The potential of the Internet as a valuable methodological tool for social science research is increasingly being recognised. This paper contributes to the debate surrounding virtual synchronous interviews and the value of online research. Specifically it introduces the use of a software conferencing technique - Hotline Connect - and discusses the implications of using the technique for Internet- based research. In particular issues of interview design, developing rapport, the role of insiders and outsiders in the research process, language use and the virtual interface are considered. The paper draws on the experience of a recent research project entitled ‘Cyberparents’ and concludes that the use of conferencing software holds great potential for synchronous online interviewing. However, this must be combined with sensitive, ethical handling of both the research process and the data to overcome both the weaknesses of this particular method and those inherent in any interviewing situation.

The internet is conceivably today's most innovative development as it proceeds to change everyday life for almost everyone globally. Billions of individuals are using the internet, and thousands enter the online world each day. Not merely has the internet revolutionized the way people connect and learn; it has eternally changed the way people live across the globe. As the internet and computer advances, offenders have originated ways to utilize these innovations as intended for their criminal acts. In social science research, social theories are of great significance. Without a theoretical direction, social facts are like a snuffed-out candle that cannot determine its bearer's path. Social theories contribute to the development of sound scientific foundations for resolving issues in any social inquiry. Theories guide our observations of the world. Digital technology has an impact and has numerous challenges. The respective work has its significance in helping and exploring this dilemma via a multifaceted theoretical approach.

Rapid advancement of the Internet and Internet of Things have led to companies generating gigantic volumes of data in every field of business. Big data research has thus become one of the most prominent topic of discussion garnering simultaneous attention from academia and industry. This paper attempts to understand the significance of big data in current scientific research and outline its unique characteristics, otherwise unavailable from traditional data sources. We focus on how big data has altered the scope and dimension of data science thus making it severely interdisciplinary. We further discuss the significance and opportunities of big data in the domain of social science research with a scrutiny of the challenges previously faced while using smaller datasets. Given the extensive utilization of big data analytics in all forms of socio-technical research, we argue the need to critically interrogate its assumptions and biases; thereby advocating the need for creating a just and ethical big data world.
