Abstract Background Fatty masses are common and may be encountered in the foot and ankle. In some cases, normal subcutaneous fat may be mistaken for a discrete mass. Aims The aim of this study was to evaluate the common finding of prominent subcutaneous fat at the medial midfoot resembling a lipoma and to determine the prevalence of this pseudolesion by applying a series of potential size cutoff criteria. Materials and Methods Three musculoskeletal radiologists retrospectively evaluated 91 sequentially performed magnetic resonance imaging examinations of the ankle to measure fat resembling a discrete lipoma at the medial midfoot. Each blinded reader measured the largest area of continuous subcutaneous fat in orthogonal axial, coronal craniocaudal, and coronal transverse dimensions. Patient age, sex, and study indications were also recorded. Statistical analysis was performed with R and SAS 9.4 software Results A discrete fatty pseudolesion as defined by measuring at least 1 cm in all planes by measurements of at least two of three readers was present in 87% of cases (79 of 91). When a size criterion of 1.5 cm was used, a pseudolesion was documented in 14% of cases (13 of 91). There was a significant correlation between larger pseudolesion size and female sex in the axial plane; however, there was no correlation in the coronal craniocaudal and coronal transverse dimensions. Conclusions Subcutaneous fat at the medial midfoot often has a mass-like appearance that could be mistaken for a lipoma. It is important to recognize this pseudolesion variant and not to confuse the imaging appearance for a discrete mass.

The paper considers some articulatory features of allophones of the vowel /i/ in the Altai-Kizhi dialect (spoken in the locality Ust-Kan, Altai) of the Altai language visualized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Altai-Kizhi is the central basic dialect of the Altai literary language. In Altai, each rural locality represents a unique dialect, whose relevance of studying was emphasized by V. V. Radlov. Speech sounds of the /i/-type in the dialects of the Altai language are realized mainly as front variants with different degrees of openness. In the written Altai speech, the symbol “и” is used to denote narrow front non-labialized vowel; some variants of the Altai vowel /i/ are central-back differing in this from the Russian vowel /i/. Experimental data on the territorial dialects of the Altai-Kizhi dialect, obtained from its 6 native speakers (d1-d6) taking into account variable inherent palate height, shows both the common articulation bases of native speakers (clearly-expressed frontness) and their differences (variable openness).

The peroneus quartus muscle is an accessory muscle seen in the lateral compartment of the lower leg. Although the peroneus quartus muscle is asymptomatic in general, it sometimes becomes pathologic. We present the rare case of bilateral ankle pain with crepitation caused by the peroneus quartus muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging should be considered to assist with diagnosing this condition. Foot and ankle surgeons should consider it in the preoperative differential diagnosis when patients present with posterior ankle pain.

ABSTRACT Objectives Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) affects the support of the medial longitudinal arch and stability of the hindfoot. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships of PTTD with foot and ankle functions and foot deformities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods A total of 129 patients (258 feet) who underwent magnetic plain and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging were enrolled in this study. Positive magnetic resonance imaging findings were defined as tenosynovitis and incomplete and complete rupture of the posterior tibial tendon. Foot and ankle functions were assessed using the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot standard rating system for the RA foot and ankle scale (JSSF-RA) and self-administered foot evaluation questionnaire. Plain radiographs were examined for the hallux valgus angle, first metatarsal and second metatarsal angle, lateral talo-first metatarsal angle, and calcaneal pitch angle. Results PTTD was associated with motion in the JSSF-RA (p = .024), activities of daily living in JSSF-RA (p = .017), and pain and pain-related factors in the self-administered foot evaluation questionnaire (p = .001). The calcaneal pitch angle was significantly lower in the feet with PTTD than in those without PTTD (median: 16.2° vs. 18.0°; p = .007). Conclusions The present study shows that PTTD was associated with foot and ankle functions and flatfoot deformity. Thus, a better understanding of PTTD in patients with RA is important for the management of foot and ankle disorders in clinical practice.

Renal angiomyoadenomatous tumour is a rare, recently describedneoplasm with a distinctive histological appearance. Althoughreported in the pathology literature, to our knowledge, no priorreports have described its imaging appearance. We describe thecomputed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging featuresof an incidentally detected renal angiomyoadenomatous tumourthat appeared as a well-marginated, solid T2-hypointense enhancing mass, in a 50-year-old woman. It is indistinguishable from a variety of benign and malignant renal neoplasms.
