Australia has continued its recent run of exploration success by yielding a series of impressive discoveries in 2019, despite a contraction in exploration activity. In 2019, Australian explorers were rewarded with six conventional onshore discoveries and three offshore discoveries, while only drilling 20 exploration wells. The exploration drilling highlights were the discoveries in the Vulcan Sub-basin (Bratwurst and Orchid) and the North Perth Basin (Beharra Springs Deep and West Erregulla). 2019 also saw successful appraisal drilling on the Dorado and Corvus discoveries as well as renewed exploration efforts in the Beetaloo Sub-basin unconventional plays. The exploration farm-in deals of note were Santos farming into Armour’s South Nicholson Basin acreage and Conoco farming into 3D Oil’s Otway Basin acreage. Australia is set for an exciting year of exploration with further drilling planned in the North Perth Basin and other high impact exploration wells on the North West Shelf. In a positive sign for future exploration, 13 new offshore permits were awarded with committed work programs or cash bids totalling AU$223 million. This is the first uptick in offshore permit awards since 2010.

The Polish Geological Institute – NRI has conducted investigations of the Kupferschiefer series since 1957, when the giant sediment-hosted stratiform Cu-Ag ore deposit was discovered in the central part of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. Until 1991, a number of drilling programs were completed by PGI-NRI and later research has been focusing mainly on cooperation with oil and gas industry and their core material. Over the last few years, thanks to systematic examination of the drill holes located in the north-western extension, many prospective areas have been recognized and delineated. These prospects are located between Lubin-Sieroszowice deposit and the eastern part of the Zielona Góra oxidized field. In the Kożuchów area, the lower part of Zechstein copper-bearing series contain only relict sulphide mineralization accompanied by iron oxides while reduced rocks with metal sulphides occur in the uppermost part of Zechstein Limestone or at the base of Lower Anhydrite. Grochowice area, where reduced facies prevail in copper-bearing series, is characterized by the predomination of rich Cu-Ag mineralization proximaly to oxidized area. The western part of studied area is dominated by Cu-S type sulphides (chalcocite, digenite, covellite) whereas the eastern part is represented by Cu-Fe-S type minerals (bornite, chalcopyrite) with high galena and sphalerite concentrations. The spatial variability of sulphide mineralization with respect to the oxidized rocks indicates that Bytom Odrzański deposit extends in the north-west direction, continuing in the form of a copper belt along the eastern border of the oxidized area. An extensive deep exploration drilling program is implemented to verify the resource potential within predicted copper belt.

The Oobagooma Sub-basin of the Roebuck Basin includes the offshore extension of the onshore Fitzroy Trough of the Canning Basin. Together with the Leveque Platform, it covers an area of approximately 50,000 km2, yet only 14 exploration wells have been drilled in the area to date, five of which were drilled in the past 30 years. The sub-basin contains sediments ranging in age from Ordovician to Recent. This study examines the petroleum prospectivity of a region that is one of the least explored on Australia’s North West Shelf. Recent exploration drilling has revived interest in the area, with the 2014 Phoenix South–1 oil discovery in the offshore Bedout Sub-basin and the 2015 Ungani Far West–1 oil discovery in the onshore Fitzroy Trough. The two most significant source rock sequences relevant to the Oobagooma Sub-basin are the Carboniferous Laurel Formation and the Jurassic section. The former interval is part of a proven petroleum system onshore and is the source of the gas discovered at Yulleroo and oil at Ungani and Ungani Far West. A thick Jurassic trough to the north of the Oobagooma Sub-basin is believed to be the source of the oil and gas in Arquebus–1A and gas in Psepotus–1. Hydrocarbon charge modelling indicates significant expulsion occurred during both the Cretaceous and Tertiary from both source intervals. Trap timing is generally favourable given that inversion structures formed in several episodes during the Late Jurassic to Late Tertiary. The Early Triassic, now proven to be oil prone in the Phoenix South area (Molyneux et al, 2015), provides an additional (albeit less likely) source for the Oobagooma Sub-basin. These rocks are thin to absent within the Oobagooma Sub-basin, so long-distance migration would be required from deep troughs to the west.

