This collection of essays, drawn from a three-year AHRC research project, provides a detailed context for the history of early cinema in Scotland from its inception in 1896 till the arrival of sound in the early 1930s. It details the movement from travelling fairground shows to the establishment of permanent cinemas, and from variety and live entertainment to the dominance of the feature film. It addresses the promotion of cinema as a socially ‘useful’ entertainment, and, distinctively, it considers the early development of cinema in small towns as well as in larger cities. Using local newspapers and other archive sources, it details the evolution and the diversity of the social experience of cinema, both for picture goers and for cinema staff. In production, it examines the early attempts to establish a feature film production sector, with a detailed production history of Rob Roy (United Films, 1911), and it records the importance, both for exhibition and for social history, of ‘local topicals’. It considers the popularity of Scotland as an imaginary location for European and American films, drawing their popularity from the international audience for writers such as Walter Scott and J.M. Barrie and the ubiquity of Scottish popular song. The book concludes with a consideration of the arrival of sound in Scittish cinemas. As an afterpiece, it offers an annotated filmography of Scottish-themed feature films from 1896 to 1927, drawing evidence from synopses and reviews in contemporary trade journals.

The article analyzes the activities of libraries and village reading-rooms in the Mari village during the Great Patriotic War. It describes the changes in libraries’ work at the beginning of the war, forms and methods of cultural and educational work. Special attention is paid to lectures, talks, newspapers and news briefs of the Soviet Information Bureau, conferences, literary evenings, collective radio programmers hearings, stands with central and local newspapers and help to the front. The article also considers the work with the rural youth and the organization of mobile libraries.

Tinjauan kritis dari tulisan ini memberikan kritisi dimaksudkan untuk melihat kekurangan dari artikel ilmiah yang berjudul Pengembangan dan Evaluasi Formatif Studi kasus Multimedia untuk Siswa Desain dan Teknology Pembelajaran.  Tinjauan kritis yang dilakukan diungkapkan dengan sepenuhnya mengacu pada teori dan fakta buku-buku referensi dan jurnal ilmiah yang relevan. Hasil tinjauan kritis memperlihatkan beberapa kelemahan dari artikel ilmiah tersebut, diantaranya adalah:  artikel tersebut terpaku pada desain pembelajaran dan produksi multimedia, dan tidak ada acuan model atau pendekatan sistem desain pembelajaran, sehingga terjadi bias. Padahal setiap pengembangan pembelajaran (Instructional Development) sama artinya dengan mengembangkan model pembelajaran yang ada meliputi proses  perencanaan, pemilihan strategi pembelajaran, pemilihan media, dan pemilihan/pembuatan bahan, dan evaluasi. Penulis artikel ilmiah tersebut tidak melihat bahwa selain desain pembelajaran dan produksi multimedia ada satu hal penting lagi yang harus dilihat adalah permintaan khusus dari klien atau sama artinya dengan kebutuhan yang ingin dicapai pada desain/rancangan multimedia/produksi multimedia. Penulis artikel ilmiah tersebut seakan-akan desain pembelajaran dan produksi multimedia sebagai dua bagian yang berdiri sendiri, padahal merupakan satu kesatuan yang tak terpisahkan jika didasarkan pada pada berbagai model desain dan implementasi model multimedia yang dikenalkan oleh berbagai ahli, misalnya pada  model pembelajaran ADDIE, Dick & Carey, Minerva, dan AT & T Instructional Development produksi multimedia adalah bagian dari perancangan pembelajaran/desain pembelajaran; kegiatan desain pembelajaran dan/atau produksi multimedia; hanya satu tema media yang muncul yaitu: penggunaan video (video use), padahal komponen  multimedia terdiri dari teks, audio, visual (gambar, foto, grafik), dan video.

