The existing structures of the steel sinking headgear and permanent headframe do not meet the requirements of resource saving (metal consumption and manpower input at installation), and the present methods of the headframe designing do not fully reflect recent possibilities of applying of the advanced information technologies. Technical level of the modern software makes it possible for designers to set up multiple numerical experiments to create a computer simulation that allows solving the problem without field and laboratory experiments, and therefore without special costs. In this regard, a mathematical simulation has been developed and based on it, software to select cross-sections of multi- purpose steel headframe elements and to calculate proper weight of its metal structures depending on the characteristics and hoisting equipment. A headframe drawing is displayed, as the results of the software work, including list of elements, obtained optimal hoisting equipment in accordance with the initial data. The software allows speeding up graphic work and reducing manpower input on calculations and paper work. The software allows developing a three-dimensional image of the structure and its functional blocks, based on the obtained initial parameters, as well as developing control software for units with numerical control (NC) in order to manufacture multi-purpose headframes.

This paper proposes the construction of an energy envelope that can be used to advantage with the energy barrier method to analyse the natural resting aspect of engineering parts destined for automatic assembly. Unlike the energy barrier method, the energy envelope does not require any visualization of the projection of the energy barrier on the aspect of interest. The energy envelope is the three-dimensional topology of the changes in height of the centroid, as the part attempts changes of aspect. The paper describes how it may be computed in a CAD (computer aided design) solid modeller. The results of applying the energy envelope to prisms of square and cylindrical cross-sections are the same as those predicted by the energy barrier method. When extended to the analysis of a rectangular prism, the results were consistent with Boothroyd's dynamic solution and Boothroyd's experimental data. This conclusion is encouraging as there is no irrefutable evidence that the energy barrier method may be applied to the analysis of the rectangular prism.

This article presents architecture of integrated intelligent computer-aided design system for designing mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms (IICADkmps). The system has been developed in C# program environment with the aim of automatising the design process. This article presents a modern, automated approach to design. Developed kmps modules for calculation of geometrical and design characteristics of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms are described. Three-dimensional geometrical parameter modelling of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms was performed in the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-aided engineering system CATIA V5. The connection between kmps calculation modules and CATIA V5 modelling system was established through initial three-dimensional models – templates. The outputs from the developed IICADkmps system generated final three-dimensional virtual models of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms. Testing of the developed IICADkmps system was performed on friction, belt, cogged (spur and bevel gears) and chain transmitting mechanisms. Also, connection of the developed IICADkmps system with a device for rapid prototyping and computer numerical control machines was made for the purpose of additional testing and verification of practical use. Physical prototypes of designed characteristic elements of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms were manufactured. The selected test three-dimensional virtual prototypes, obtained as an output from the developed IICADkmps system, were manufactured on the device for rapid prototyping (three-dimensional colour printer Spectrum Z510) and computer numerical control machines. Finally, at the end of the article, conclusions and suggested possible directions of further research, based on theoretical and practical research results, are presented.

Reverse engineering proceeds in the reverse of conventional manufacturing order, based on the pull system instead of the traditional push system. This paper is concerned with applying the reverse engineering concept to the development of parts. With this procedure the development of parts involves an iterative reverse process from the scanning of a developmental prototype towards the design model. The focus is on the use of two set-ups of network in providing computerized data of the prototype that are exchangeable among Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems. The first set-up applies a direct approach to manipulate the scanned data in the CAM environment for generating Numerical Control (NC) programs used for machining the workpiece. The second set-up applies an indirect approach to manipulate the scanned data in a CAD environment prior to generating the NC programs. The major benefits gained from the reverse engineering application in the development of parts are also described.

Severe damage and bone loss of the talus are problematic issues because of its unique shape, function, and characteristics. This present study’s objective is to propose the process of customized total talar prosthesis manufacturing, using three-dimensional (3D) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) production along with evaluation of the results of total talar prosthesis replacement with or without ankle ligament reconstruction in patients with severe conditions of talus. The case series included five patients (mean age: 27.6 years) with severe talar loss or damage. The mean follow-up time was 17.8±8.4 months. Related complications were: i) mild subsidence in 1 patient (20%) and ii) periprosthetic fracture in another patient (20%). The mean clinical scores including VAS-FA and SF-36 were improved following surgeries. Customized total talar prosthesis appears to provide satisfactory outcomes for the treatment of severe talar loss or damage at a short-term follow-up.

