Changing Landscape and Oral Memory in South-Central Zimbabwe: Towards a Historical Geography of Chishanga, c. 1850-1990* This paper is based on my current research on the history of the same area. I am deeply indebted to the Sida/SAREC grant, which financed the project as well as to discussions I have had on earlier versions of this paper with Terence Ranger and Gilbert Pwiti. I am also grateful to Chief Mapanzure, Mr Mapope Tavarera, Mr Raphael Manyoka Gwenhamo, and Mr Kokerai Chikozho who welcomed and cooperated with me on issues that have greatly affected the scope of this paper. This paper benefited immensely from the mentorship of my late father, Tungamirayi Mazarire, who died as I was writing it and did not live to see the fruits of his efforts. It is to him that I dedicate it.
