Previous studies have revealed that when video gamers, or users of three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds, display intense concentration coupled with an emotional engagement in their undertaking, they are affected by multisensory stimuli. This can lead to developing a feeling of detachment from the physical world, which, in turn, can lead to high levels of participation and engagement. Notwithstanding these results, it remains unclear as to whether students can experience the same kind of immersion in two-dimensional (2D) platform-based online collaborative learning spaces as has been achieved in video games and 3D worlds and, if they actually can, which features would lead to similar levels of increased engagement. This study is one of the first attempts to investigate the immersion experiences of students engaged in two 2D online collaborative learning platforms, one text-based and the other video-based. Data from eight students revealed that key features of immersion observed in video games and 3D worlds also appeared during the online collaborative activities but that the way such immersion was perceived by the students was greatly affected by the characteristics of the individual platform. When emotional engagement was considered, empathy was found to play an important role in the participants’ immersion experiences. Implications for practice or policy: Text-based platforms could be effective in motivating students to focus more on the postings, while video-based platforms may be more effective in generating empathy with others through observation of body language. When selecting a communication platform for online collaboration, sensory stimuli of the platform should be carefully examined. Empathy could be developed prior to an online collaborative activity so that students reflect on their thoughts and consider others’ feelings for a more immersive learning experience.

This chapter tackles the issue of how it is possible to integrate individual differences in the learning design of Web-based collaborative learning experiences. In particular, in online collaborative learning environments, it is quite common to adopt techniques to support collaboration and interactions among peers. This contribution proposes to monitor the enactment of the collaborative techniques to make individual and group differences emerge, thus allowing the consequent customization of the learning experience. To this aim, a monitoring model is proposed, whose flexibility allows the tutor to bring different aspects and different levels of the ongoing learning process under control.

The teaching world is shifting towards the creation of collaborative knowledge. This study proposes a tool to examine willingness to engage in collaborative learning: a valid and reliable questionnaire based on Cognitive Orientation theory. Factor analysis yielded four factors affecting willingness to engage in collaborative learning: difficulties, benefits, promoting individuals’ interests, and the ability to rely on others. Significant differences were found in the willingness to collaborate in regard to the difference between each of these factors as actually experienced and its ideal. These differences were also evident in the qualitative genre analyzed according to the Theory of Personality.

AbstractIn March 2020, universities in China transitioned to online education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and intensified the focus on collaboration in online learning. However, little is known about the impact of undertaking online collaborative learning (OCL) on student teachers’ views about the process and about their own teaching and learning. This qualitative study examined 18 student teachers’ views about their experience of OCL and the way it affected them as learners and future teachers. The participants reported that OCL helped them develop varied views of learning and had a positive effect on their views about the future use of OCL. They saw their personal experience of OCL as an important aspect of their development as teachers. These findings highlight ways that online learning can shape the views and professionalism of student teachers. Future teacher training programs can provide OCL as a teaching experience at an early stage to help transform student teachers’ self-understanding from that of a student to that of a teacher. The findings of this study further reveal that online collaborative teacher training offers student teachers an opportunity to collaborate, discuss, and reflect on their professional development as teachers. This encourages teacher educators to reconsider how new forms of practice and teaching theories can be woven together more effectively in post-COVID teacher training.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the three learning styles (collaborative, competitive, and individualistic) on the perceived advantage of collaborative learning (PAoCL) and practical knowledge in teaching (PKiT) among Taiwanese student teachers in an online collaborative environment. This study built a Facebook Group and developed the tasks of collaborative learning based on field-experience courses. The participants were required to share various practical experiences as the collaborative learning tasks. A total of 100 student teachers who enrolled in field-based courses between August 2016 and January 2017 participated in this study and were required to complete a validated survey in January 2017. This study determined the relationships between the three learning styles and PAoCL and PKiT and further identified predictors of online collaborative learning. The collaborative learning style of student teachers was positively associated with their PAoCL, while competitive learning style was correlated with their PKiT. Accordingly, teacher educators can encourage student teachers to share experiences about teaching practices during participating in field-experience courses through online collaboration. However, teacher educators should remind the student teachers to transfer the online information into PKiT.

The majority of research and literature in collaborative learning online has been focussed on groups of students organised into units of study by an educational institution. There are, however, large numbers of adult students for whom participation in institutionally controlled online collaborative learning occurs side by side with participation in situated learning contexts such as their work or their community. This chapter draws on research conducted by the authors with adult learners who participate in communities of practice and communities of learning in their own work or life contexts, and provides insights into how these outside-institution learning environments can be used in a more deliberate blending to enhance student learning experience.

This case study was designed to investigate students’ perceptions and experiences of the dynamics of online collaborative learning over a semester. Multiple sources of data were collected and triangulated through pre- and post-surveys, personal interviews, group reflection papers, and instructor’s observations. Forty-one graduate students enrolled in the same course with the same instructor in two different learning environments – web-based and web-supplemented, participated in the study. The overall results indicated that students in the two environments shared their positive understandings and perceptions about online collaborative learning, which were significantly deepened over time. However, the students in the web-based class were found more positive about the advantages of online collaborative learning than those in the web-supplemented class as their learning experience developed. The study also identified the attributes that were considered crucial to successful online collaboration.

An international online collaborative learning experience was designed and implemented in preservice teacher education classes at the University of Calgary, Canada and the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. The project was designed to give preservice teachers an opportunity to live the experience of being online collaborators investigating real world teaching issues of diversity and inclusivity. Qualitative research was conducted to examine the complexity of the online collaborative experiences of participants. Redmond and Lock’s (2006) flexible online collaborative learning framework was used to explain the design and the implementation of the project. Henri’s (1992) content analysis model for computer-mediated communication was used for the online asynchronous postings and a constant comparative method of data analysis was used in the construction of themes. From the findings, the authors propose recommendations for designing and facilitating collaborative learning on the digital global frontier.

Case studiesandrole-playsare examples of active collaborative teachingtechniques. Online collaborative learning encourages students to learn together in teams using Internet communication technologies. However, online collaborative learning space is not only encouraging but also challenging for both instructors and students. In this article, the authors investigated the application of an online case study method that involves role-play approach (RP/CS) in solving the cases. Due to the shift to online education during the last two years in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this research study explored the application of online RP/CS in the development of students’ leadership skills, which are of significance for all professions. The purpose of this research study is to investigate if/how the instructors use RP/CS tools in order to aid students in their leadership skills development and how students perceive the application of RP/CS activities introduced in online courses. Course instructors across the West Ukrainian National University were surveyed to identify the courses where the instructors used online RP/CS activities. The focus was on the application of RP/CS in teaching leadership skills. Nine course instructors were interviewed to identify the features around the courses and the use of RP/CS (the aim of the course, the purpose of using RP/CS, and the expected outcomes). 22 second-year students who participated in online RP/CS activities were surveyed online. Seven students were interviewed online. The research purpose was to explore students’ perceived learning, participation, and satisfaction. According to the analysis of students’ surveys and interviews, the participants were satisfied with their online learning experience and felt increased motivation and interest in RP/CS. Thus, the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and other current challenges should not negatively affect the educational process in universities. The creation of a new educational space for interactive learning and the use of active collaborative methods online are of particular significance.Key words: online education, case study method, role play, leadership skills, collaborative learning.
