Reproductive dynamics of the grooved tiger prawn, Penaeus semisulcatus, in the north-western Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia

The reproductive cycle of female P. semisulcatus was investigated in the region north of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria from August 1983 to March 1985. Approximately 1750 trawls were carried out over 21 monthly sampling cruises, and 13 748 females were examined. The minimum size at maturity was 29 mm carapace length (CL), and 50% of the population were mature at 39 mm CL. The proportion of females which had mated increased sharply above 34 mm CL with a maximum of 80% of females inseminated in the size range 38-54 mm CL. An index of population egg production, calculated from female abundance, the proportion of females spawning and fecundity according to size, was used as an indicator of reproductive output. Egg production was markedly seasonal, with a major spawning peak in August-September, and a minor one in February. Spawning occurred in a limited area within rhe study area. The spawning stock of P. semisulcatus is likely to be vulnerable to fishing pressure because the area and time of major spawning coincides with the major fishing effort in the region.

The minimum size at maturity for P. esculentus was 25 mm carapace length (CL), and 50% of the population were mature at 32 mm CL. The proportion of females which had mated increased sharply above 28 mm CL to a maximum of 80% inseminated in the size range 32-50 mm CL. An index of population egg production, calculated from female abundance, the proportion of females spawning and fecundity with size, was used as an indicator of reproductive output. Egg production tended to be spread throughout the year, but with eggs being produced most consistently in late winter and early spring. Spawning occurred in a limited area within the study area. A comparison of P. esculentus and P. semisulcatus showed that P. esculentus matures at a smaller size (50% at 32 mm CL) than P. semisulcatus (50% at 39 mm CL), fecundity is lower, spawning is nearer inshore and egg production is less strongly seasonal.

This paper investigates the stock-recruitment and equilibrium yield dynamics for the two species of tiger prawns (Penaeus esculentus and Penaeus semisulcatus) in Australia's most productive prawn fishery: the Northern Prawn Fishery. Commercial trawl logbooks for 1970-93 and research surveys are used to develop population models for these prawns. A population model that incorporates continuous recruitment is developed. Annual spawning stock and recruitment indices are then estimated from the population model. Spawning stock indices represent the abundance of female prawns that are likely to spawn; recruitment indices represent the abundance of all prawns less than a certain size. The relationships between spawning stock and subsequent recruitment (SRR), between recruitment and subsequent spawning stock (RSR), and between recruitment and commercial catch were estimated through maximum-likelihood models that incorporated autoregressive terms. Yield as a function of fishing effort was estimated by constraining to equilibrium the SRR and RSR. The resulting production model was then used to determine maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and its corresponding fishing effort (fMSY). Long-term yield estimates for the two tiger prawn species range between 3700 and 5300 t. The fishing effort at present is close to the level that should produce MSY for both species of tiger prawns. However, current landings, recruitment and spawning stock are below the equilibrium values predicted by the models. This may be because of uncertainty in the spawning stock-recruitment relationships, a change in carrying capacity, biased estimates of fishing effort, unreliable catch statistics, or simplistic assumptions about stock structure. Although our predictions of tiger prawn yields are uncertain, management will soon have to consider new measures to counteract the effects of future increases in fishing effort.

The reproductive cycle of the green tiger prawn (Penaeus semisulcatus) was investigated in the coastal waters of Bushehr, Iran, Persian Gulf, from January 2003 to March 2004, with the aim of determining spawning seasons, durations, and locations in those waters. Bushehr waters are one of the main fishing grounds for P. semisulcatus in the Persian Gulf. Spawning peaks between December and March, but there is also some spawning in October. The minimum size at maturity was 24 mm carapace length (CL), and 50% were mature at 40 mm CL. The proportion of females that mated increased sharply above this size (40 mm), with 90% of females sexually mature at 54 mm CL. Spawning took place in a limited part of the study area, mostly offshore. Overexploiting the spawning stock could result in reduced reproductive output, limiting fishery production.

Abstract In response to collision and convergence between India and Asia during the Cenozoic, convergence took place between the Pamir and South Tian Shan. Here we present new detrital zircon U-Pb ages coupled with conglomerate clast counting and sedimentary data from the late Cenozoic Wuheshalu section in the convergence zone, to shed light on the convergence process of the Pamir and South Tian Shan. Large Triassic zircon U-Pb age populations in all seven samples suggest that Triassic igneous rocks from the North Pamir were the major source area for the late Cenozoic Wuheshalu section. In the Miocene, large populations of the North Pamir component supports rapid exhumation in the North Pamir and suggest that topography already existed there since the early Miocene. Exhumation of the South Tian Shan was relatively less important in the Miocene and its detritus could only reach a limited area in the foreland area. Gradually increasing sediment loading and convergence of the Pamir and South Tian Shan caused rapid subsidence in the convergence area. Since ca. 6–5.3 Ma, the combination of a major North Pamir component and a minor South Tian Shan component at the Wuheshalu section is consistent with active deformation of the South Tian Shan and the North Pamir. During deposition of the upper Atushi Formation, a larger proportion of North Pamir–derived sediments was deposited in the Wuheshalu section, maybe because faulting and northward propagation of the North Pamir caused northward displacement of the depocenter to north of the Wuheshalu section.

