AbstractThe remedy Ozonum has become the highest-ranking prescription in my practice during the coronavirus pandemic. Respiratory tract illnesses represent a smaller percentage of cases that have responded well to the remedy. Most cases I have seen were predominantly affected by the indirect impact of the pandemic. I have noticed a similar increase in Ozonum prescriptions following former global events, for example, the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on 11th September 2001 in New York, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the 2010 eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano which paralysed flights across Europe and the severe 2017 to 2018 flu season. Ozone is a gas, called 'activated oxygen', formed by three atoms of oxygen instead of the two that we normally breathe. We are familiar with the protective function of the ozone layer in the atmosphere. The life cycle of ozone and its connection to ocean and marine life, to trees, habitat, and life in general, is less commonly known. A dynamic constellation of the homeopathic remedy becomes clear once we understand the ozone life cycle and its ecosystem in its natural and disrupted form. Ozonum—the homeopathic remedy—was used by our forefathers but has almost been forgotten until Anne Schadde's proving in nineties of the last century. Ozonum as a remedy has a wide range of applications such as pandemics, mass casualties and disasters, as well as routine clinical uses. Within different levels of context, the main feeling of Ozonum dynamic is exemplified by the statement—'I can't breathe!' It may be considered a 'polychrest' of our time evidently resonating with contemporary climatic, medical, socio-political and economic global challenges. We need to adopt a global view to keep up with the times and perceive a link between individual and global health in a broader perspective.

On the morning of October 10, 2003, the residents of New York awoke to find that an entire page of their beloved paper, The Times, had been usurped for the sole purpose of flagrant self-promotion and protestation. On his own behalf, Dr. Raymand Damadian had purchased a one page spread bemoaning his exclusion in the Nobel Prize for Medicine that year which had previously been awarded to Paul Laterbur and Peter Mansfield for their contributions to the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Over the course of the next few months, the public was to witness a series of such articles proclaiming that a shameful wrong had been committed, and that the truth would eventually prove Dr. Damadian’s accusations. That truth lay in the early theoretical and technical foundations that led to the discovery of MRI. Described just after the Second World War, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was hailed as a breakthrough in physical chemistry for which Felix Bloch and Edward Purcell were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1952. Two decades later, in 1971, Dr. Damadian discovered that differences between the NMR signals of cancerous and normal tissue might provide a rapid means of cancer detection. However, Laterbur and Mansfield were the first to actually demonstrate images of live tissue using the application of magnetic gradients – the key to modern MRI. Though speculation exists that Dr. Damadian may have been excluded from the prize due to his religious beliefs or political rivalry, only time will reveal the whole truth when the Nobel files are opened 50 years hence. The Practice of the Self situates the work of American poet Charles Olson (1910–70) at the centre of the early postwar American avant-garde. It shows Olson to have been one of the major advocates and theorists of American modernism in the late 1940s and early 1950s; a poet who responded fully and variously to the political, ethical, and aesthetic urgencies driving innovation across contemporary American art. Reading Olson’s work alongside that of contemporaries associated with the New York Schools of painting and music (as well as the exiled Frankfurt School), the book draws on Olson’s published and unpublished writings to establish an original account of early postwar American modernism. The development of Olson’s work is seen to illustrate two primary drivers of formal innovation in the period: the evolution of a new model of political action pivoting around the radical individual and, relatedly, a powerful new critique of instrumental reason and the Enlightenment tradition. Drawing on extensive archival research and featuring readings of a wide range of artists—including, prominently, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Wolfgang Paalen, and John Cage—The Practice of the Self offers a new reading of a major American poet and an original account of the emergence of postwar American modernism.

