A family is described in which 3/11 children showed a homozygous deficiency of C3, and both parents and six other children had subnormal levels of C3. The three children with selective C3 deficiency suffered repeatedly from bacterial infections, whereas the parents and the other siblings were clinically healthy. During infectious episodes the patients showed a maculopapular skin rash, and at such times immune complexes were present in the serum. Biopsy specimens of the skin lesions showed the picture of leukocytoclastic vasculitis.

The clinical efficacy of plasma exchange with fresh frozen single donor plasma in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) was evaluated. Six patients with the classical findings of TTP, had plasmapheresis using the Haemonetics Model 30. Treatments were initiated daily. Two to three liters total exchanges were done; 1-1½ liters fresh frozen plasma were infused with each exchange. In five of the six cases, therapy was begun immediately after diagnosis. Steroids and antiplatelet agents were also used. Five of the patients were comatose when treatment was begun; the sixth had neurological symptoms of memory loss and aphasia with severe hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Circulating immune complex measurements were performed in all patients prior to treatment using the Clq and Raji cell assays.Three patients (2 in coma) responded to therapy. The two comatose patients required more than four daily treatments before beginning to respond (followed by four and six alternate day treatments, respectively). The third patient went into remission after four daily treatments. Three patients in coma died, two deteriorating after the first plasma exchange. The third, treated after a delay due to severe cardiac complications, subsequently died. The three responding patients were younger than the three who died. The two in coma who responded to therapy had a longer course of symptoms (suggesting disease onset prior to onset of coma) than the three who died. Circulating immune complexes by the Clq assay were negative in all six patients. The Raji cell assay was positive in one patient.Even severely ill comatose patients with TTP respond to plasma exchange, but aggressive, persistent therapy may be required before response is seen. More fulminant disease with rapid onset may fail to respond. Circulating immune complexes do not appear to mediate the disease process.

To develop the method of early diagnostics of the threat of miscarriage under primary placental insufficiency in 102 women at influenza virus A(HN2) there was studied the vessel resistance in the right and left uterine arteries, ultrastructure of uterine and villous chorion; in the blood serum there were defined titers of antivirus antibodies, concentration of mean molecular peptides, seromucoid and circulating immune complexes (the main group). 30 women with physiologic course of pregnancy were included in the control group. Among the patients of the main group there were three subgroups. The first group had 36 patients with influenza virus A(H3N2) (antibody titers were 1:4-1:16), the second group had 34 pregnant women with influenza infection (antibody titers were 1:8-1:32), and the third group included 32 women with influenza virus А(Н3N2) (antibody titers were 1:32-1:128), in whom clinical and echographic signs of the threat of miscarriage developed at the 6-8th day of the disease. It was found out that in the patients of the third group at the 2-4th day of the virus infection in the blood serum there was the increase of the contents of mean molecular peptides till 0.290±0.0011 units of optical density, of seromucoid till 0.119±0.0011 units of optical density and of circulating immune complexes till 0.221±0.0021 units of optical density (in the second subgroup it was 0.259±0.0013 units of optical density, р<0.001; 0.115±0.0013 units of optical density, р<0.001; 0.190±0.0020 units of optical density, р<0.001, respectively). This caused the increase of the value of systolic-diastolic ratio in the right uterine artery till 3.18±0.009 standard units, and in the left till 3.20±0.015 standard units (in the second group it was 2.97±0.014 standard units, р<0.001 and 2.96±0.013 standard units, р<0.001, respectively) and it led to the development of clinical-ultrasound signs of the threat of miscarriage at the 6-8th day of the infectious disease in 100 % of women.

An examination was performed of 50 employees at an enterprise where they were in professional contact with beryllium. In most workers, it was detected an increase of interleukine-8, interferon- , growing level of immunoglobulin E and circulating immune complexes. It was shown that the contact with beryllium compounds leads to the interferon- level growth only in women. In men, alterations are identified in the direction of increased concentrations of common immunoglobulin E and circulating immune complexes.

During canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanL), due to Leishmania infantum (L. infantum), uncontrolled infection leads to a strong humoral immune response. As a consequence of the production of high antibody levels and the prolonged presence of parasite antigens, circulating immune complexes (CIC) are formed, which can be deposited in certain organs and tissues, inducing vasculitis, uveitis, dermatitis and especially glomerulonephritis and renal failure. A method to detect CIC and quantify their levels in serum samples from dogs infected with L. infantum has been recently described. It allowed demonstration of a correlation between CIC levels and disease severity. Thus, CIC measurement may be useful for diagnosis, assessment of disease progression and monitoring response to treatment. This is an interesting finding, considering that there remains an urgent need for identification of novel biomarkers to achieve a correct diagnosis and for optimal disease staging of dogs suffering from Leishmania infection. The objective of the present review is to shed light on the role of CIC in CanL, as well as to highlight their potential use not only as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers but also as a valuable tool in vaccine development and new immunotherapy strategies to prevent or control disease outcome.

Abstract Objectives The aim of the present study is to evaluate the role of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM) and circulating immune complexes (CIC) as tumor marker in oral cancer and precancer patients. Materials and Methods The present study was performed on 45 individuals subdivided into three groups, that is, oral precancer, oral cancer and healthy individuals, and levels of immunoglobulins, and CIC was estimated by turbidometry and ELISA method. Results In the present study, the mean serum IgA levels in oral precancer were 161.00 ( ±  118.02) mg/dL, oral cancers were 270.67 ( ±  171.44) mg/dL, and controls were 133.73 ( ±  101.31) mg/dL. Mean serum levels of IgG in oral precancer were 1,430.87 ( ±  316) mg/dL, oral cancers were 1,234.27 ( ±  365.42) mg/dL, and controls were 593.87 ( ±  323.06) mg/dL. Conclusion We found that the levels of serum IgG and IgA were elevated consistently in precancer and cancer group, and Serum IgM levels were increased only in precancer. Also, significant increase in serum CIC levels were seen in oral precancer and cancer group on comparison with control.
