We report on the velocity V and the electromechanical coupling coefficient K2 of the first and the second leaky surface acoustic waves in various propagation directions in the a-plane AlN single-crystal. For c-propagation direction, the second leaky wave exhibited the velocity of 11016 m/s and K2 of 0.45%. For this direction, the temperature coefficient of frequency was found to be -30 ppm/°C. A near match of the velocities of the plane and leaky waves in the a-plane AlN allowed us to establish analytical relationships between the piezoelectric and elastic constants. A full set of elastic and piezoelectric constants of AlN has been evaluated by fitting the measured and calculated dependencies of velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients on the propagation direction for both Rayleigh and leaky waves.

Residual stress in polycrystalline coatings can be determined by X-ray diffraction. The data collection requirements are summarized and evaluated in this paper. First, general requirements for stress measurements are described. Then, requirements related to the diffraction geometry and the specimen manipulation are considered. Finally, requirements with respect to specimen characteristics, including various coating-substrate combinations are presented. Polycrystalline coatings can be nanocrystalline, randomly orientated or highly textured. The substrates can be of any nature: amorphous, polycrystalline or single crystal. The complete set of requirements leads to a measurement advice for a particular coatingsubstrate specimen, which includes the choice of diffraction geometry and the data collection strategy. Based on two complementary test cases it is demonstrated that the set of rules is complete and that they can be applied to any type of polycrystalline specimen.

PMN-PT, a piezoelectric single crystal, has been known to be a better material for transducer arrays due to its high electromechanical coupling coefficient (k33) and high dielectric and piezoelectric constants. It may also be good even for high frequency single element transducers using relatively high kt and low attenuation and velocity dispersion. However, it’s challenging to fabricate high frequency transducers using PMN-PT since it is easily breakable and requires small area and thickness of the transducer. A KLM model was used to simulate a 40 MHz single element transducer including 2 matching layers and a conductive backing. The simulation showed that the PMN-PT transducer turned out to be better in sensitivity and bandwidth than a 40 MHz LiNbO3 transducer. A 40 MHz PMN-29%PT transducer was fabricated and the pulse echo signals were obtained and analyzed. Its sensitivity was found to be –48 dB and –6dB bandwidth was about 48 %.

The temperature dependence of single-crystal elastic constants of L10-ordered single-crystals of FePd . A complete set of elastic constants has been determined with the resonance ultrasound spectroscopy technique. The compounds clearly show a tetragonal elastic anisotropy, c11 < c33 and c44 < c66. The temperature dependencies of the anisotropies are not simply explained by the variation of axial ratio (c/a) of the crystal.
