Negative impacts from the dominant use of petroleum-based transportation have propelled the globe towards electrified transportation. With this thrust, many technological challenges are being encountered and addressed, one of which is the development and availability of fast-charging technologies. To compete with petroleum-based transportation, electric vehicle (EV) battery charging times need to decrease to the 5–10 min range. This paper provides a review of EV fast-charging technologies and the impacts on the battery systems, including heat management and associated limitations. In addition, the paper presents promising new approaches and opportunities for power electronic converter topologies and systems level research to advance the state-of-the-art in fast-charging.

Increasing power demands require multiple generating units interconnected with each other to maintain the power balance of the system. This results in a highly dense power system consisting of multiple generating units which coordinate with each other to maintain the balanced performance of the system. Among different energy sources, the thermal source, the hydro energy source, the photovoltaic system, and the wind energy source are the most popular ones. Researchers have developed several optimization problems in the literature known as dispatch problems to model the system consisting of these different types of energy sources. The constraints for each system depend upon the generation type and the nature of the objective functions involved. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of different dispatch problems and the nature of the objective functions involved in them and highlights the major constraints associated with each optimization function.

The hybrid renewable energy system is a promising and significant technology for clean and sustainable island power supply. Among the abundant ocean energy sources, tidal current energy appears to be very valuable due to its excellent predictability and stability, particularly compared with the intermittent wind and solar energy. In this paper, an island hybrid energy microgrid composed of photovoltaic, wind, tidal current, battery and diesel is constructed according to the actual energy sources. A sizing optimization method based on improved multi-objective grey wolf optimizer (IMOGWO) is presented to optimize the hybrid energy system. The proposed method is applied to determine the optimal system size, which is a multi-objective problem including the minimization of annualized cost of system (CACS) and deficiency of power supply probability (DPSP). MATLAB software is utilized to program and simulate the hybrid energy system. Optimization results confirm that IMOGWO is feasible to optimally size the system, and the energy management strategy effectively matches the requirements of system operation. Furthermore, comparison of hybrid systems with and without tidal current turbines is undertaken to confirm that the utilization of tidal current turbines can contribute to enhancing system reliability and reducing system investment, especially in areas with abundant tidal energy sources.
