Geopolitical conditions continue to exert a significant influence on the state and development of the Russian economy, along with macro and microeconomic factors. In this regard, the protracted crisis period makes companies of certain industries and regions more and more dependent on external and internal conditions. The article discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of the formation of the structure of the monetary capital of companies in the metallurgical industry under the influence of external and internal factors that form a number of financial risks. The study allows us to understand the nature of the influence of financial risks on the cost of capital of companies in the metallurgical industry of the economy. The article presents a comparative characteristic of the indicators of non-ferrous metallurgy companies, their financial stability, as well as the capital structure. This research will be useful for specialists and managers of specialized companies. The article deals with current issues of digital transformation of metallurgical companies in the conditions of sustainable development of industry 4.0. The authors systematize the tools of through digitalization of companies in the metallurgical industry, give their characteristics, as well as proposed a mechanism for the impact of digital tools on the capital structure and financial stability. At the same time the analysis of the capital of the leading metallurgical company of Russia and the world JSC “Uralelectromed” confirms the necessity to consider the formation of the capital structure by digital methods of management in the aspect of sus-tainable development.

Вопрос о влиянии собственности государства в крупных российских компаниях на их структуру капитала остается открытым и пока не получил окончательного разрешения в литературе. Результаты работ, проведенных для российского рынка, свидетельствуют о значительной роли государственного участия в российских компаниях [5], а также о том, что российские компании с государственным участием имеют значительно более высокие значения долга в структуре капитала, чем частные [34]. В данной публикации для оценки роли государственного участия на структуру капитала российских компаний был проведен эмпирический анализ 139 публичных компаний за 2014-2018 гг. (выборка представлена государственными и частными компаниями), котирующихся на Московской бирже. В рамках проведенного исследования было выявлено, что отечественные публичные государственные компании при прочих равных условиях имеют более высокое значение долга в структуре капитала, чем частные. Кроме этого, компании с государственным участием имеют также более высокие значения коэффициента долгосрочных обязательств в сравнении с частными. Это подтверждает гипотезу о том, что деятельность государственных компаний связана с большими финансовыми рисками, чем частных, особенно в долгосрочной перспективе. В данной ситуации целесообразно ввести политику, направленную на повышение финансовой устойчивости государственных компаний, а именно, осуществлять деятельность по расширению производственных процессов за счет собственных средств и нераспределенной прибыли, а не за счет заемных средств. Также было получено положительное значимое влияние на структуру капитала компаний с государственным участием таких факторов, как размер компании, рентабельность продаж, рентабельность собственного капитала, было выявлено отрицательное влияние таких детерминант, как величина чистых активов, коэффициент оборачиваемости активов, отношение операционных расходов к EBITDA, рентабельность активов. The question of the influence of state ownership in Russian companies on their capital structure remains open for further discussion and the conclusion has not been drawn yet. The results of the work carried out for the Russian market indicate a significant role of state participation in Russian companies [4], as well as the fact that Russian companies with state participation have significantly higher values of debt in the capital structure than private ones [33]. In this publication, to assess the role of state participation in the capital structure of Russian companies, an empirical analysis of 139 public companies for 2014-2018 was carried out. (sample presented by state and private companies) listed on the Moscow Stock Exchange. n this study, it was revealed that domestic public state-owned companies, other things being equal, have a higher value of debt in the capital structure than private ones. In addition, companies with state participation also have higher values of the ratio of long-term liabilities in comparison with private ones. This confirms the hypothesis that the activities of state-owned companies are associated with greater financial risks than private ones, especially in the long term. In this situation, it is reasonable to introduce a policy aimed at increasing the financial stability of state-owned companies, namely, to carry out activities to expand production processes at the expense of their own funds and retained earnings, and not at the expense of borrowed funds. We also obtained a positive significant influence on the capital structure of companies with state participation of such factors as the size of the company, profitability of sales, return on equity, negative influence of such determinants as the value of net assets, the asset turnover ratio, the ratio of operating expenses to EBITDA, return on assets.

This article features a topical research, which is determined by the state of the economic sphere of life of modern Russian society. It focuses on the agricultural economic field of activity represented by agricultural enterprises. In the process of researching issues raised in the article, we have used general and specific scientific research methods, such as observation, analysis and synthesis, deduction and induction. They are what made it possible to identify economic risks that affect the financial stability of economic entities. We have focused on the financial risks of agricultural enterprises. Activities in agriculture are risky, and the growth of agricultural production, financial stability, etc., depends on how subjects overcome economic risks of various types. It is no secret that the growth of agricultural production is largely shaped by export economic operations. Thus, this leads to a drop in domestic consumer demand. Economic risks can lead to financial insolvency of agricultural enterprises. The article focuses on the specifics of the bankruptcy procedure of an agricultural organization. We provide quantitative indicators on declaring a debtor bankrupt by sectors of the economy for 2017 and 2018, including ones for bankruptcies of agricultural enterprises in the Krasnoyarsk region. Using systematic approach, we come to the conclusion about the main problems associated with the financial insolvency of agricultural enterprises.