Purpose The use of removable complete dentures is a selectable restorative procedure for edentulous patients. To improve the fabrication quality and efficiency of removable complete dentures, this paper aims to introduce a new method to fabricate customized wax complete dentures with additive manufacturing. This process uses complementary digital technologies, and allows faster and better manufacture of complete dentures. Design/methodology/approach In the study, a dental scanner was used to obtain surface data from edentulous casts and rims made by the dentist. A parameterized three-dimensional graphic database of artificial teeth was pre-established. Specialized computer-aided design software was used to set up the artificial dentition and design the esthetic gingiva and base plate. A selective laser sintering machine was used to transfer the data from stereolithography files into a wax base plate with location holes for each artificial tooth. Findings Under this method, a set of wax base plates with 28 location holes available for the placement of the artificial teeth were designed and fabricated within 6 h. The try-in wax dentures fitted the patient’s mouth well, besides occlusion relationships. Then, the occlusion relationships can be adjusted manually to achieve a balanced centric occlusion. Originality/value This method can be used to design and fabricate wax try-in removable complete dentures semi-automatically and rapidly; however, the algorithm for the occlusion contact design needs to be improved.

Several procedures have been proposed to achieve maxillary ridge augmentation. These require bone replacement materials to be manually cut, shaped, and formed at the time of implantation, resulting in an expensive and time-consuming process. In the present study, we describe a technique for the design and fabrication of custom-made scaffolds for maxillary ridge augmentation, using three-dimensional computerized tomography (3D CT) and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). CT images of the atrophic maxillary ridge of 10 patients were acquired and modified into 3D reconstruction models. These models were transferred as stereolithographic files to a CAD program, where a virtual 3D reconstruction of the alveolar ridge was generated, producing anatomically shaped, custom-made scaffolds. CAM software generated a set of tool-paths for manufacture by a computer-numerical-control milling machine into the exact shape of the reconstruction, starting from porous hydroxyapatite blocks. The custom-made scaffolds were of satisfactory size, shape, and appearance; they matched the defect area, suited the surgeon's requirements, and were easily implanted during surgery. This helped reduce the time for surgery and contributed to the good healing of the defects.

Metal sheets have the ability to be formed into nonstandard sizes and sections. Displacement-controlled computer numerical control press brakes are used for three-dimensional sheet metal forming. Although the subject of vendor neutral computer-aided technologies (computer-aided design, computer-aided process planning and computer-aided manufacturing) is widely researched for machined parts, research in the field of sheet metal parts is very sparse. Blank development from three-dimensional computer-aided design model depends on the bending tools geometry and metal sheet properties. Furthermore, generation and propagation of bending errors depend on individual bend sequences. Bend sequence planning is carried out to minimize bending errors, keeping in view the available tooling geometry and the sheet material properties’ variation. Research reported in this article attempts to develop a STEP-compliant, vendor neutral design and manufacturing framework for discrete sheet metal bend parts to provide a capability of bidirectional communication between design and manufacturing cycles. Proposed framework will facilitate the use of design information downstream at the manufacturing stage in the form of bending workplan, bending workingsteps and a feedback mechanism to the upstage product designer. In order to realize this vendor neutral framework, STEP (ISO 10303), AP203, AP207, and AP219 along with STEP-NC (ISO14649) have been used to provide a basis of vendor neutral data modeling.

The characteristics of high-order deformed elliptical gear is analyzed. The parameters of high-order deformed elliptical gear are chosen and calculated. The modeling method of high-order deformed elliptical gear is presented. The shape of pitch curve is determined. The position and orientation of gear teeth are clarified. The three-dimensional solid model of high-order deformed elliptical gear is achieved. The method and the result facilitate finite element analysis and numerical control machining simulation of high-order deformed elliptical gear.
