Abstract We proposed and demonstrated a flexible, endoscopic, and minimally invasive coherent anti-Raman Stokes scattering (CARS) measurement method for single-cell application, employing a tapered optical fiber probe. A few-mode fiber (FMF), whose generated four-wave mixing band is out of CARS signals, was selected to fabricate tapered optical fiber probes, deliver CARS excitation pulses, and collect CARS signals. The adiabatic tapered fiber probe with a diameter of 11.61 µm can focus CARS excitation lights without mismatch at the focal point. The measurements for proof-of-concept were made with methanol, ethanol, cyclohexane, and acetone injected into simulated cells. The experimental results show that the tapered optical fiber probe can detect carbon-hydrogen (C–H) bond-rich substances and their concentration. To our best knowledge, this optical fiber probe provides the minimum size among probes for detecting CARS signals. These results pave the way for minimally invasive live-cell detection in the future.

Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects and to evaluate the initial, midterm and long-term results of the treatment. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Paediatric Cardiology, Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi, from Jul 2017 to Jun 2018. Methodology: Sixty-four patients underwent transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect. Size of the defect was measured by Transoesophageal/Transthoracic. Follow up was carried out at twenty-four hours, one month, six months and at twelve months. Early, Midterm and late complications after device occlusion were analysed using SPSS-22 statistical software. Results: Minimum size of atrial septal defect on echocardiography was 7 mm and maximum size was 31 mm with mean of 18.3 ± 5.7 mm. The procedure was successful in 96.8% cases. There was only one device embolization (1.56%). Cobrahead” configuration malformation of the device occurred in one case (1.56%). Mitral valve regurgitation did not occur in any of the case. There was no residual shunt across the device in the present study. ECG abnormalities associated with transcatheter closure did not occur in any of the patient. In intermediate and long-term follow up, no complication like cardiac erosion was seen in all cases under study. Conclusion: Transcatheter occlusion of ASD with device was found effective and safe procedure with minimal complication rate, short hospital stay, good short, intermediate and long-term results.

Scientific data on distribution and abundance of endangered species are the foundation for their effective conservation and management. In this paper, we present results of the first scientifically – based estimation of lynx population size in Croatia. The goal of the study was to determine the area of lynx distribution and to estimate the minimum size of lynx population in Croatia in the period 2018 - 2020. To determine lynx distribution, 902 signs of lynx presence were collected in the period from the beginning of May 2018 until the end of April 2020. Out of those, 92.8% of lynx observations were categorized as C1, 2.8% as C2 and 4.4% as C3. Permanent lynx presence was confirmed in Primorsko – Goranska and Ličko – Senjska county, in southern part of Karlovac county and north-eastern part of Zadar county on the total surface of 7200 km2. For the minimum population size estimation, 804 camera trap photographs led to identification of 89 – 108 adult lynxes. Among 108 identified individuals there were 29 females, 22 males, while for 7 animals the sex was not determined. During the two reproductive seasons, we photographed 44 cubs in 25 litters. Future important steps in lynx population monitoring are correcting the deficiencies identified in this study and implementation of methodology that will allow us to use spatial capture recapture models for estimation of lynx abundance in Croatia.

The diffraction of vortex laser beams with circular polarization (with different direction of polarization rotation) by silicon ring gratings was investigated in this paper. The silicon diffractive axicons with different numerical apertures (NA) were considered as such ring gratings. The considered diffractive axicons are compared with single silicon circular protrusion (cylinder). The finite difference time domain method was used for Light propagation (3D) through the proposed silicon ring gratings and silicon cylinder. The possibility of subwavelength focusing by varying the height of the elements is demonstrated. In particular, it is numerically shown that a silicon cylinder forms a light spot with the minimum size (intensity) of the longitudinal component of the electric field FWHM is 0.32λ.

Abstract This paper proposes a novel density-based method for structural design considering restrictions of multiaxis machining processes. A new mathematical formulation based on Heaviside function is presented to transform the design field into a geometry which can be manufactured by multi-axis machining process. The formulation is developed for 5-axis machining, which can be also applied to 2.5D milling restriction. The filter techniques are incorporated to effectively control the minimum size of void region. The proposed method is demonstrated by solving the compliance minimization problem for different machinable freeform designs. Several two and three-dimensional numerical examples are presented and discussed in detail.

