In September 2010 members of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) participated in a patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) pilot to determine how this purchasing model might be adapted to a consortium. OCUL understood that developing a model that would allow patrons to purchase titles for different collections would be complicated. Careful thought went into balancing the needs of individual members with the needs of the consortium. This paper describes the project and examines the results from three distinct perspectives in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of PDA at a consortial level.

With the development of big data, all walks of life in society have begun to venture into big data to serve their own enterprises and departments. Big data has been embraced by university digital libraries. The most cumbersome work for the management of university libraries is document retrieval. This article uses Hadoop algorithm to extract semantic keywords and then calculates semantic similarity based on the literature retrieval keyword calculation process. The fast-matching method is used to determine the weight of each keyword, so as to ensure an efficient and accurate document retrieval in digital libraries, thus completing the design of the document retrieval method for university digital libraries based on Hadoop technology.

The rapid technological development of the 21st century brought with it the rise of the digital library, which has become a global trend in university libraries. This chapter examines the construction and development of university digital libraries in western China. By investigating the current samples, consisting of 100 universities in the region, we try to reveal problems which arise during the construction process and discuss the future directions of university digital libraries in western China.

The attitude of librarians in Nigerian university libraries has the potential to encourage or discourage digital libraries in e-learning. This paper addresses and discusses the attitudes of librarians towards digital library in e-learning, the imperativeness of training and knowledge for effective functionality of digital libraries in Nigerian universities. The paper uses the descriptive survey method to explore the attitudes of librarians towards digital libraries, advantages of digital libraries, and the types of e-learning that can be supported by digital libraries. It was discovered that training and knowledge are sine qua non of a positive attitude towards digital libraries in e-learning. And there was a high interest in the use of online information by researchers and learners but lack of awareness and how best to integrate e-learning resources into digital libraries pose a great challenge to the librarians in Nigerian universities.

This paper explores the challenges and opportunities presented by mobile applications in the context of an academic library collection. This emerging format raises important questions about selection, acquisition, access, instruction, outreach, and evaluation as these practices have been applied to traditional resources. A more nuanced understanding of the content and format of mobile applications informs a collection development strategy for discovering, acquiring, and maintaining these resources. The development of an outreach program that includes liaison activity, instruction, and research consultations is also explored as a way to drive users to these new resources. Using Stony Brook University Libraries as a case study, this paper discusses the potential of mobile applications as academic library resources plus practical ways to promote usage and enhance academic engagement.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to clarify the digital era and to explain that these changes have given rise to the existence of several communities or consortia in higher education of Algeria in order to bring users closer. Various changes linked to advancement in information technologies have changed work methods and behavior among professionals in the information and communication sciences field. Design/methodology/approach – The paper opted for a survey which was organized into two principal phases. An exploratory phase that consisted of undertaking qualitative interviews and another phase followed by a preliminary survey (pilot study) to prepare for the definitive survey. In this way that the authors chose a sample of a total of 50 questionnaires. The authors succeeded in obtaining a total of 30 respondents, representing a response rate of 60 percent. Findings – The preliminary survey reveals that the Algerian university libraries wish to create a community of exchange and collaborative work between professional colleagues in this new digital age. Research limitations/implications – This study is a beginning of a research on the behaviors of professionals in Algerian university libraries. A national survey is about to be performed in order to analyze more better the new communication behaviors. Practical implications – The paper includes implications for changing the new behavior of professionals in university libraries in order to be adapted in this new digital age that requires us to work in the library without walls. Originality/value – The originality of this paper is to discuss the subject of the digital libraries, the information retrieval and the collaborative work environments and the Semantic Web.