Concurrent trawl surveys and tag-recapture studies carried out in the north-western Gulf of Carpentaria between August 1983 and March 1985 provided a detailed description of the growth, movement and age structure of the population of grooved tiger prawns, Penaeus semisulcatus. Growth curves based on the tag-recapture data were used to interpret the length-frequency data collected from the trawl surveys and to determine the number of year classes present. The length-frequency data pertaining to the 1984 year class provided the basis for an estimate of the longevity of the species and a description of the offshore movement patterns. The effect of infestation by the bopyrid parasite Epipenaeon ingens on growth and movement was also examined. Individuals of P. semisulcatus may live for about 2 years, but in the north-western Gulf of Carpentaria very few survive beyond 18 months. Subadults recruit to the offshore fishing grounds during summer and autumn (November-March) at sizes between 20 and 25 mm carapace length (CL) (between 4 and 6 months). By 18 months of age, males reach a size of about 39 mm CL and females about 50 mm CL. The growth rates of both sexes are affected by the presence of E. ingens: males grow faster and larger, the females slower and smaller, with both sexes attaining a size of around 43 mm CL by 18 months of age. The recruiting year class continues to disperse offshore during autumn (from March to May) in such a way that by winter (June and July), although highest abundance is in depths of 35-40 m, the population extends well beyond the commercial fishery into depths greater than 50 m. Although prawns infested with E. ingens show a similar offshore movement, they do not venture beyond depths greater than about 30 m. The sex ratio within the year class remains at around 1 : 1 from the time of recruitment to about 1 year of age. Thereafter, the percentage of females declines steadily; by about 18 months of age very few prawns remain in the population, and of these only about 25% are female. In contrast, the sex ratio for prawns infested with E. ingens remains at about 1 : 1 throughout.

A reanalysis of North Sea plaice spawning-stock biomass using the annual egg production method. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1999–2011. Uncertainty about the quality of current virtual population analysis-based stock assessment for North Sea plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) has led to various abundance indices. We compared biomass estimates from the annual egg production (AEP) method with current stock assessments based on catch-at-age to validate the current and historical perception of exploitation. The AEP method was also used to investigate the dynamics of the spatial components of plaice in the North Sea. We corrected for fecundity down-regulation and changes in sex ratio. Estimates from both methods were similar in trend and absolute biomass. On the Dogger Bank, there was a dramatic decline in biomass from 1948 and 1950 to 2004, and in the Southern Bight, the stock appeared to increase from 1987 and 1988 to 2004, although not reaching the historically high levels of 1948 or 1950. The timing of spawning of North Sea plaice does not appear to have changed throughout the period of high exploitation. We conclude that the AEP method is a useful way to hindcast the spatial dynamics of heavily exploited flatfish stocks.

The Present study assessed the fishery state of longnose trevally (Carangoides chrysophrys) in the North West Arabian Sea. Key population parameters were estimated, and yield and spawning stock biomass per recruit analyses were conducted. The equation presented by Alagaraja (1984) for estimating natural mortality resulted in M = 0.29 year-1 and lead to the best estimate of longevity. Hence this value was used in the yield and spawning stock biomass per recruit analyses. The total mortality (Z) was estimated as 0.39 year-1, based on a catch curve analysis. Length-at- and age-at-50% captures were 38.21cm and 4 years respectively. The yield and spawning biomass per recruit analyses indicate that the current fishing mortality rate (Fcurr) was lower than the fishing mortality corresponding to the maximum yield per recruit (Fmax) and was also higher than the target reference point (F0.1) , suggesting that overfishing, currently, does not occur. However, any increase in the fishing effort in the future may lead to overfishing.

A simple stochastic model of a fish population subject to natural and fishing mortalities is described. The fishing effort is assumed to vary over different periods but to be constant within each period. A maximum-likelihood approach is developed for estimating natural mortality (M) and the catchability coefficient (q) simultaneously from catch-and-effort data. If there is not enough contrast in the data to provide reliable estimates of both M and q, as is often the case in practice, the method can be used to obtain the best possible values of q for a range of possible values of M. These techniques are illustrated with tiger prawn (Penaeus semisulcatus) data from the Northern Prawn Fishery of Australia.

Since 1979, red coral harvesting in Sardinia has been regulated by regional laws. The regulations, including a minimum take size of 10-mm basal diameter, were imposed to limit and control harvesting. Our study indicated that >75% of the red coral colonies harvested in 2007–08 in the north-western coast were above the legal minimum size for exploitation. Moreover, extensive surveys with remotely operated vehicles allowed us to document the real structure of wild populations. Large colonies (>10 mm) represented a big portion of the population (~38% of the total), suggesting that harvesting effort did not affect yet the maximum size of colonies. All these results seem to be confirmed by the application of the model of Beverton and Holt. This model shows that the fishery of red coral in Sardinia reaches its maximum yield at an age at first capture of 20 years, an age significantly lower than the average age of 30 years calculated for the colonies actually harvested in the Sardinian coast. Our data confirmed that the measures enacted in the Sardinian regulations provide for an adequate management of this resource and, in addition, can represent a guideline for other countries that still lack a valid management plan.