The article is devoted to the study of methodological and practical approaches to optimizing the capital structure as a tool for managing the value of dairy enterprises. It is established that the most common and suitable for research in the context of optimizing the capital structure are two theories: compromise and the theory of the hierarchy of funding sources. It is argued that compromise models are not designed to accurately determine the optimal capital structure of the enterprise, but allow that the owners from the standpoint of risk is most advantageous to rank sources of funding as follows: retained earnings; debt sources; equity instruments, shares. It is proved that only in the complex use of approaches of foreign theories of capital structure optimization and developments of domestic scientists taking into account the environment of business entities it is possible to develop effective tools for maximizing the market value of the enterprise, minimizing the average market value of capital and risk of financial stability. The calculation of the integrated indicator of financial stability is offered, which allows to determine the level of the financial stability reserve, which allows to take into account the industry specifics and to carry out current monitoring of financial stability at the enterprise. It is substantiated that one of the methods of quantitative assessment of capital structure and substantiation of its optimal structure is the method of capital expenditures. It is argued that the estimated weighted average cost of capital varies in a fairly narrow range, is one of the key factors in the value of business, and achieving a minimum level of such a barrier rate increases the company's ability to make effective investments. It is established that determining the optimal financial structure of capital is one of the most difficult problems of financial management of dairy enterprises. It was found that the management of the formation and use of capital of dairy enterprises is focused on meeting the needs of sources of financing of their economic activities, and to achieve a balanced structure of sources of financing of capital by economic entities is possible only on the basis of optimization criteria. It is proved that the calculation of the weighted average cost of capital based on the capital assets model (CAPM) should be used provided reliable information on intra-industry indicators, in a developed stock market and the turnover of shares in the securities market. Contingent Convertible (CoCo) is a hybrid debt issued by banks with a specific feature forcing its conversion to equity in the event of the bank’s financial distress. CoCo carries two major risks: the risk of default, which threatens any type of debt instrument, plus the exclusive risk of mandatory conversion. In this paper, we propose a model to value CoCo debt instruments as a function of the debt ratio. Although the CoCo is a more expensive instrument than traditional debt, its presence in the capital structure lowers the cost of ordinary debt and reduces the total cost of debt. For preliminary equity holders, the presence of CoCo in the bank’s capital structure increases the shareholder’s aggregate value.

Background: This article seeks to complement the previous literature and clarify the particularities of the capital structure policy of firms with foreign direct investment in Angola.Aim: This article seeks to identify the determinants of the capital structure of Portuguese firms with direct investment in Angola and to understand whether the determinants normally considered by standard finance theory are in line with those used by firms when structuring their capital structure policy to participate in the specific market of Angola.Setting: This article examines 26 large Portuguese firms with investments in Angola using econometric panel data for the period 2006–2010.Methods: The study applied fixed and random effects methods and panel-corrected standard errors that maintain efficiency and unbiased behaviour even in the presence of panel-level heteroscedasticity and contemporaneous correlation of observations among panels.Results: The results provide evidence that the determinants normally considered by standard finance theory are in fact – in terms of sign and coefficient dimension – those used by firms for structuring their capital structure policy when involved in the internationalisation process of entering Angola. Specifically, age, asset structure, return on assets and tangibility have a positive influence on the capital structure of Portuguese firms that have invested in Angola, while non-debt tax shields and liquidity have a negative influence on these companies’ leverage ratios. When comparing our results with studies that have analysed the capital structure determinants of listed Portuguese firms – firms belonging to the PSI 20 Index and large firms in the Portuguese corporate sector – we found similarities in the sign and coefficient dimension of the determinants of capital structure. However, the profitability coefficient sign is in line with the trade-off framework (i.e. profitability is positively related to debt) but not with pecking order theory (i.e. profitability is negatively related to debt).Conclusion: Our results suggest that the high-growth Angolan market is seen by larger Portuguese firms as a low-risk diversification process because of the economic hardship Portugal has gone through, as well as cultural and linguistic similarities to Portugal. As such, the Angolan market is seen as an extension of the Portuguese domestic market that has increased potential. This scenario potentially reduces the firm default probability and the cost of debt. Maintaining the tax shield benefits of debt and decreasing the cost of debt – through a reduction in the default probability – have induced profitable firms to use more debt.

This paper addresses the following question: Are banks special firms that can achieve their goals only with high leverage, above and beyond what is considered acceptable for industrial corporations? This question is related to the issue of the cost of capital and how it is affected by leverage. If we accept the Modigliani–Miller (M&M) theorem (1958), then the capital structure is irrelevant for both the cost of capital and the value of the bank. Specifically, the M&M hypothesis argues that higher levels of equity capital reduce bank leverage and risk, leading to an offsetting decline in banks’ cost of equity capital. Hence, we ask the question whether banks are special firms such that M&M theorem does not apply to banks. We show that M&M propositions cannot be applied for banks primarily because of explicit guarantees and subsidies that provide incentives for increasing leverage. Then, some of the risk faced by the bank is transferred at no cost to the providers of these guarantees and subsidies, giving banks the incentive to increase leverage as much as they can. We show that under perfect market conditions, when risk is fairly priced, this opportunity vanishes.

This paper is devoted to test the MM’s propositions about the relationship between leverage and cost of capital in the context of Nepalese capital markets. The main objective of the study is to determine whether the firms' overall cost of capital and cost of equity decline with the increasing use of leverage. The results showed a negative but insignificant beta value of the relationship between leverage and the overall cost of capital. Therefore the leverage may not be regarded as contributing variable to the cost of capital function for Nepalese firms. But finding contradicts with the traditional approach of the capital structure theories. It is further concluded that the cost of capital declines not only with leverage because of the tax deductibility feature of interest charge. The relationship between the cost of equity and leverage is also strongly negative. Besides leverage, the size, and D-P Ratio are other important variables that affect the cost of capital in Nepalese context.Journal of Nepalese Business Studies 2006/III/1 pp. 85-91