The New York Times “streamlined” its editing process in 2017 and reduced the editing staff by nearly half. Through content analysis on corrections (N = 1,149), this research examines the effects of these cuts. Analysis revealed the Times published more corrections before the changes, but that corrections appeared more quickly after the original error occurred and there were more corrections for content in the A section following the staffing cuts. The A section includes national and international news and thus often contains political content, which is rife for heightened scrutiny in an age of media distrust. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

Urban greening provides a wide range of ecosystem services to address the main challenges of urban areas, e.g., carbon sequestration, evapotranspiration and shade, thermal insulation, and pollution control. This study evaluates the environmental sustainability of a vertical greening system (VGS) built in 2014 in Italy, for which extensive monitoring activities were implemented. The life-cycle assessment methodology was applied to quantify the water–energy–climate nexus of the VGS for 1 m2 of the building’s wall surface. Six different scenarios were modelled according to three different end-of-life scenarios and two different useful lifetime scenarios (10 and 25 years). The environmental impact of global-warming potential and generated energy consumption during the use phase in the VGS scenarios were reduced by 56% in relation to the baseline scenario (wall without VGS), and showed improved environmental performance throughout the complete life cycle. However, the water-scarcity index (WSI) of the VGS scenarios increased by 42%. This study confirms that the installation of VGSs offers a relevant environmental benefit in terms of greenhouse-gas emissions and energy consumption; however, increased water consumption in the use phase may limit the large-scale application of VGSs.

Acanthacephala is a phylum of parasitic pseudocoelamates that infect a wide range of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts and can cause zoonotic infections in humans. The zoologic literature is quite rich and diverse, however the human-centric literature is sparse and sporadically reported over the past 70 years. Causal agents of acanthacephaliasis in humans are reviewed as well as their biology and life cycle. This review provides the first consolidated and summarized report of human cases of acanthacephaliasis based on English language publications, including epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment, and diagnosis and identification.

Background: Senescence marker protein 30 (SMP30) was originally identified as an aging marker protein in the rat liver. The expression of SMP30 decreases with aging androgen-independently. Doxorubicin (DOX) has been used as a potent anticancer agent, but serious cardiotoxicity precludes its use in a wide range of patients. SMP30 may have anti-oxidative and anti-apoptosis functions in several organs, but functional role of SMP30 has not been rigorously examined in the heart. We hypothesized that SMP30 has cardio-protective function by anti-aging and anti-oxidant effects on DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction. Method and Results: Male SMP30 knockout (SMP30KO) and age-matched littermate male wild-type (WT) mice at 12-14 weeks of age were given intraperitoneal injections of DOX (20 mg/kg) or saline. Seven days after DOX injection, echocardiography revealed that left ventricular ejection fraction in DOX-treated SMP30KO mice was more severely reduced than in DOX-treated WT mice (40.9 ± 3.1% vs. 46.9 ± 4.9%, P<0.01). Morphological examination of myocardial sections showed fibrotic change in DOX-treated SMP30KO mice significantly increased compared to DOX-treated WT mice (3.2 ± 0.5% vs. 1.3 ± 0.2%, P<0.01). Generation of reactive oxygen species assessed by dihydroethidium staining was greater in DOX-treated SMP30KO mice than DOX-treated WT mice (166.9 ± 8.6% vs. 131.6 ± 5.8%, P<0.01). Moreover, apoptotic signaling pathways such as caspase-3 activity (1.8 ± 0.1% vs. 1.1 ± 0.2%, P<0.01), bax/bcl-2 ratio (2.4 ± 0.3% vs.1.6 ± 0.2%, P<0.05) and phosphorylation activity of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (1.6 ± 0.3 vs. 1.0 ± 0.1, P<0.05) were significantly elevated in the SMP30KO mice compared with WT mice after DOX injection. The numbers of TUNEL-positive nuclei in the myocardium were higher in DOX-treated SMPKO mice than in DOX-treated WT mice (0.15 ± 0.02% vs. 0.08 ± 0.01%, P<0.01). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that DOX-induced cardiotoxicity is aggravated in SMP30KO mice by exacerbating of superoxide generation, leading to enhanced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. SMP30 has a cardio-protective role by anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative effects in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

While the Times carries about 500 photographs and drawings in its Sunday edition and a novel does not, book-binding costs average 22¢ per book. It costs the city of New York nearly 10¢ per copy each week to clean up discarded copies of the Sunday New York Times.
