Marine isopods, despite being a very diverse group, have been little studied in the Mexican South Pacific. After a revision of 171 specimens collected from Guerrero and Oaxaca, six new species, belonging to five genera, were discovered: Amakusanthura guerrerensis sp. nov., Cortezura caeca sp. nov., Mesanthura antenniformis sp. nov., M. estacahuitensis sp. nov., Skuphonura oaxaquensis sp. nov., and Tinggianthura mexicana sp. nov. In this work, the genera Amakusanthura Nunomura, 1977 and Tinggianthura Chew, Abdul-Rahim & Haji Ross, 2014, are recorded for the first time in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. Also, the distribution range of the genus Skuphonura Barnard, 1925 is increased from the west coast of South America to the southern Mexican Pacific, this being the first record of this genus in the Mexican Pacific. This study doubles the number of species recorded of Anthuridae from the Mexican Pacific, of six to 12 species.

AbstractLush ‘oases’ of life seen in chemosynthetic ecosystems such as hot vents and cold seeps represent rare, localized exceptions to the generally oligotrophic deep ocean floor. Organic falls, best known from sunken wood and whale carcasses, are additional sources of such oases. Kemp Caldera (59°42'S, 28°20'W) in the Weddell Sea exhibits active hydrothermal vents and a natural whale fall in close proximity, where an undescribed cocculinid limpet was found living in both types of chemosynthetic habitats. This represents the first member of the gastropod order Cocculinida discovered from hot vents, and also the first record from the Southern Ocean. Here, we applied an integrative taxonomy framework incorporating traditional dissection, electron microscopy, genetic sequencing and 3D anatomical reconstruction through synchrotron computed tomography in order to characterize this species. Together, our data revealed an unusual member of the genus Cocculina with a highly modified radula for feeding on bacterial film, described herein as Cocculina enigmadonta n. sp. Its phylogenetically derived position within the largely wood-inhabiting Cocculina indicates that it probably evolved from an ancestor adapted to living on sunken wood, providing a compelling case of the ‘stepping stone’ evolutionary trajectory from organic falls to seeps and vents.

This paper reports seven species of opisthobranchs from the intertidal zone of the south Saurashtra coastline off the Arabian Sea, Kathiawar Peninsula, west coast of India. Field surveys were undertaken along the intertidal zones of south Saurashtra coast during 2012–2014. In this study, seven species belonging to six families were recorded, of whichHaminoea ovalis, Flabellina bicolor, Phidiana militaris, Baeolidia palythoaeandSakuraeolis gujaraticaare new records from this coastline.

SummaryThe aim of this investigation was to identify the parasites present in the largely understudied pleasure oyster Crassostrea corteziensis in Sinaloa state in the northwestern Mexican Pacific coast. Inspection of twenty-eight oysters collected on “Ceuta” lagoon revealed the presence of the digenean Stephanostomum sp. (Digenea: Acanthocolpidae) cysts. Metacercariae were found encapsulated and embedded in the digestive gland and mantle tissue of oysters. The prevalence of infection revealed that 84.6 % were infected, the abundance was 13.62, with a mean intensity of 16.09 per host. The members of this genus are characterized by a double crown of spines in the cephalic region surrounding the buccal opening of the worm. Significantly, we report the first incidence of the digenean Stephanostomum sp of the family Acanthocolpidae parasitizing Crassostrea corteziensis. Further we report that this bivalve is now considered a new intermediate host, and the northwestern Mexican Pacific coast is a new geographical distribution area for this digenean. The findings contribute to our understanding of the biology, biodiversity and host preference of these parasites, with implications for health risks posed by human consumption of the pleasure oyster.

The benthic ctenophore Vallicula multiformis Rankin, 1956 is recorded for the first time in the Arabian Sea, from the Gulf of Kutch, west coast of India in March 2013. This occurrence represents a remarkable extension of its geographic distribution that until now included only known the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

The first record of transgenic cotton cultivation in Brazil was in 2005, of that of the cultivar MON 531, possessing the cry1Ac gene. Since then, no evaluation has been performed to understand whether the cultivation of Bt cotton has caused any interference with the soil microbiota, including bacteria. In this context, our research was aimed to assess whether the cultivation of Bt cotton negatively affects the community of soil bacteria, through quantitative and metagenomic analyses (marker gene 16S rRNA) for phylum identification. Samples of bacterial populations obtained from the soil cultivated with Bt cotton expressing the Cry1Ac toxin were compared with soil samples from the area cultivated with conventional cotton. Significant differences were not observed in the measure of colony-forming units of bacteria between the soils cultivated with Bt and non-Bt cotton; however, differences were detected only when comparing samples from different collection times of the Bt treatment. Cultivation of Bt cotton did not affect the diversity of the soil bacterial population. Overall, our study shows that, similar to most of the works that have been reported worldwide, cultivation of transgenic cotton does not seem to affect the quantity and diversity of natural soil bacteria.

The genus Smacigastes Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004 (Harpacticoida, Copepoda) is the most primitive genus in the family Tegastidae Sars, 1904, occurring in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls and wood falls. Our exploration of the Onnuri Vent Field, the sixth active hydrothermal vent system in the Central Indian Ridge, resulted in the discovery of a new species in the genus Smacigastes. A detailed morphological analysis of S. pumilasp. nov. reveals that it most resembles S. barti Gollner, Ivanenko & Martínez Arbizu, 2008, described from a hydrothermal vent in the East Pacific Ridge; the new species can be distinguished from the existing species by the 8-segmented female antennule, the absence of an abexopodal seta on the antennary basis, the mandibular exopod represented by a single seta and the exopod of the first leg with five setae. This is the first record of Smacigastes in the Indian Ocean. A dichotomous key to species of the genus Smacigastes worldwide is provided.