Australian deepwater (>500 m) basinal areas are generally extensions of known shallow-water basins, filled with non-marine to marginal marine sedimentary facies. True deepwater sedimentary facies are found in very few of these basins. In Australia, the transition to deep water is often associated with the edge of thick, prograding Tertiary carbonates, which have buried the inboard sediments and promoted recent hydrocarbon generation.Of ~1,040 offshore exploration wells, only 61 have been drilled in deep water, and only one in depths greater than 1,500 m. Most deepwater exploration drilling has occurred on the greater North West Shelf. About 9.4 billion boe of recoverable deepwater resources have been discovered since 1979, of which 94% is gas and 6% liquids. Elsewhere in Australia, deepwater drilling has been sporadic, with only seven wells drilled on the entire southern margin, and none on the southwestern or eastern margins, due to perceptions of limited prospectivity or limited accessibility. The northern basins of Australia lie predominantly in shallow water.An unprecedented amount of deepwater exploration activity will occur in the next three years, with more than 17,500 km of 2D, 14,300 km2 of 3D, and 36 wells committed. Secondary term (variable) commitments comprise a further 5,200 km of 2D, 1,200 km2 of 3D and 24 wells. The challenges for exploration of Australia’s frontier deepwater provinces include identifying new petroleum systems capable of hosting large fields, and working in harsh, remote and high-cost operating environments. Government-sponsored initiatives should encourage future uptake of the frontier areas.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish the research impact of the National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researchers’ output at the North-West University (NWU), South Africa, from 2006 to 2017. Design/methodology/approach The study used bibliometrics and altmetrics methods to determine the production of research outputs and the impact of NWU’s NRF-rated researchers’ publications. Various tools including Google Scholar (GS), Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, ResearchGate (RG) and Mendeley were used to collect data. The citations in the three bibliographic databases were used as proxy for academic impact, while reads and readerships in RG and Mendeley were used to determine societal impact of the researchers. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to test the relationship between citations in the three bibliographic databases and reads and readerships in RG and Mendeley. Findings The main findings were that the majority of NWU’s NRF-rated researchers’ publications emanated from GS, followed by Scopus and then WoS. GS output also had more citations. There were 6,026 research outputs in RG which were read for 676,919 times and 5,850 in Mendeley with 142,621 readerships. Correlations between RG and all three bibliographic databases’ citations were scant. Strong relationships between the three bibliographic databases’ citations and Mendeley readerships were found. Practical implications Academic librarians who interact with researchers who would like to predict future academic impact of their documents can be advised to consider Mendeley readerships with some level of confidence compared to RG reads. These results point to the importance of constant self-evaluation by researchers to ensure that they have balanced profiles across the three main bibliographic databases that are also considered for ratings. These results point to the relevancy of GS to evaluate research beyond the academy. Social implications The fact that researchers are contributing research that seeks to improve the general welfare of the population (beyond the academy) is a positive sign as society look up to researchers and research to solve their socio-economic problems. Social media play an important role as they serve as indicators that indicators point to wider research impacts and wider access by many different groups of people including the members of society at large. They point to research that is accessible to not only researchers and those who have access to their research but also the society at large. Originality/value Although the practice of rating researchers is common in different research ecosystems, the researchers could not find any evidence of studies conducted using a combination of bibliometrics and altmetrics to asses rated researchers’ output. This study covers and compares social impact based on data obtained from two academic social media sites and three main bibliographic databases (GS, Scopus and WoS).

Oreochromis mossambicus is currently receiving much attention as a candidater species for aquaculture programs within Southern Africa. This has stimulated interest in its breeding cycle as well as the morphological characteristics of the gonads. Limited information is available on SEM and TEM observations of the male gonads. It is known that the testis of O. mossambicus is a paired, intra-abdominal structure of the lobular type, although further details of its characteristics are not known. Current investigations have shown that spermatids reach full maturity some two months after the female becomes gravid. Throughout the year, the testes contain spermatids at various stages of development although spermiogenesis appears to be maximal during November when spawning occurs. This paper describes the morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of the testes and spermatids.Specimens of this fish were collected at Syferkuil Dam, 8 km north- west of the University of the North over a twelve month period, sacrificed and the testes excised.
