Although some studies have focused on immigrants’ fear of crime in the United States, it is important to point out that the number of North Korean defectors to South Korea has rapidly increased since the 1990s. Therefore, understanding factors associated with fear of crime for North Korean immigrants, especially female defectors, is important for ensuring their successful transitions into South Korean culture. The present study used existing survey data from a sample of female North Korean defectors to explore factors related to fear of crime. Results indicate that the number of North Korean friends, language proficiency, and patriarchal attitudes toward gender were significant predictors of fear of crime for the North Korean female defectors. Findings are described and discussed as a potential source for policymaking to reduce North Korean immigrants’ acculturative stress and fear of crime and to encourage smooth transitions into new cultures.

Segmentation of skin lesions is a challenging task because of the wide range of skin lesion shapes, sizes, colors, and texture types. In the past few years, deep learning networks such as U-Net have been successfully applied to medical image segmentation and exhibited faster and more accurate performance. In this paper, we propose an extended version of U-Net for the segmentation of skin lesions using the concept of the triple attention mechanism. We first selected regions using attention coefficients computed by the attention gate and contextual information. Second, a dual attention decoding module consisting of spatial attention and channel attention was used to capture the spatial correlation between features and improve segmentation performance. The combination of the three attentional mechanisms helped the network to focus on a more relevant field of view of the target. The proposed model was evaluated using three datasets, ISIC-2016, ISIC-2017, and PH2. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of our method with strong robustness to the presence of irregular borders, lesion and skin smooth transitions, noise, and artifacts.

Researchers note that the transitions of secondary students with disability in and out of the juvenile justice system are problematic for both the young person and leadership teams of their sending and receiving schools. Much of the literature focuses on barriers to successful transitions; however, there are some accounts of positive transition practices. In this article, we identify these positive practices and outline the steps school principals and executives involved in transitioning secondary school students with disability in and out of juvenile justice settings can take to smooth the way and improve student outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop an online smoothing zero-velocity-update (ZUPT) method that helps achieve smooth estimation of human foot motion for the ZUPT-aided inertial pedestrian navigation system. Design/methodology/approach – The smoothing ZUPT is based on a Rauch–Tung–Striebel (RTS) smoother, using a six-state Kalman filter (KF) as the forward filter. The KF acts as an indirect filter, which allows the sensor measurement error and position error to be excluded from the error state vector, so as to reduce the modeling error and computational cost. A threshold-based strategy is exploited to verify the detected ZUPT periods, with the threshold parameter determined by a clustering algorithm. A quantitative index is proposed to give a smoothness estimate of the position data. Findings – Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the smoothness, robustness, efficiency and accuracy of pedestrian navigation. Research limitations/implications – Because of the chosen smoothing algorithm, a delay no longer than one gait cycle is introduced. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for applications with soft real-time constraints. Practical implications – The paper includes implications for the smooth estimation of most types of pedal locomotion that are achieved by legged motion, by using a sole foot-mounted commercial-grade inertial sensor. Originality/value – This paper helps realize smooth transitions between swing and stance phases, helps enable continuous correction of navigation errors during the whole gait cycle, helps achieve robust detection of gait phases and, more importantly, requires lower computational cost.