Introduction. There has been limited discussion on Open Monograph Press (OMP) although its  potential is recognized to support academic publications in Indonesia. This is due to the lack of access to information and dissemination of OMP by academic publishers that have implemented OMP in their publication process. Data Collection Method. This paper used a qualitative approach by starting the elaboration publication process in Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) Press. This paper examined how OMP-based online publishing system is able to accommodate book publishing process in LIPI Press. Primary data in this study was collected through records of the user interface of the online page of LIPI Press which uses OMP. Data Analysis. The data was analyzed by using  a descriptive-analytic approach. Results and Discussions. OMP is useful not only to accommodate all roles and processes of scientific publication but also to accommodate the publisher's need for a catalog website. OMP metadata can be indexed by Google Scholar and can be a helpful tool for product distribution. Conclusion. OMP is suggested to become a standard in publication process.

Beginning around 1860, authors in the Egyptian capital portrayed Cairo’s changing cityscape and the recent emergence of local newspapers in terms of their impact on rationality (‘aql). In their descriptions, these contemporaries depicted rationality as an education of the heart that especially enabled men from the middle class to control their bodies and passions. The chapter shows that Cairo’s transformation was, however, not always associated with rising rationality by drawing on a different set of sources. Police and court records from the 1860s and 1870s demonstrate that contemporaries also described processes of urban change as a danger to the “honor” of lower-class women. Like the debates in Berlin, emotional practices in Cairo thus served as a way to address the social formation of the Egyptian capital during a time of dynamic transformation.

Taking the Yokohama Chinese community as an exemplary case, this article delves into linkages between Chinese diasporic identities and collaborationism during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). Using published memoirs, Japanese government and police records, and local newspapers, it examines the wartime experiences of a community struggling to maintain both its Chinese identity and its position in local society. Japanese authorities did not categorically assimilate, intern, or deport this population. Instead, they enforced displays of support for collaborationist regimes in occupied China in order to manufacture what they termed “Sino-Japanese amity.” Public expressions by the Yokohama Chinese contributed to this narrative, but these Chinese were not merely puppets. They actively negotiated the meanings and practices of collaborationism to fulfill local needs. By examining their engagement with Chinese and Japanese national imperatives, this article reflects on the nature of Sino-Japanese friendship, hidden resistance, and local integration.

Online delivery of content has changed media advertising markets, undermining the business model which has underpinned provision of ‘public media’. Three business models have sustained mass media: direct payment for content, payment for advertising and state subsidy, and the author argues, contrary to others’ claims, that advertising finance has made possible production and provision of high-quality, pluralistic and affordable public media. In consequence, substitution of the internet as an advertising medium has undermined the system of finance which, in the UK and societies like it, sustained public media. Global advertising revenues have both fallen and been redistributed, though to differing degrees in different countries, with particularly deleterious effects on local newspapers. Prices have risen, original content production has fallen and reversion to a direct payment-for-content business model is pervasive. And this despite the growth of new entrant online media and established publicly funded media (notably public service broadcasters) resulting in the likelihood of a continued general worsening of affordable and pervasive access to high-quality and diverse public media.

Abstract Social plugins for sharing news through Facebook and Twitter have become increasingly salient features on news sites. Together with the user comment feature, social plugins are the most common way for users to contribute. The wide use of multiple features has opened new areas to comprehensively study users’ participatory practices. However, how do these opportunities to participate vary between the participatory spaces that news sites affiliated with local, national broadsheet and tabloid news constitute? How are these opportunities appropriated by users in terms of participatory practices such as commenting and sharing news through Facebook and Twitter? In addition, what differences are there between news sites in these respects? To answer these questions, a quantitative content analysis has been conducted on 3,444 articles from nine Swedish online newspapers. Local newspapers are more likely to allow users to comment on articles than are national newspapers. Tweeting news is appropriated only on news sites affiliated with evening tabloids and national morning newspapers. Sharing news through Facebook is 20 times more common than tweeting news or commenting. The majority of news items do not attract any user interaction.
