were admitted to our clinic with complaints of nocturnal enuresis were enrolled. Investigations to rule out organic causes were performed in this group of patients. Out of them 38 children and adolescents (age range 8-18 years) with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) agreed to participate in the study In the same period 46 healthy children and adolescents with a similar age range without bed wetting complaint were included in the study as a control group. The age of the family, educational and socioeconomic level were questioned and Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSCS) and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) forms were filled out. Results: Mean age of the cases (18 females or 47.4% and 20 males or 52.6%) was 10.76 ± 3.82 years whereas mean age of controls (26 females or 56.5% and 20 males or 43.5%) was 10.89 ± 3.11 years. Depression scale was significantly higher (p = 0.001) in the case group than in the control group (10.42 ± 4.31 vs 7.09 ± 4.35). In both groups there was no statistically significant difference by age and sex in terms of depression scale (p > 0.05). Conclusion: NE is widely seen as in the community and is a source of stresses either for children and for their families. When patients were admitted to physicians for treatment, a multidisciplinary approach should be offered and the necessary psychological support should be provided jointly by child psychiatrists and psychologists.

To determine the equivalence and relationship of Peabody and WISC scores in a retarded population, 49 students in a class for the educable retarded were tested. The Peabody IQ consistently over-estimated WISC Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs. Intercorrelations between IQs from the two tests were disappointingly low. A more cautious approach to use of the Peabody as a “substitute” measure for the WISC is suggested.