The existing regulatory documents on photogrammetric works are technologically outdated. They neither take into account the peculiarities of aerial photography with digital cameras, the navigation equipment used and modern image processing methods, nor regulate the technique of calculating the pixel size on the ground. In order to select the pixel size in the terrain for aerial photography with topographic requirements concerning to the results, the method of multivariate analysis of the input data is proposed. It is supposed to ensure the minimum pixel size on the ground according to such criteria as the accuracy of the aerial triangulation results, the accuracy of building a digital elevation model for orthotransformation, the possibility of the objects interpretation with a specified minimum size and consideration of camera exposure parameters. To determine the accuracy criteria, we used formulas for pre- calculation of spatial phototriangulation accuracy with multiple choice of parameters. Examples of pixel size selection in the terrain at designing aerial photography by an amateur camera for the purposes of large-scale mapping are considered. Conclusions on the necessity of solving the issues of selecting parameters of large scale aerial photography, taking into account multiple input data and used aerial survey equipment are made.

The paper solves the determination of the optimal size of the shear gap when dividing components with a circular cross section (hydroformed metal bellows and tubes) with a disc knife to achieve the smallest burr size on the divided surfaces. The analyzes were performed on bellows with an outer diameter of 15 mm and a wall thickness of 0.4 mm. During the experiments, the size of the shear gap between the inner disc knife and the outer knife was changed, and the pressing force of the inner disc knife was changed. The experiments were carried out using a cutting tool after 20,000 cuts and after 120,000 cuts. The optimal size of the cutting gap was determined, allowing the minimum size of the burr to be achieved, thus reducing the time to remove it by brushing or tumbling in the subsequent operation. The mentioned procedure can be applied to analogous cases of division.

Herein, the genetic diversity of the local Přeštice Black-Pied pig breed was assessed by the simultaneous analysis of the pedigree and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data. The information about sire line, dam, date of birth, sex, breeding line, and herd for 1971 individuals was considered in the pedigree analysis. The SNP analysis (n = 181) was performed using the Illumina PorcineSNP60 BeadChip kit. The quality of pedigree and SNPs and the inbreeding coefficients (F) and effective population size (Ne) were evaluated. The correlations between inbreeding based on the runs of homozygosity (FROH) and pedigree (FPED) were also calculated. The average FPED for all animals was 3.44%, while the FROH varied from 10.81% for a minimum size of 1 Mbp to 3.98% for a minimum size of 16 Mbp. The average minor allele frequency was 0.28 ± 0.11. The observed and expected within breed heterozygosities were 0.38 ± 0.13 and 0.37 ± 0.12, respectively. The Ne, obtained using both the data sources, reached values around 50 animals. Moderate correlation coefficients (0.49–0.54) were observed between FPED and FROH. It is necessary to make decisions that stabilize the inbreeding rate in the long-term using optimal contribution selection based on the available SNP data.

Decision sets and decision lists are two of the most easily explainable machine learning models. Given the renewed emphasis on explainable machine learning decisions, both of these machine learning models are becoming increasingly attractive, as they combine small size and clear explainability. In this paper, we define size as the total number of literals in the SAT encoding of these rule-based models as opposed to earlier work that concentrates on the number of rules. In this paper, we develop approaches to computing minimum-size “perfect” decision sets and decision lists, which are perfectly accurate on the training data, and minimal in size, making use of modern SAT solving technology. We also provide a new method for determining optimal sparse alternatives, which trade off size and accuracy. The experiments in this paper demonstrate that the optimal decision sets computed by the SAT-based approach are comparable with the best heuristic methods, but much more succinct, and thus, more explainable. We contrast the size and test accuracy of optimal decisions lists versus optimal decision sets, as well as other state-of-the-art methods for determining optimal decision lists. Finally, we examine the size of average explanations generated by decision sets and decision lists.
