Drawing on a case study of newswriting, this article presents media linguistics as a subdiscipline of applied linguistics (AL), dealing with a distinctive field of language use. Language in the media is characterized by specific environments, functions, and structures. Medialinguistic research, however, tends to overcome disciplinary boundaries. In multidisciplinary collaboration, it accesses a wide range of knowledge generation and transformation methods. In interdisciplinary collaboration, it contributes precise analyses of situated linguistic activity to the development of empirically-grounded communication studies. In transdisciplinary collaboration, it tests these theories against reality and solves practical problems. The article first outlines such a practical problem (Section 1). After explaining key concepts of media lingustics (2), it focuses on the linguistics of newswriting (3) and four related research methods (4). Finally, it discusses how the value media linguistics can add to both theory and practice of language use and the media (5).

This paper develops a detailed case study of the Phillips Curve as it has evolved since Phillips classic work of 1958. An explicit narrative in the paper involves the evolution of the argument using economics and systems thinking, to develop underlying data generating models. These are shown to underpin the inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment in economics. The paper considers the political exigencies relating to the Great inflation of the 1970s and the Great Recession post 2008 in terms of interpretations of the Philips curve. The paper hypothesises that economic ideas have meaningful significance within the context of historical eras with concomitant political imperatives whence such notions become somnolent once crises have abated. This This historical narrative is implicit in the latest research reflections on Philips curves. A particularly useful finding is the relevance of systems thinking and systems dynamics to the interpretation of issues relating to aggregation problems in macroeconomics involving inflation and unemployment causal relationships. The paper concludes that seemingly moribund the Philips curve is alive may have been hibernating. Identifying the Phillips curve requires a wide range of variability of non-aggregative data streams. This allows the negative slope of the curve to be revealed, else the Philips curve slope is pushed towards the vertical plane. Endogenous central banking and inflation targeting intensifies this effect which is evident from a systems thinking /dynamics perspective.

This paper begins with a discussion and analysis of the relevance of work-based learning to contemporary education and training needs. It then briefly outlines changes in attitudes and approaches to higher education and training in the UK over the past few decades and highlights the new ‘learning partnership model’ (LPM) as one that offers great potential for the effective development of a wide range of skills. In this context, the authors present a detailed analytical case study of a European-funded Adapt-University for Industry project that sought to identify training needs and to provide guidance and advice on work-based learning opportunities for a variety of Scottish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Using Training Needs Analysis, the authors assess the difficulties as well as the opportunities inherent in such projects. The findings illustrate the heterogeneity of the SMEs' training and guidance requirements and highlight the importance of addressing the tension that exists between the different expectations of employers and employees in relation to training needs and benefits.

This paper discusses the theoretical aspects and relevance of the interdisciplinary approach in the pedagogical process. An interdisciplinary teaching aid for public relations, developed at Psychology and Pedagogy Department of SSTU, is considered to be a form of interdisciplinary connections formation in the process of bachelors training whose major is 42.03.01 Advertising and public relations. This study guide is a part of the educational complex for the courses Theory and Practice of Public Relations, Theory and Practice of the media, Fundamentals of communication theory and is supposed to be used as part of their practical training. Interdisciplinary potential of this training manual is that the content and didactic units of different disciplines complement each other, forming a single integral perception of the subject. In terms of developing competencies students acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills as well as perceive a continuity and consistency between the results of the planned development of the disciplines. Implementation benefits Bachelors 3rd year learning process and lets the students majoring in Advertising and public relations improve the level of training due to the accumulation of knowledge and skills from different disciplines to solve professional problems.

Research consistently demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. It has also become common for universities to encourage their faculty to engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research. However, there are several challenges and disincentives to this type of work. In this article, we draw on a single case study of a project employing interdisciplinary collaborative event ethnography (CEE) to demonstrate the benefits, challenges, and disincentives of this approach to research. We highlight the enhanced and nuanced outcomes achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration that would likely not have been achieved through an intradisciplinary approach to the research questions. The case study also highlights the challenges and disincentives associated with this research strategy, including longer work times, difficulty in publishing due to editorial and reviewer criticism about violating methods preferences or disciplinary boundaries, and issues related to publications outside of one’s field. We conclude with a call to enhance the incentives associated with interdisciplinary collaborative research.

The choice of words is one of important aspects in writing articles in printed media. Creative language use in lifestyle magazine may create interest for readers. The purpose of this research is to analyze the language use in sex articles in Cosmopolitan Indonesia. Launched in 1997, Cosmopolitan Indonesia is the first licensed Indonesian women lifestyle magazine and the first women magazine in Indonesia that openly discusses sex. This marks a change in Indonesian printed media. Before the publication of Cosmopolitan, sex and intimacy were only discussed in non-public spheres. Although the topics are discussed openly, the magazine uses special terms to describe man and women genital organs. After 22 years, Cosmopolitan Indonesia is still using the same terms in its sex articles, despite the fact that other women magazines are now discussing sex more openly and most of them are using the medical terms to describe genital organs. The focus of this research is mainly on what factors that consider Cosmopolitan Indonesia to use special terms in sex articles. The methodology will include purposive sampling interview and content analysis of 6 editions of Cosmopolitan Indonesia. The findings of this research may help the media and journalists to be more creative in choosing words for particular articles to attract readers interest, also to established the media unique identity, especially for lifestyle magazine. The territorial image is formed both purposefully by the subjects of image-making, and spontaneously-based on the influence of information content published in various media. The purpose of the research is to analyze the image of the Republic of Mordovia in the information space of the Volga Federal district. The image of the territory formed by external target audiences by means of news materials is studied using the method of case study and content analysis of publications: “Volga news”, “Federal Press” news of the PFD, “Pravda PFD”. The authors conclude that modern reality is perceived through the prism of the information field created by mass media. The media creates images filled with certain data, facts, colored by emotions, on the basis of which representations, opinions, judgments, and assessments are subsequently formed. The media play a significant role in shaping the territorial image, especially for external target audiences who are not familiar with the region and do not have their own assessment knowledge and experience. Most of the information content about the Republic in the studied media is related to the main thematic blocks: politics, economy, social sphere, culture (art, sports). Moreover, if in the publications “Volga news” and “Pravda PFD” mention of the region prevails in the economic block, then in the publications “Federal Press” and “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” - in the political one. The Volga news publication significantly dominates the rest in terms of the number of publications about Mordovia. The content of publications is mostly positive and neutral related to the issues of economic development of the territory and the preparation and holding of the world football championship. Pravda PFD mentions the Republic in the context of news from neighboring territories, most of the publications date back to 2018, but here the context is related to the Republic's positions among the regions of the PFD in various ratings. The publication “Federal-Press” forms a generally reflective image of the territory, focusing on the negative aspects of regional life. “Nezavisimaya Gazeta”, giving priority to political news, maintains a neutral and reflective context of publications, paying attention to the key problems of the territory. Thus, the desired image of the region is counter-dictated to the image broadcast by the media through various information channels, so it is necessary to constantly monitor the information space and timely correction of the broadcast materials.
