This study investigated the possibility that a teacher's preconceived notion of the worth of an instructional material would affect the academic achievement of the children with whom the material was used. Participating teachers were provided with materials accompanied by fictitious evaluative summaries deliberately prepared to bias their opinion in either a positive or negative direction. Analyses of students' pretest and posttest mean scores suggest that the impression a teacher holds of an instructional material may significantly influence subsequent academic achievement. Results also indicate that a teacher's impression of the material may be significantly influenced by the evaluative activities of Special Education Instructional Materials Centers.

An account of the life and work of Dr. Bedford Pierce may suitably begin with some remarks which appear in his book, Addresses to Mental Nurses. In the course of a preface to his Lecture on “Character and Outlook” he says:“Perhaps a few autobiographical details may fittingly be given here for the encouragement of any who may think they are handicapped by lack of money or influence.“In his early days the writer was brought up in a home not far removed from poverty. He was an only child; his father died when he was an infant, leaving him to the care of his mother, a courageous woman possessing deep religious convictions. When ten years of age he went to a boarding school at Croydon belonging to the Society of Friends, and so had the advantage of a plain Quaker education.“But financial reasons compelled him to leave school when 14, and he was then apprenticed to a chemist in a distant northern city. Aware of his limitations, for several years he attended evening classes in languages and natural science. Eight years later he gave up business, and, after three months' private study, succeeded in passing the London Matriculation, which he regards as his greatest academic achievement ! Entering St. Bartholomew's Hospital as a medical student, he was fortunate in examinations, and to a large extent maintained himself by the aid of scholarships.”

The method of learning becomes one of the factors that is very influential, especially for students' academic achievement. Nowadays students are required to be more active in expanding the knowledge they not only get from teaching and learning activities in school, but they can also add knowledge such as from a learning application that they can learn by themselves to hone their understanding of subjects. In the subject of Natural Science (IPA), often the methods or methods used by teachers in teaching are still many that are difficult to understand by the students, the existing learning media less interest of students to study harder, and students sometimes consider easy subjects IPA. Learning Media in High School (SMA) visually displayed in the form of applications that can be accessed with Android-based phones is expected to improve the quality of learning, especially in science subjects.

School librarians have an unprecedented opportunity to assume an instructional leadership role and create a facility that promotes instructional collaboration, inquiry and collaborative learning that will have a dynamic impact on academic achievement. Through the facilitation of these activities, school librarians provide a vital connection to student acquisition of 21st century literacy skills.

Control variables have an important role in educational work where the computer is used as an instructional material. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the importance of control variables in research dealing with computer use in education and to present the effects of these variables, if any, on the results. In line with this purpose, the study examines (considering the duration of the study) the effects of the level of computer literacy, motivation, and the level of self-efficacy on academic achievement. The participants were 117 seventh-graders. Results revealed that when the computer is used as an instructional material, the level of computer literacy and motivation towards the material first had a significant effect on academic achievement but this effect decreased shortly thereafter. Moreover, differences were detected in findings when these variables were considered as control variables. The results also revealed that self-efficacy had a significant effect on academic achievement but there were no data indicating that this variable should be specified as a control variable.

This chapter discusses the interactions among executive function (EF), memory, and literacy skills. Research with hearing populations has suggested a relationship between EF and academic achievement, and there has been particular interest in its relationship with reading. While the majority of research on memory and reading has focused on working memory (WM), there appears to be a broader relationship between memory and reading than just that involving WM. This chapter presents and reviews the general literature and the research with deaf learners on the relationships among EF, memory, and reading and writing. It also presents research with deaf college students that demonstrates the relationships between reading and writing tasks and measures of memory and EF. A general discussion of the integration of EF and memory and their effects on reading and writing skills of individuals who are deaf is presented.
