Toward a Science of Qualities in Organizations

The development of complexity theory in the natural sciences is described, and summarized in six principles of complex emergent wholes. It is suggested that complexity theory is leading biology toward a science of qualities based on participation and intuition. It is argued on metaphorical and epistemological grounds that these principles which describe the emergence of complex wholes can be applied to social and organizational life. The six principles are then applied to qualitative and action research practice, with a particular reference to co-operative inquiry, in order to provide principles for good practice and theoretical support for the nature of valid inquiry processes.

The purpose of this research is to improve learning outcomes of natural sciences subjects through theapplication of cooperative learning model type example non example in class V SDN 003 Beringin Teluk. Theform of this research is classroom action research, with 22 subjects consisting of 10 men and 12 women. Basedon the results of the research cycle I the percentage of teacher activity amounted to 54.1% with sufficientcategories and increased in the second meeting to 62.5% with good categories. In the second cycle of the firstmeeting the percentage of teacher activity was 70.8% in the good category and at the second meeting increasedto 83.3% in the very good category. student activity by 50% with less categories and at the second meetingincreased to 58.3% with enough categories. In the second cycle the first meeting the percentage of studentactivity was 75% in the good category and increased in the second meeting to 87.5% in the very good category.student learning outcomes in the basic score of the presentation was 40.9%, after repeated daily cycle Iincreased to 63.6% and again increased in cycle II to 86.3%. Departing from the results of this action it can beconcluded that the application of cooperative learning model type example non examples can improve thelearning outcomes of Natural Sciences class V SDN 003 Beringin Teluk.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA) siswa dengan penerapan model pembelajaran picture and picture di kelas III Sekolah Dasar Negeri 004 Cendirejo Kecamatan Pasir Penyu. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas (Classroom Action Research) yang mencakup kegiatan perencanaan (planning), tindakan (action), observasi (observation), refleksi (reflection) atau evaluasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, dilihat dari skor dasar siswa yang tuntas sebesar 13 orang dengan persentase 46%. Setelah dilakukan perbaikan pada siklus I, hasil belajar siswa meningkat, hal ini dibuktikan dengan siswa yang tuntas sebesar 20 orang atau 71%. Sedangkan pada siklus II, hasil belajar siswa kembali meningkat menjadi 28 orang siswa yang tuntas dengan persentase 100%. Dari analisis hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa dengan menerapkan model pemebelajaran Picture and Picture dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar IPA siswa kelas II SDN 004 Cendirejo Kecamatan Pasir Penyu Kabupaten Indragiri Hulu.Kata kunci: model picture and picture, hasil belajar IPA. ABSTRACTThis study aims to improve student learning outcomes with the application of a picture and picture learning model in class III 004 Cendirejo Public Primary School Pasir Penyu District. After making improvements in the first cycle, student learning outcomes increase, this is evidenced by students who complete by 20 people or 71%. While in the second cycle, student learning outcomes again increased to 28 students who completed a percentage of 100%. From the analysis of the results of this study it can be concluded that by applying the Picture and Picture learning model can improve the learning outcomes of Natural Sciences class II 004 Public Primary School Cendirejo Pasir Penyu District Indragiri Hulu.Keywords: model picture and picture, learning outcomes of Natural Sciences.

This article presents a reflection on a body of creative work carried out during four years of Ph.D. research that explored the relationship between complexity theory and music. The article highlights conceptual problems that arose during the creation of the work, especially those associated with the exploration of scientific models for the creation of art. The author does not attempt to offer any final solutions but rather presents the journey undertaken through the combined artistic and research practice as a way of documenting the strategies he developed during this period of creative practice.

The ethical regulation of social research in the UK has been steadily increasing over the last decade or so and comprises a form of audit to which all researchers in Higher Education are subject. Concerns have been raised by social researchers using visual methods that such ethical scrutiny and regulation will place severe limitations on visual research developments and practice. This paper draws on a qualitative study of social researchers using visual methods in the UK. The study explored their views, the challenges they face and the practices they adopt in relation to processes of ethical review. Researchers reflected on the variety of strategies they adopted for managing the ethical approval process in relation to visual research. For some this meant explicitly ‘making the case’ for undertaking visual research, notwithstanding the ethical challenges, while for others it involved ‘normalising’ visual methods in ways which delimited the possible ethical dilemmas of visual approaches. Researchers only rarely identified significant barriers to conducting visual research from ethical approval processes, though skilful negotiation and actively managing the system was often required. Nevertheless, the climate of increasing ethical regulation is identified as having a potential detrimental effect on visual research practice and development, in some instances leading to subtle but significant self-censorship in the dissemination of findings.

Chaos and complexity theory has been used in the study of the natural sciences for over thirty years. Throughout the years, experts from various fields have used it as a new way to view the world around them, including its applications to the field of education and subsystems within the education system. However very few studies have been conducted on the application of chaos theory to classroom discipline. The field of classroom discipline, like the natural world, can also be observed from this perspective because it exhibits many features of chaotic/complex systems. Classrooms are often described as complex, dynamic and unpredictable environments. This makes it difficult for teachers to understand and manage classroom discipline. This paper explores the complexity of classroom discipline and how the principles of chaos and complexity theory reflect on classroom discipline. This would help inform management strategies and alternatives that would in turn enhance and improve student academic achievement and overall performance.
