In order to better constrain calcium cycling in natural soil and in soil used for agriculture, we present the δ44/40Ca values measured in rainwater, groundwater, plants, soil, and bedrock samples from a representative karst forest in SW China. The δ44/40Ca values are found to differ by ≈3.0‰ in the karst forest ecosystem. The Ca isotope compositions and Ca contents of groundwater, rainwater, and bedrock suggest that the Ca of groundwater primarily originates from rainwater and bedrock. The δ44/40Ca values of plants are lower than that of soils, indicating the preferential uptake of light Ca isotopes by plants. The distribution of δ44/40Ca values in the soil profiles (increasing with soil depth) suggests that the recycling of crop-litter abundant with lighter Ca isotope has potential effects on soil Ca isotope composition. The soil Mg/Ca content ratio probably reflects the preferential plant uptake of Ca over Mg and the difference in soil maturity. Light Ca isotopes are more abundant in mature soils than nutrient-depleted soils. The relative abundance in the light Ca isotope (40Ca) is in the following order: farmland > burnt grassland > forests > grassland > shrubland. Our results further indicate that biological fractionation in a soil–plant system is a vital factor for Ca–geochemical transformations in soil surface systems.

Abstract Background Antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacterial isolates has increased worldwide leading to treatment failures. Main body Many concerns are being raised about the usage of biocidal products (including disinfectants, antiseptics, and preservatives) as a vital factor that contributes to the risk of development of antimicrobial resistance which has many environmental and economic impacts. Conclusion Consequently, it is important to recognize the different types of currently used biocides, their mechanisms of action, and their potential impact to develop cross-resistance and co-resistance to various antibiotics. The use of biocides in medical or industrial purposes should be monitored and regulated. In addition, new agents with biocidal activity should be investigated from new sources like phytochemicals in order to decrease the emergence of resistance among bacterial isolates.

1. A study has been made of the mitosis rate and of the diurnal cycles of male mice during each of the first 20 months of life. The mice used belonged to the Kreyberg's white label and the Strong's CBA strains. Most of the observations were made on the ear epidermis, but some attention was also given to other tissues. 2. It was discovered that, when judged from the point of view of mitotic activity, the life of a male mouse consists of four ages. During the immature age the animals are still growing and their mitosis rate is generally high, although the ear epidermis provides an exception to this rule. During the mature age which lasts from about the 3rd to the 12th month the mitosis rate is lowered. During the middle age which follows the mitosis rate increases, but in senility it is again reduced. 3. Coincident with these changes in the mitosis rate are changes in the spontaneous bodily activity. The mice are most active during immaturity and maturity. In middle age their activity is reduced by about half, and in senility they spend almost the whole time resting. Particularly in the Strong's CBA mice there are also changes in the timing of the diurnal cycle of spontaneous bodily activity, and these are immediately mirrored by changes in the timing of the diurnal cycle of mitotic activity so that throughout life a general inverse relationship between bodily activity and mitotic activity is maintained. 4. In middle-aged Strong's CBA males the daily rest period extends almost without interruption from 06.00 to 18.00 hr. However, the most active cell division develops only at the beginning of this period, and it is evident that in prolonged sleep a lack of some vital factor develops. It is shown that subcutaneous injections of starch overcome this lack in sleeping mice and result almost immediately in the redevelopment of a high mitosis rate. Thus it would appear that sugar is the vital factor involved, and that the sugar content of the tissues is quickly used up during high mitotic activity. 5. These results are discussed particularly in relation to the problem of carcinogenesis.

However, in the last decade, certain demographic trends and changes in the needs and the nature of the workforce upgraded the WLB/FPW concept to a more significant factor of business growth and competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the need for WLB/FPW in the equation of recruitment and retention of “generation Y” employees as a vital factor of the staffing policies and strategies in the forthcoming years.

The contrast between consonance and dissonance is a vital factor in making music emotionally meaningful. Consonance typically denotes perceived agreeableness and stability, while dissonance in turn disagreeableness and a need of resolution. The current research addresses the perception of consonance/dissonance in intervals and chords isolated from musical context. Experiment 1 explored the correlations between the seven most used concepts denoting consonance/dissonance across all the available (60) empirical studies published since 1883. The stimuli consisted of a representative continuum of consonance/dissonance. The results show that the concepts exhibit high correlations, albeit these are somewhat lower for non-musicians compared to musicians. In Experiment 2 the stimuli's cultural familiarity was divided into three levels, and the correlations between the pivotal concepts of Consonance, Tension, Harmoniousness, Pleasantness, and Preference were further examined. Familiarity affected the correlations drastically across both musicians and non-musicians, but in different ways. Tension maintained relatively high correlations with Consonance across musical expertise and familiarity levels. On the basis of the results a rigorous control for familiarity and musical expertise is recommended for all studies investigating the perception of consonance/dissonance. The findings help pinpoint how familiarity affects the perception of consonance/dissonance and demonstrates the pronounced effect of musical expertise on this.
