Abstract A few international standards regulate the use of the high strength concrete, which may not be adopted generally without consideration of the differences that can be among the materials in different countries. This paper presents the results of an experimental study consisting of pull out tests of Brazilian steel, with five different concrete strengths, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 MPa, and three different steel bar diameters, 16.0, 20.0 and 25.0 mm. The experimental results for the bond stress vs. slipping relationship were compared with the provisions of the CEB and with some theoretical formulations found in literature. One statistical analysis is made and equations for predicting the bond stress were derived.

Processing of nickel-based high strength composites and alloys is a difficult and thought-provoking task. In this work, a strategy of heating through microwaves radiation is utilized to process the high strength hybrid Ni-based composite clad on SS 316L steel surface containing 15% (WC-8Co) and 5% Mo. The premixed composite powder was placed on the steel surface and irradiated with domestic microwave applicator having 2.45 GHz fixed frequency and 900 W power. The hybrid clad was successfully developed within 12–15 min of microwave exposure. The processed clad was subjected to various metallurgical and mechanical characterizations to understand the microstructures and phase changes. Microstructural analysis study revealed that the clad of ∼0.85 mm thickness was obtained and presence of dispersed reinforced particles of WC-8Co and Mo in nickel matrix were observed. Some inter-metallic phases of W2C, Ni2Mo4C, Ni4W and NiSi2 were observed in the clad. The average microhardness of the composite clad was712 ± 58 HV. The microwave processed clad exhibited a flexural strength of 852 ± 6 MPa with deformation index of 35 × 10−5 mm/N. Further, the sliding wear study revealed that the sliding velocity of 1.0 m/s favoured the formation of oxide tribo layers. The various mechanisms of wear revealed by the analysis of worn-out surfaces were abrasion, adhesion, surface pull-out and deformation of surfaces. The microwave processed clad revealed significant improvement in wear resistance in comparison to the steel substrate.

Resistance spot welded 1.2 mm (t)-thick 1400 MPa martensitic steel (MS1400) samples are fabricated and their microstructure, mechanical properties are investigated thoroughly. The mechanical performance and failure modes exhibit a strong dependence on weld-nugget size. The pull-out failure mode for MS1400 steel resistance spot welds does not follow the conventional weld-nugget size recommendation criteria of 4t0.5. Significant softening was observed due to dual phase microstructure of ferrite and martensite in the inter-critical heat affected zone (HAZ) and tempered martensite (TM) structure in sub-critical HAZ. However, the upper-critical HAZ exhibits obvious higher hardness than the nugget zone (NZ). In addition, the mechanical properties show that the cross-tension strength (CTS) is about one quarter of the tension-shear strength (TSS) of MS1400 weld joints, whilst the absorbed energy of cross-tension and tension-shear are almost identical.

This article describes an experimental program developed to study the influence of longitudinal prestress on the behaviour of high-strength concrete hollow beams under pure torsion. The pre-cracking, the post-cracking and the ultimate behaviour are analysed. Three tests were carried out on large hollow high-strength concrete beams with similar concrete strength. The variable studied was the level of longitudinal uniform prestress. Some important conclusions on different aspects of the beams’ behaviour are presented. These conclusions, considered important for the design of box bridges, include the influence of the level of prestress in the cracking and ultimate behaviour.
