An efficient and convenient approach for the synthesis of thiazole derivatives from α-halo ketones, thiosemicarbazide, and o-hydroxybenzaldehydes in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-400) is described. The preparation procedure presented is operationally simple and environmentally benign. Some of the major advantages of this procedure are high yields and ease of operation.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) supported metal nitrates such as ferric nitrate and manganese nitrate were accomplished as well-organized reagents for Hunsdiecker conversion of α,β-unsaturated acids to β-nitrostyrenes under acid-free and solvent free conditions using grind-stone technique. However, in the case of unsaturated aliphatic acids, nitro alkene derivatives were obtained as products. PEG-400 was found the best among the other PEGs (PEG-200,300, 400, 600, 3000 and 6000) used in this protocol.

A series of perfluoropolyether/poly(ethylene glycol) (PFPE/PEG) triblock copolymers PEG/PFPE/PEG (P1–P3) and PFPE/PEG/PFPE (P4–P5) were prepared via thiol–ene click reaction in high yields.

A family of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL) were synthesized in high yields by the ring-opening polymerization of monomethoxy-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) with ε-caprolactone in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Their crystallization behaviors were studied by DSC, XRD. The results illustrated that crystallization behaviors of the copolymers depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. The melting peak of PCL block appeared gradually in the XRD patterns and DSC curves in copolymers, with increasing of the length of PCL blocks.

Colloidal Silver nanoparticles were prepared under mild conditions using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in the presence of PVA as surfactant. Ethylene glycol was used as a reducing agent for the preparation of metal particles at room temperature. Ag+1can be smoothly reduced to silver nanoparticles at ambient condition in PEG 400. UV-visible studies demonstrated that the reducing rate of Ag+1to nano-Ag was remarkably enhanced with the increased amount of the PEG. The transmission microscope images prove that the reduced Ag nanoparticles were spherical in shape. The pathway described here was considered as a green route for preparation of silver nanoparticles.

A novel and ligand-free method was developed for the decarboxylative cross-coupling of alkynylcarboxylic acids with arylboronic acids. By using an environmentally friendly H2O–poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-400) system as the reaction medium, a series of internal alkynes were synthesized in good yields and with remarkable selectivity. The Pd(OAc)2–H2O–PEG-400 catalytic system could be used for up to three cycles without any loss of activity, demonstrating the robustness of the approach.
