Reports are important genres in our culture and they have achieved some prominence in education. What it means to report and the way reporting is conceived in our culture can be revealed through semantic analysis. By looking at the meaning of the verb report, this paper will argue for a view of genre as a cultural activity and a view of literacy that involves children in the development of personal perspective. This approach argues against a text based view of genre and a pedagogy that relies primarily on the modelling of ‘considered texts’.

This essay describes the development of the Post-Zionist critique within Israeli society, from the late 1980s, when it first appeared in academic works, and follows its dissemination into other areas of cultural activity (theatre, newspapers, films, TV and radio). It assesses the overall impact of post-Zionism on Israeli society, with particular stress on the way the recent Intifada (begun in September 2000) has influenced its fortunes in Israel, and raised some fears for the immediate future.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse how the media addresses entrepreneurship and to identify the attributes linked to this phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach The sample is defined in terms of a linguistic corpus comprised of content related to entrepreneurship drawn from the digital editions of the three most important Spanish economic newspapers for the period 2010–2017. Word association and co-occurrence analyses were carried out. Further, a non-supervised clustering process was used as the basis for a thematic analysis. Findings Correspondence between social and media patterns related to the entrepreneurship phenomenon is revealed by the results. It is shown how attributes such as “success”, “innovation”, “ecosystem” and “woman” appear as very relevant and are linked to different co-occurrence scenarios. Relevant thematic groups are also identified related to lexical associations such as innovation, digital economy and public policies linked to entrepreneurship. Research limitations/implications It is important to emphasise that this study has identified and explored relationships between words, but not their evolution. Furthermore, conclusions cannot be drawn concerning whether there are differences in how each newspaper has dealt with entrepreneurship because of the way the corpus was constructed. Originality/value The study provides empirical evidence that helps to identify the way media approaches entrepreneurship. The authors carried out the analysis on the media contents and not on the perception of the public on the phenomenon.

The article introduces the results of a semantic analysis of Uku Masing's (1909– 1985) early poetry (1926–1943). The metres analyzed are syllabic-accentual trochaic tetrameter, trochaic pentameter, iambic pentameter and dactylic, logaoedic and polymetric hexameters. In each text the textual communicative perspective as well as motifs and tropes of each verse line were examined. The semantic differences and colourings of the metres are most evident in the way of expression, in the viewpoint.

AbstractThis paper presents a corpus-based study of recent change in the Englishway-construction, drawing on data from the 1830s to the 2000s. Semantic change in the distribution of the construction is characterized by means of a distributional semantic model, which captures semantic similarity between verbs through their co-occurrence frequency with other words in the corpus. By plotting and comparing the semantic domain of the three senses of the construction at different points in time, it is found that they all have gained in semantic diversity. These findings are interpreted in terms of increases in schematicity, either of the verb slot or the motion component contributed by the construction.

In this essay, I argue that teaching reading comprehension can be based on the read oneself reading’s view, which consists of reading a text at the same time that we read ourselves. In other words, we need to be aware, at all times, of the way we read texts and make meaning by taking responsibility for our own interpretations because both the writer and the reader are text producers. First, I begin by giving an example of how traditional ideals of reading do not include the plurality of ideas. I then explain how teaching through critical literacy can be used to reflect upon the identities of students, teachers and school community members in a classroom of English for speakers of other languages. I conclude by reaffirming the consequences of homogenizing readings and interpretations in addition to reflecting upon possible formative paths to the post-truth times we live in.

This article investigates the meaning and use of singular indefinite determiners in Swedish, in particular the way in which the existential determiner någon/något contrasts with the indefinite article en/ett in different contexts. The problem is approached from three different perspectives, the first being a contrastive Scandinavian perspective, where the Swedish data are reviewed in the light of contrastive data from the closely related languages Danish and Norwegian. Secondly, corpus data are used to substantiate the results of the contrastive analysis both quantitatively and qualitatively. The last section adopts a more theoretical perspective and tries to present a formal semantic analysis of the two determiners under study, drawing on typological work on indefinites and studies of the historical development of indefinite determiners.

This study aims to analyse the semantic features in fraudulent ads in Facebook. This study is conducted by using two kinds of advertisement which are found in Facebook. The researchers are analyzing the word, sentence, or phrase that suspected as the way to convince the customers by following theory of meaning from Leech (1981). The data that the researchers got showed that the first type of advertisement is emphasized more to the affective and social meaning where the seller leads the customers’ opinion that the seller is a good or trusted person. Moreover, the seller uses prase that include to conceptual meaning to explain the condition or specification of the cellphone in detail. In the second type of advertisement, the element emphasized by the seller is thematic mining by referring to the emphasis of the word used in the advertisement.More over, theresult for identification of fraudulent ads in this study is still dominated by the usual way, such as by looking at the price offered. However, the results of this study can also be used as a consideration in identifying fraudulent ads.

The series by Martiros Sarian "Tales and Dreams" fully corresponds to the art of the young generation of Russian Symbolism in terms of subject matter, pictorial language and aesthetic views. In the work of the artist of this period, there are “wandering” characters from one painting to another, recurring themes paving the way for various interpretations, and mysterious paintings. Such is "Comet", created in 1907. The key to the symbolism of this work is the semantic analysis of the characters of the gazelle and the one-eyed figure, which are central to the composition. Some notes by Sarian and comparisons with the symbolistic thinking of that time allow us to conclude that the gazelle bears a symbol of the Nature as a Creator, and the one-eyed hero is a Poet owning universal knowledge. The basis of "Comet" by Martiros Sarian is an inextricable link between Nature and Human being, it expresses the artist's love and respect for nature and, at the same time, faith in man.

Lexical functions (LF) model relations between terms in the lexicon. These relations can be knowledge about the world (Napoleon was an emperor) or knowledge about the language (<destiny> is synonym of <fate>). In this article, we show that LF instanciation in texts is useful both for semantic analysis (for example, resolution of lexical ambiguities or prepositional attachment and synthesis, i.e. natural language generation. We describe the architecture of a Semantic Lexical Base and the way how LFs are modeled, detected and used. More precisely, we show how each LF is modelled using thematic (conceptual vectors) and lexical (materialised relations between database objects) information and how we exploit the results in the base. We also describe how these functions allow the database to be explored continuously rather than in a discrete way.

CulturalNature Arga#2 is an interactive audio-visual installation intended to explore the concept of landscape as a verb (to landscape) questioning and reflecting about the semiotic discourses associated with this concept. The landscape as something natural, static, peaceful, silent, etc. is a semiotic discourse with roots in a past related with the representation of a point of view, not only perceptual but also conceptual, ideological. These representations informed the visual culture leading to a particular discourse. The installation proposes a reflexion about the way different elements associated with a particular territory shape this territory's landscape, giving it a dynamic existence, a product of cultural activity.
